Being as I am graduating next month and will hopefully be receiving a steady, healthy paycheck I wanna spend some coin on firearms for several reasons, one of which is to buy certian things while I still can. So I am looking for a primer, particularily on AR-15s given the long list of options. I have my GA CCW already to simplify the purchase process so its just a matter of $$$.
-Carry Pistol-(xD series?-gotta get to a local range and try a few out)
-Home Defense Shotgun (Leaning Mossberg 500 based on things I have ready here (lefty)
-AR-15-General Fun-Zombies, Aliens, Targets, etc
Down the Road-
-.22 For target fun
Recommendations of good sites, magazines or books to start poking through?
The XD is very popular and has high-cap mags readily available.
I love my Moss 500 12 ga. I got the tactical 500A with the pistol grip and removable/collapsible stock and 18.5'' barrel. As a lefty it is great, the safety is ambidextrous and the pump release trigger is also. It is 5+1 and you can get rid of those 6 shells really fast with practice. It is also pretty accurate for such a short shotgun. I can smack a clay outta the air at about 25-35 yards. My buddies 12 ga O/U with the long bird barrel has trouble keeping up.
An AR is a great weapon. Little recoil, very accurate, and the range is pretty good. There have been complaints coming out of the desert that the .223 or 5.56N lacks takedown power at ranges typically found in battles. Some guys complained about having to hit the guys 2-3 times in the center mass for a complete takedown... I'd almost recommend an AK. You can buy the nicest of the nice for the price of a cheap AR, and they are easier to keep running, ammo is much cheaper and readily available, and parts are cheap and in constant supply. Throw one into the sand, pick it up, and see which fires like its brand new.
www.gunandgame.com is a great forum, with some incredibly knowledgeable people who answer your questions enthusiastically. I'd recommend stopping by and saying hi, I'm KGunner over there. Shotgun News is a pretty fun gun rag.
Also, for fun plinker guns look at Kel-Tec. I own the P-11 handgun and its a nice little firearm...hasn't failed me yet while feeding the crappiest ammo ever. I've been contemplating one of their carbines for a while.
XD's aren't bad pistols (i have a 4" XD 45") and make a good carry gun if you can conceal it well, otherwise a 45 KAHR or something might be a little easier to conceal.
AR's can be built relatively inexpensive, but they won't be as well of built parts as the nicer ones. The AK's are getting kind of expensive. You can always sporterize an SKS or leave an SKS stock for that matter. They are also about 1/2 the price. Little more accurate, but slightly less durable and more troublesome as it does have more parts and tighter tolerances.
Either way you really can't go wrong..might as well get one of each
I have a norinco sks with some trigger work done and a receiver scope, but on my ak I have the front sight removed and a pistol scope added
I wouldn't recommend the 30 round mags for the sks, I like the 15 round models
Government is not reason; it is not eloquent; it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.
Does the AK have the optics and barrel upgrades to match the AR's?
There are no barrel upgrades for an AK. AK's are not meant to shoot long distance. They make an AK with a long heavier barrel, I think its called an RPK, but the RPK also costs more. If you want a small round that is very accurate out of a gun that has to be maintained constantly buy the AR. If you want a bigger round that is combat accurate but would shoot 1000 rounds plus before it really needs to be cleaned buy the AK. Just my 2 cents.
There are many optics mounting options for the AK. Go to Cheaperthandirt.com. Not always the best parts but read the reviews.
Also I love Springfield XD's but Glock's are number 1.
By the time Friday rolls around I'll have an XD45, P3AT, PLR 16, PLR 22, Mosin Nagant, Sporterized SKS, 20" barreled varmint AR,, 2 870s, and 2 M11 shotguns in centerfire pistols/rifles/shotguns...you can never have too many. Getting ones in similar calibers is nice, though. You can get an AR in 22, 223, 6.5/6.8, 308, 7.62x39, etc, etc...makes for a versatile platform.
OOoooOOo just remembered you can get AWESOME conversions for AR platform to shoot .50 cal. Saw it in some gun magazine a few months back, some are great with 10 round detachable magazines, some not so much that have to be breech loaded. All were affordable for a .50 around 2-5,000 bucks IIRC.
