Question Engine ID Code: Is it a 302 or 351W?

The eighth character in the VIN number is "H".

Does the H signify a 351W? If so, what's the letter
for a 302? I searched and couldn't find the answer anywhere.

Thanks,
ROE

H should be a 351W motor... "Should be" what is the year of the truck and the intake plentum should also say 5.0 or 5.8 unless the motor has been replaced or upgraded...

H is a 351, N is a 302. if in doubt google "VIN decoder" and plug the vin in, it'll tell you the year, make, model, engine size and i believe weight rating for the vehicle (dont quote me on the last, but i'm 100% positive about the others).

Depends, in a '69 Mustang an "F" for the fifth digit in the VIN did indeed signify a 302.

Thumbs up Thanks

My thanks to all for the replies and links.

I should have said 5.0L instead of 302, since that's the Ford
nomenclature for the later models and my saying 302 was confusing.

I'm in the market for a later model Bronco, 90-96, and needed to
identify the engine size by looking at the VIN.
As was stated, H equals 351W, and N is the 5.0.

Thanks again.

We're talking 8th in the VIN, not the 2nd.

could have changed depending on the year groups. i was looking for 87-96 broncos when i found mine. on ads where the engine size wasn't listed i looked up the vin, found h for 351 and n for 302. never let me down that way. if yours is different could be your truck is weird or ford just could have used a few different letters at different times.

last i checked this is a bronco forum, not a mustang forum. so answers given here should go without saying that they will be bronco specific or ford truck specific....not 69 mustang specific.

im also going to assume the 69 did not have a 17 char vin but instead something like an 8 or 13 number (not sure of the number but under 17) vin correct?
