smog/air pump

I just completed a rebuild on my 95 Bronk's 351 I found my smog/air pump was seized solid, I gotta breaker bar trying to free it but its a no go, could I just get a shorter belt and just run it a be fine, I went to the auto parts store and they said it would be $200 for a new one, Im not too keen on that number, maybe I'll try a auto wrecker. and if it wont run fine what would be the symptoms Im really quite interested on what they would be so

thanks

smog pump

IIDK if you being in Canada is the issue. I"m about to buy a new one (bearing whining) and have checked Rockauto.com and advanced auto parts. They both have them listed for around $100.00 U.S.. With exchange rate and int. shipping I would not expect it to double the cost.

The air pump is used to inject fresh air into the exhaust stream before the cat to facilitate a reaction to cut down on emissions. If you disconnect it without removing the cat I think the converter will clog up, resulting in a serious compromise in performance, choking and restricting your exhaust.

What he said..^---^

Either gut/remove the cats to suit or fix the pump. But yeah, it's not crucial for engine operation.

Then by all means, either replace it, or remove it.

I thought there was emissions testing in BC, or do you know a guy kinda thing. If you don't run the air pump you can really clean up the passenger side of the engine bay.

there is emissions testing in BC but only in the vancouver area where I am not so at the moment I dont need to worry bout passing them. I'll look into un-seizing my airpump tho, I'll just unbolt it and start playing around with it hopefully I can free it if not oh well. thanks for all the help.

If my air pump were disconnected in a '96 5.0 xlt, would it cause a trouble code?

I went to O'Reilly's to get a belt but I forgot where I saw the length for a 95 5.0 needed to this so I came to do a search and found this. Now i question if I should do this seeing how it can clog up the cat. Not that emissions counts for me but MPG/performance is and a clogged cat isn't going to work out that way. Maybe gutting the cat? If so, my truck is already loud, this is going to make it scream which is what I DON'T want to do. guess it's time to trade the 3" straight for a muffler and gut the cat.

I'm not racist, I'm just culturally insensitive...

Just had this problem this morning. Took it to my mechanic and we just took off the pulley and ran a shorter belt. Said I shouldn't have any troubles. Except when I go to do emissions, but other than that I should be fine. Found one at my local jy for $20 so I will head over there probably on Friday and grab it real quick. FYI the belt was only like 1" shorter than stock, I have a '92 with a 351. Didn't get a part number though. Sorry.
