What damage have i caused???

So i went to durhamtown with some friends on saturday. I unlocked my hubs (or so i thought) before leaving the trail. Drove 150 miles or so home and thought i had a problem with my right front wheel. We wrote it off as mud problems and thats all. I went out to make sure my hubs were in the free position and both seemed to be. I then started to try to lock the front right and it would not budge. I tried to turn it to free again and the cap popped off. It feels like it is still engaged on the rt side. What kind of damage have i possibly caused myself?

As long as your transfer case is in 2 hi all thats happening is your front end parts are spinning. I wouldn't think that would cause damage because in the winter I leave my hubs locked for months so I don't have to get out in the snow to use 4wd

Well it has to be doing something because its "jumpy" in turns and you can feel it bucking a little when u start rolling off. The cap came off the right hub and a ball bearing and small spring were just laying there.

Its going to the mechanics shop if its more than hubs. I dont know what im looking at. Just wondering what i could be looking at.

So it could be no damage but the hubs themselves? I was making sure i could not have messed up my front gears or transfer case or something big

Hubs are easy to install yourself. Snap a picture of what it looks like and post it. If it's just hubs your done in no time.

they probably don't know either. this design of axle is so obsolete in its setup most newer techs will look at it and go "huh".

there's a big snap ring on the ID of the hub tube. pull that out and the hub should come out then.

I had the same popping and weird steering when I accidentally left one locked and one not. Never hurt anything, just acted funny.
Sounds like your hub went out and needs to be repaired/replaced. I imagine it'll be all good to go after that.

Holy lack of grease!

Toss a set of Warn or (better yet) Mile Marker units in there.

Check your bearings, ball joints and the rest of your front suspension while youre under there. I'm sure there are some write ups hanging around here.

And carefully consider the state of the rest of the easy-to-forget fluids in your vehicle.

Prob a good time to repack your wheel bearings. I took my manual hu s apart years ago and cleaned with a cup of gas and a toothbrush. Then lightly coated them in anti seize.

looks like the lack of grease in there had things all seized up, and breaking. hit up a parts store or the internet store of your choice. Advance sells warn premiums put them in my bronco a few years back. Pretty cheap fix, and only takes an hour or so.

I dont have proper tools for pulling the lock clips out so i always had to fight with them... with a pick and some snap ring pliers could easily be a 20minute job per side.

I agree with replacing with Warn premiums.

Don't just order or buy them anywhere. Some hubs require a kit that is not included with the hubs. Someone that really knows Fords will know what you need. Check with Steve83 or one of the gurus on here. They can help.

Buy a Chiltons or Haynes manual. If I can learn this so can you. Read up in the manual. When you replace the hubs you can go a little further and check the wheel bearings. IF it got really hot or not enough grease then they could have damage, BUT could be fine. You want to check the spindle nut torque anyway so go the step further and check the bearings. I did mine on my 93.

FYI. Something I learned that i didn't know. There are multiple bearings that can go bad in the spindle/hub assembly. In your case you have a hub bearing failure. There are also wheel bearings and spindle bearings. Spindle bearings are the most labor intensive to replace and probably most commonly ignored, but they should only spin when the 4x4 is engaged or the hubs locked.

If you really don't want to learn it then look for someone willing to do some side work. Its soo much cheaper!

If you do replace them do not just glob a bunch of grease in there. A light coat of grease, atf or any other lubricant will suffice. It also appears that you have some other problem going on because your axle shaft seems to be pushed in pretty far and the snap ring is off of it. might look at your axle shaft and make sure that everything is good to go there as well. Keep in mind that you can do this yourself, its pretty easy to tear these front ends apart and as long as youre no doing gears theres not much you can really screw up.

Seriously?!? ATF in wheel bearings? ATF is a detergent it does NOT possess the viscosity necessary to properly lube a high heat bearing over long periods. Use proper bearing grease and pack them until it comes out the opposing gaps. Too much grease is not a bad thing in wet environments, and is cheap insurance.It is always best to check your hubs at least quarterly, or prior to any water crossings. They are fairly simple to maintain, and it looks intimidating but really if you can manage setting up your cable television, you can manage hubs , all you need is instruction , get a manual.

Bearing should be packed but hubs are not suppose to be. They can be lightly coated in a lube to prevent corrosion.

no, damn calm down. take some fawkin xanax. they were referring to putting a little ATF in the HUB LOCK.....grease in the hub lock is known to prevent them from working properly.
