'86 351W Freeze Plug Replacement

Any ideas, or perhaps a walkthrough, on how to change the freeze plug that is under the exhaust manifold and engine mount on the driver's side, without pulling the engine? It's got quad-shocks up front if that makes a difference.

I tried it myself last spring and never succeeded. It is much less work to go ahead and pull the motor than what you would have to do to change it in place.

Not even something like removing the mount and jacking the engine up?

More then likely that's what you probably need to do...PITA job but Napa has expandable rubber freeze plugs in different sizes, some here say they last indefinately and cost around $7.99 each....?

The metal OEM freeze plugs run around $2-3.00 each so make sure you clean the block hole and Loc-Tite for either works great as a sealer, Steve83 tech tip....another temp option would be to use JB Weld if you can get enough in there to completely cover it to stop the leak.....without having to lift the engine....?

Don't do the rubber plugs...they're worthless for anything more than an emergency. If you can, get the truck up on a lift and remove anything exhaust and motor mount related that you can. That's about you're only access tp the plug. make sure that you get the new one set in straight and even. Also, use some light threadlocker sealant on the outer ring of the plug to help with minor metal imperfections. Good luck

I've got a darn solid Made in USA brass plug from NAPA (they also sold it to me cheaper than the other parts store that sold me a thin brass Made in China plug). I'd rather not use an emergency plug for something permanent. I actually did find this looking around the 'net: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/60...eeze-plug.html

Doesn't look like there are quad-shocks there though...

Got the old plug out yesterday in cold weather. Waiting until it warms up again a bit before I put the new one in and reinstall everything...I managed in the low 30 weather yesterday, but am not crawling around on the ground in 20 weather, lol.

All back together today thanks to the great weather! Ended up having to use an expanding plug, but made sure I tightened it enough and let it sit for a day with loctite just to make sure it doesn't come loose.

I have the rubber replacement freeze plugs in my boat with a 302. no problems there...

We kept blowing out those rubber expansion ones in a buddies 240sx, but it was also turbocharged with a lot of crankcase pressure. I still would never ever use them, never had any issues with the regular old freeze plugs.
