Tech Question Regarding how I Type. (yeah... the question is this dumb)

Okay... I'm friggin' pissed. I just typed several paragraphs of stuff and I keep hitting some keystroke that deletes everything in the white dialogue box (the thing we type responses and stuff in) in a single wipe. I have no idea what I'm pressing that keeps doing it. Takes the entire box back to blank. Quotes, typed stuff, everything. Gone. The page is not reloading, I'm not hitting the "back" key; it's something I'm pressing while typing.

This happens, frequently, to me and I don't know how I keep doing it. I spend 15-20 minutes typing something and it all disappears. I almost threw my laptop this last time (not kidding).

What the hell keystroke(s) am I pressing that keeps f***ing me??!!!

Thanks,
Eric

Hi there Eric,

I don't know of a single key combo that would clear a text box but the next time it happens, try hitting Control and "Z" at the same time(while the cursor is active in the textbox that the text disappeared in). This is the undo command for text control and should replace the text that disappeared, providing it wasn't from a page reload.

Want to know more key combos for text control? Check this out!

Thanks schwim! I don't think my laptop will survive another "issue." It seems to happen, at times, when I go for the "Shift" key. The page doesn't re-load, but, everything in the text box, just, disappears. Like, when you highlight a bunch of stuff and hit the "backspace" key. Only, there is no highlighting... just a single wipe/delete. And there sits the cursor; blinking in the upper left corner of the text box, as if I hadn't even typed anything. It just sits there, mocking me.

"CTRL Z". Gotcha. Also, that was a helpful page. Thank you.

Also, upon closer inspection, my touchpad is located right below my spacebar. Sometimes, if I don't position my hands just right, my thumb knuckles will graze the touchpad and move my cursor. I wonder if this has anything to do with my issue.

Anyways, thanks sir.

Eric

sounds like you're suffering from F.F.S. (fat finger syndrome). I prefer to use a standard size keyboard when/if at all possible.
if you're hitting Ctrl instead of Shift, you open all kinds of potential disasters when the fat fingers are flying.

Ctrl + A (highlights all txt) + anything = bye bye all txt.
(as noted on the page schwim shared above)

try slowing down and paying attention to your keystrokes.
it's annoying but you might finger out where you're stumbling over more keys than you intend.

I have this problem all the time trying to text with the phone.

Hi there Eric,

Ahh, the terribad mousepad syndrome! :) In all seriousness, it most definitely could. If the touchpad registers a double-tap, it will sometimes highlight everything in the box. If it's a sensitive touchpad, it could cause your text to highlight and then disappear with any keyclick coming next.

For most operating systems, there's the capability to disable the touchpad only while you're typing. Check out this link to find out how to do that.

Thanks, Pepe`. I am just using the laptop keyboard and the keys are flat, not raised. I'm actually medium-ish build (5'10", 176). However, I am a lazy typist. I constantly hit the backspace key for spelling errors.

Good suggestion. I will try to be more diligent with my fingering.

That's a good point, schwim. I have a little "disable touchpad" key on the board. It's F6. I will, also, try that.

Thank you gentlemen. As always, I leave a better person after visiting FSB. Waaayyyy better than church, too.

I used an HP laptop for a number of years and hated it, even when I "felt" used to it. Damn thing never left the man-cave anyway, so it really was pointless. I recently got a whole new (2me) setup for free from an IT bro of mine when his company upgraded everything. old school desktop w/dual 22" monitors. broke out the old wireless keyboard and mouse and feel so much more comfortable. haven't had it this good since I was working support for MS. now when I use the laptop (relegated to the shop for FSB access) I feel like I'm going to break the keyboard.

technology bud... it's a bitch for us old guys. Luckily we have great people like schwim who stay up on top of that stuff.
I tried to dump as much of that crap out of my brain as I could once I got out.

schwim, I'm gonna hug you if I ever meet you. I just did the delete thing, again, and "CTRL Z" brought everything back. Saved. My. Ass.

Pepe`... I'm gonna hug you just because I like you. You seem like a "hugger"... maybe...
