Trail rig- Jeep XJ or Bronco?

Hey guys I've been debating forever on which of my trucks to make into a trail rig. Not sure if I want to keep it street legal or not just need to decide which one to build first.

So here's the rigs up for building:

1990 Ford Bronco 302 E4OD w/ 75,000 on rebuilt motor, 2 1/2" lift 33x12.50r15 MTRs, custom front bumper and sliders

Plans for this one: 44 SAS out of any 70s model 100 or Bronco. Total 7" lift, 36x13.50 Iroks and 4.56s, lunchbox up front spool rear(depending on funds). More protection/armor. Possibly 6 point cage?

And the other one:

1989 Jeep Cherokee 175,000 miles 4.oL I6, 5 speed, 5" lift 31s and new steelies.

Plans for this one: Newer dana 30 up front out of a 97+ 4 cyl. with 4.10s. Rear w/ Dana 35 or 8.25 with 4.10s and locker. Newer transfer case. Probably leave the lift maybe upgrade the coils but I will put new Rusty's LCAs and UCAs. RE track bar. Total 5" lift with 3" coils and 2" spacers up front and 3" AAL and 1 3/4" block out back. Custom front, rear bumpers and sliders. Possibly a EXO cage tied in with bumpers and sliders. Trimmed fenders and 35x12.50 BFG MTs or Pro Comp XMTs.

All of this depending on funds after graduation.

At least tell me which one yall think would make a cheaper and better trail rig in the long run.

Not the best site to ask...considering this is FSB. But my vote goes for the Bronco. Less miles, more power, more space, and better looking.

If the Bronco has 33's on it and you want a cheap wheeler put a D50 stub shaft and slip yoke in it. Put a locker in the front and back. Get used to wheeling it and then decide if you really want to go bigger. If you want a 44 SAS you'll already have the parts for when you want to upgrade.

If I decide to build the Bronco it'll be w/ a solid 44. Want to do it right the first time and know mostly how to do it and have the tools to pull it off.

I know we're all bias when it comes to choosing Heeps over Broncos but I figured a lot of guys have had experiences with both and want to know both sides of the debate.

Another option is a Dana 44 and 9" in the XJ?....hmm...

What Im wheelin now:

i'd prolly go with the XJ because i've always wanted an XJ to strip out and turn into a dedicated trail rig, plus they have a massive aftermarket and solid axles to start with, and it's a bit smaller than the bronco

If you're actually planning on wheeling it and you want it to be a 100% trail rig that you're planning on using, abusing and having fun with you'll find out really quickly that the money you spent on a D44 wasnt money wisely spent unless you're going to make upgrades like aftermarket shafts or selectable lockers. To be honest with you knowing what I know now if I had the chance I'd have TTB 33's lockers and my ZF and I'd probably have just as capable of a rig and a lot less money in it. A D44 makes a nice rig to drive and have fun with on the weekends I wont deny that. I love the way it rides and it's capable but not indestructible.

An XJ with half tons is a cool idea but uni-bodies suck. You have to beef everything up just so it doesnt flex apart and that to me sucks

Thats what I'm finding out...


Another couple of points to mention is my Bronco's 4x4 is acting up will not go into 4 hi(need manual hubs) and will not come out of 4 wheel drive easily. Again manual hubs.

My XJ has a bad transfer case and I'm hunting a newer one.

Just thought I'd add that.

You're talking about building a trail rig and you still have auto hubs... I think you're getting a little ahead of yourself. I really think spending some time wheeling with TTB would be advantageous

Been there done that Todd.

I wheel all the time. I know I still have auto hubs they worked fine until the last week or 2. I'm changing them whether I trail it or the XJ.

Would it help if I posted some pics? Both my vehicles are in good shape. The XJ has new paint, wheels, and tinted windows.

Bronco just looks bad a because of the big bumper, 33s and, sliders IMO. And the unforgettable Honda driver staring at red lights...

Pics would be great. Open diffs and stock tires can only go so far. Lock front and rear opens up a lot more opportunities, sliders and better ground clearance (bumpers, skidplates) make it a lot easier too. You dont have to have 10" lift to go places

Im partial to broncos, so i voted bronco. An Xj would be cool, but i just love all the space, power, look, and somewhat differentness of having a bronco on teh trail.

Uni-bodies and Dana 30/35 axles of any year are crap.

Full size trail rigs that are on 1/2 ton axles break...a lot. No amount of money you throw into a Dana 44 can match the strength of a stock Dana 60 front axle.

35" tires snap 4340 Dana 44 axles like twigs when loaded down with the weight of a FSB.

My vote really isnt fair because I have a Bronco and my cousin has a built XJ that I can trail anytime I want so I guess I have the best of both worlds!

you can look at it 2 ways

Pros to XJ: narrower(fits in smaller places) lighter(some times more benificial) very very easy to find parts. the 4.0 lasts FOREVER
Cons: unibody, cheap axles, lack of power, and its just a jeep.....u will fit in along with everyother jeeper

Bronco Pros: Power, POWER, and more POWER. if you SAS(right there...awesome) different from all them jeepers
Cons:Width of truck.

thats just a few things that come to mind
my brother had a XJ, wheeled real well. but im still biased to Broncos

Thanks guys like GrenMonster said the Jeep can fit into places I could never get my truck to go in and I'm thinking because me Jeep has more miles and stuff that I should build it so that I can DD my bronco as is.

I don't plan on buying any other vehicle otherwise I would build them both LOL.

I know this is FSB.com LOL just wanted to see some good opinions thanks guys.

The D30/35 of the heep should be enough to tell you it's not the right choice, especially if you want to run 35's.
