1998+ F250 Rear Axle

I bought that 1990 F250 w/ 7.3 IDI and ZF5, and I noticed it doesn't have the original rear end. It has the newer post-OBS F250 10.25 which is non-free floating by the looks of it (has no huge outer hubs sticking out of the rim). How good are these rear ends? By it being non-free floating I it imagine sucks.

The proper term is semi-floating. The main difference that I know of is that the weight of the vehicle is resting on the axleshaft and that if the shaft breaks, the wheel can come off the truck. I'm not sure of anything else I have in mind.

That's pretty shitty. Free-floating 10.25 swap maybe in the future, if I can find one for the right price.

What gear ratio do you need? There have been several on CL north of Milwaukee. Does that have the long or short pinion? Otherwise there is a nice junkyard up here in Oshkosh that would definitely have one

4.10's would be best. Dont know which pinion it has, how can I tell? Are there any 87-91 F-series up there that would have a good steering shaft in it as well? The bushing on the one in this truck is wore out. I thought it would be a cheap fix but turns out you can only get the whole shaft from Ford for $315...

So your truck has metric wheels in the back and standard wheels in the front?

It's either a SF 10.25 or a SF LD 97 or 98 f250 axle. You know the f250s, that have the same body as the 97-03 f150s.

and yes a FF 10.25 or 10.5 is better.

A diesel f250 has the HD pkg, which is a full float rear axle from the factory. So the SF isn't stock.

Weren't those LD F250s 7 lug axles?

I know that like 01-03s could have an option called the "7700 GVWR package", and they had the 7 lugs.

It looks like it has the original wheels in the back. It has a plug where the VSS would go on here and it's connected to the rear end and everything. I thought 1990 was too old to have VSS. It definitely is a 10.25 case though. I'll get some pictures when I get a chance. So Ford did make a SF 10.25 for this year?

EDIT: Seems they did use a SF 10.25, as a "lighter duty" version on these years. Did not know that. Neither did my Ford nut friend. Id still like a FF 10.25 sometime in the future though. I miss those big outer hubs. And knowing that if you break an axle shaft while hauling a load in the bed that the wheel isn't going to fly off is kind of reassuring.

Yeah, the lightest GWVR obs F-250s had the semifloat. The 99+ superduty's 10.5 Sterlings are all full float as far as I know, just the hub doesn't stick out as far as the 10.25. I think the light duty '97-'98 F-250's and '99+ F-150 7700's seven lug thinger is a Sterling 9.75 whatnot.
