Hey guys, haven't had a bronco in a long time. I'm looking at a 95 with a 5.8. It has a bad trans and i was wondering what years would go in without an issue. I replaced the trans on a focus a month ago and the replacement had to be the same exact year and part # as there were a few different auto trans with the same engine... So i don't want to run into any problems changing the trans, I'm going to look today i did a quick search but i just want a clear answer as i hate auto transmissions to begin with. Thanks Guys

BTW I'm looking for my old Bronco maybe the guys on here, its 1990 5.0 manual Silver/Black with orange pin stripe with black interior in NJ i think.

safest bet would be to go with a tranny from the same year. at some point after '93 they made some upgrades. they're covered in a few threads. An E4OD from an older rig would work, but you might run into issues with the connectors.

the connectors were changed starting in 95 for both the mlp senser and the solenoid pack. other than that they are interchangeable; the internals were changed in 95 for the better;in 95 the e4od got an upgraded ball bearing center support, revised o/d planet and input shaft and much better F5 casting pump. there were also some sprag upgrades. i wouldnt bother with a pre 95 e4od; the 99-up 4r100 uses pwm. no e4od uses pwm. and it refers to how the torque converter clutch is applied....has nothing to do with firmer shift points; the gas and deisel cases are different. they wont interchange..."

Solenoid Body Diode; "...When the solenoids turn off the collapsing magnetic field can send a spike back to the ecc. To protect the ecc they put diodes in the solenoid pack to block the spikes. In 95 they moved the diodes to the ecc, so if you have a pre-95 ecc and a 95-96 solenoid pack there are no diodes and you can blow out your ecc. I believe that was also when they changed the wiring to the weather plug, so you need to be sure that you have the right year solenoid pack and that the wire harness is wired for the 92. If either is incorrect you may have blown out your ecc..."

Trucks aren't as specific as cars. Any 4WD E4OD with a smallblock bellhousing will fit & work. The MLPS connector was redesigned, but the latest design is the service replacement for all older styles.


The 4R100 is actually the same transmission, but by the time Ford changed to that naming system, they weren't building smallblocks any more. Point being: I think you could buy a 4R100 with a cracked case & put the guts into a worn-out E4OD. But check with a slushbox specialist before going that route.

all small block: 4.9 L6, 5.0 V8, & 5.8L V8 E4OD models will go right in without an issue.

Big block e4od's will not.

if you're going to replace, the very best thing to do is to find a 1997 transmission from an F series truck with the 5.8L, these will be the newest and most "up to date" models of the transmission.

If you "know somebody", you may get lucky. I've been here.. I ended up buying a 460ci e4od that had been updated and factory/dealer reconditioned/rebuilt and upgraded with steel parts and had all of it's internals moved from the big block housing to my existing small block housing. The labor for that job set me back $340 alone, and I let Joe keep the BBF housing, and all the internal parts from the SBF housing that lost Forward & Reverse.

The 1995 and later truck E4ODs have a different solenoid block than the earlier models. The solenoid protection diodes were moved from the solenoid block to the PCM. The connectors for the solenoid block and the MLPS also changed. If you find an earlier E4OD you can swap on your existing MLPS and solenoid block.

The 89-91 E4OD transmissions also have a different shift "arm" than the 92 up ones due to the different steering columns and method used to engage the gears. It is swappable between the two, but is additional work.

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but I am exploring my options for getting my bronco going quickly (uses a 96 OBDII setup with a 96 E4OD). My buddy has a 91 Bronco that is being parted out just feet from where my own Bronco is parked. He has an E4OD in it that was working when the truck was parked to have its engine harvested. Other than swapping the shift linkage is there anything that I would need to do to make this transmission an emergency spare? I have valve bodies and a solenoid pack from a 96 that can be swapped in.
