Remote domain call causing long page loads

Heya @fullsize ,

On the new posts page, you'll find calls to vbtoucan.com, which Vertical Scope owns but is a non-responsive domain. This is causing the browser to try to load these elements for up to 2 minutes before giving up and finishing the page load. Unfortunately, some of your page's js is dependent on the page load finishing so it's breaking some features.

The code you're going to find shows up for each search result and is in the following format:

Code:
<div class="excerptlong" style="display:none;"><strong>Last Post By: , ago</strong><br/><img src="http://www.vbtoucan.com/forum/image.php?u=&dateline=1375373389&type=thumb"></div>
If you change it to the local domain, you get this image:

Which I don't think you're aiming for on the template, so it can probably just be eliminated since it's not working anyway :)

I don't see anything else on the page that's failing to load. If you'll remove those elements from the template, it should resolve the issue with the page load. I'll try to pay attention whether I notice any other pages that are affected by it.

Thanks and hope your day's going great!

Hey,

Did you notice the site trying to call up vbtoucan anywhere else or is it only the New Posts page?

Hi there Sheena,

I found it only on any resulting page that utilizes search.php, so latest posts, search results, advanced search, etc. I haven't found it anywhere else at this point but will update if I do.

My stuff is taking forever to load wherever I go, I blame it on the election hubbub going on the internet now. Seems like during peak times like weekends and afternoons things get clogged up. That and Schwin is talking Chinese so I did not get anything he said?

I'm a bit of a tech nerd and I can safely say that he's making it all up in an effort to look cool.

Thanks for you efforts, Shwim. It's been bugging me lately!

When I meet with the tech team next I'll ask them if they would have an idea why this seems to pull from our vbtoucan page. Maybe something was left pointing there when the conversion happened.

I'm pretty sure it's just a leftover artifact from either borrowing template code or development on the vbtoucan site. the fact that it's style properties contains "display:hidden;" lets you know that it's been suppressed. Had it been part of the normal template code, that bit would have been properly located in the CSS file, methinks. Also, we know it's not intended to be seen because the person that left it there never bothered fixing the PHP code generating it to pull the latest poster's username, posttime and avatar.

Removing the hidden attribute and altering the image source to show gives you something like this(click for biggie):

Which looks like maybe some unused hover-over feature for latest poster. The image code I posted in the OP is designed to get the user's avatar but since the code isn't being populated with the user's information, it's showing the default noimage vbulletin image.

Simply removing the image code from the template would resolve the page load issue and not change the operation of the template in any way.

Took a gander at some of the Autoguide forums this morning while having coffee and found a few things you can share with the crew:

Of all the VB powered forums that use your shared template like the one on this site(dynamic right bar), they all utilize the excerptshort/excerptlong code, all are intentionally hidden from view and none of them are populating the user information properly.

Some still have the vbtoucan domain while some have been changed to pull the image src locally:

NSXForums.com - vbtoucan.com
DriveAccord.net - vbtoucan.com
TSXClub.com - local domain
AcuraWorld.com - local domain

If you look at the style code for excerptshort and excerptlong it's clear that it was intended to be a hover-over to show latest poster, when and their avatar. Excerptshort was empty, however, so there was no way to trigger it. If you modify the code to have something to hover over, however, you do get the pop-up div (click for biggie):

Even though some of your forums, like TSXClub and AcuraWorld have the template code pulling from the local domain, the code is still lacking the ability to populate the information and the link for excerptshort is still hidden from use, so I'm pretty sure that this feature is intended to be hidden from use. God knows I wouldn't want that popping up every time I go to click the last post icon

For TL;DR: Switching to localdomain is what some of your forums utilize to keep the stalled page load from occurring but even those don't actually utilize the hover over pop up div. It seems to just be some suppressed code that nobody ever bothered removing from the template, instead just making sure it wouldn't be seen.

Hey,

I'm scheduled to meet with the tech and creative team tomorrow and I will be discussing this issue with them to see if they have any information that that can provide, or possibly even a way to remove that.

Hi there Sheena,

It would be trivial to remove it from the template. Comparing the code on this site to other Autoguide sites using the same template, however, my guess would be that they will simply change the domain to reflect fullsizebronco.com so it's not trying to pull from vbtoucan.com.

Hi,

I spoke with the creative team that were responsible for the upgrade and they looked through the templates and found that it wasn't written in there. It seems like it could be on the server side where it is trying to call up vbtoucan for no good reason. I'm going to get the tech team to look on the server side to see if they can figure out why that call is happening.

~Sheena

Edit:
This should now no longer show. They were able to track down where it was pulling from and rectify that. Good eye!

It's still showing. Line 1260 of a search shows the first post and it's the following:

Code:
<div class="excerptlong" style="display:none;"><strong>Last Post By: , ago</strong><br/><img src="http://www.vbtoucan.com/forum/image.php?u=&dateline=1375373389&type=thumb"></div>
I don't know where they ended up finding the code but if they did find the call in a template, they may need to rebuild the template cache to get the change to stick.
