PRO is D60 up front 10.25FF out back. If the trans has been rebuilt that's another PRO. The 7.3 is Direct Injection Turbo for that year but a CON is no Intercooler. I'm sure some company makes one or it could be fab'd up pretty easy. Those year 7.3's aren't as powerful as the later years in stock form but is still a solid motor. As posted before the maintenance/repair cost will be much more than a gas engine, but if towing or hauling is what you're doing a diesel is probably your best choice. PRO you'll never have to change spark plugs

Please dont dump black smoke, not only is that ****ing stupid but its wasting fuel, and it gives the greenies something to bitch about.

97 has an intercooler. 96 & older do not.

Yeah its a different world working on one, but you get used to it after a while. And it will run forever if you take care of it.

97 wasn't intercooled from the factory. They didn't get intercoolers until 99 with the intro of Super Duty nameplate. That's not all bad though. They still make decent tow power and unless you're gonna boost it up and dump fuel into it your EGT's should stay fine and it will all work as the factory intended. However if I owned one, I would for sure put an intercooler up front throw a little more boost and fuel at it out a straight 4" pipe and ENJOY

The good is if they are properly maintained they will go 500k easy. I sold my 1995 5 spd with 200k on it and it still drove like new. Make sure you buy one that has been taken care of though as even the little things can get pricey. I wish I had not sold mine now as it was the best truck I have ever owned and towed like a dream. Now not the fastest thing in the world but they will pull great and get good MPG while doing it. Its hard to believe a one ton, cc, 4x4 long bed getting 16-21 MPG but they do.

That's poor mileage for these rigs. Mine will see 25mpg.
