Repair Manual for Massey Ferguson 65 Tractor (New pics/Questions)

This is a LOOOONG shot, but maybe some of you have farm tractors and can help me out.

My Dad left me a plot of land we call "The Farm" and a MF65 tractor to do "Farm Wok"

Well the tractor has never had an operational alternator, or gauges. It has started sputtering when it gets off camber, and I don't think it has ever had a fluid or filter change of any kind since my Dad bought......And last week I tried to swap the bush-hog for the boom pole and the hydrolic system would barley lift the bush-hog.

I need to do some work on this thing and I know nothing about it's anatomy, so I need to learn, and to do that I need a good repair manual.

I have found a few online, but have no idea if any are better than others.

A friend of mine has actually gotten into restoring a couple of those Massey tractors. His are like 1950 models I think. I can ask him.

If you are not restoring it look at a GM 1 wire self exciting alternator.I have put them on a few old tractors.
There 45ish from Advance.

Hydraulics ,Look around the lift lever.Most times there a valve or another lever that puts it in a float mode.It want lift well in float.

Where are the pics? That is the only reason I opened this thread.

Ditto on the convert the alternator. Those old systems didn't work for long when they were new.

The rest is common sense, but yeah for a manual, eBay, or post up on a site like

You need to determine if it has live hydraulics, or if it is just low on fluid, or the lift cylinder is bad.

I would bet there are even yahoo groups or sites dedicated to those old masseys

x3 on the alternator. as for the guages just replace the essentials with manual as i beileve the masseys used electric. theres a company called jensales that offers almost all american farm tractor repair manuals, not sure of a website a quick google search should reveal it. as for the hydraulics ive seen plenty of things ranging from wrong fluid to super plugged filters. if its one of those two then i hope you catch it in time before the pump crapped out.

Was the lift jerky when it was raising up, or just slow? We have a late 60s model 165 Massey that the lift jerks on badly if you don't grease where the lift arms mount to the cylinder(top of arms under tractor seat)

Look under the gas tank where the fuel shutoff is, there should be a glass bell there to catch sediment from the tank, it more than likely is full of all kinds of nasty stuff that needs to be cleaned out. The gravity flow carb is probably gummed up from fuel setting in it, causing some of the sputtering. Clean it up and check the tank for rust.

So, generators never worked? Explain that, cause we never have a problem with them, and they seemed to work fine until the electrical needs exceeded what they could do.

The starter looks original. And does it have a generator or alternator?

Generator, next project after the lift and all fluids changed.

Well, I bought the manual listed above and it really, really sucks. It is hard to read and does not list the basics. For example, it tells you the capacity off the tranny/axle/hydraulic system, but not where to drain it, or fill it. Fortunately I can look at it and guess where, but it would be nice to be reassured.

Or under the generator fore diagnosis it does not list a single test procedure, just specs and tolerances.

But I did learn that it has power steering
I should really put some fluid in that... By the way what is Type-A transmission fluid?

I do think I know whats wrong with the lift, it uses the transmissions gear oil as hydraulic fluid. One of the shifter boots is cracked and may have let rain water in the transmission, it was cold, water freezes, hard to pump ice.

Hopefully an 8-GALLON fluid swap will solve the problem and there is no actual damage. Shifter boots will be replaced, and the tractor will be parked in one of the horse stalls instead of out in the elements.

I also have an old Cat 977 Tracked Front end loader out there that has not moved in 10 yrs and is sitting outside. I have no idea what to do with, or about it.

My dad swore if I changed the batteries, cleaned the sediment bowl, and changed the fuel that it would start and run. I find that to be dubious at best.

We have a few old tractors like that at work. They are pretty simple. Im sure if you poke around on it enough you can figure out everything you need to know.

What year is it? We have some OLD massey manuals at work....

The problem is time, it's 20 miles from my home, and 45miles away from my work. The only way to poke around with it is to load it on the trailer and tow it to my house. And I have to store it wile it's there. But that's what I am going to have to do.

Tractor supply probably, otherwise I think most parts stores have 5 gallon pails in the back.
