Bronco Info: 95 Bronco XL 5.0 5speed
Is 250 a fair price for a ZF5 with 5th gear out

Just wondering what these things are going for. A guy wants 250 for one, came off a straight six 4.9 4x4. Says it wont go in 5th gear. So I'll be tearing it apart or using it as a core.

my local junk yards charge 150 for manual cores, of unknown working quality, knowing you play to rebuild it.

That said, 250 for a rebuildable core is high, at least for my area (central PA)

keep looking. also it wont be a ZF5, if it was behind a 4.9 it was/is/should be a Mazda tranny= not even worth 250 if it worked perfect.

Couldn't it be a ZF5 if the 4.9 was in an F-350?

this. the 300 WAS offered in the 250/350. it can absolutely be backed by a zf.

1/2 the 1/2 tons w 300s and 5 speeds were ZFs. the other half were Mazdas.



OP, $250 for a core trans is too much. A GOOD WORKING one is worth $250

Allright I'll keep looking around, I dont need it now. I have the m5od now and its getting to be a pain (I think some synchros are gone), but it still works fine. Just trying to find one for a decent price.

no. NONE of the 1/2 tons (f150) got the zf. the zf was only used in heavy duty applications from the factory.

Haven't got time to look it up right now but in the '91 Ford Shop Manual they
make like 1/2 ton's (F150's, U150's and lighter F250's) could-have a ZF in it.

ps- You know, when it comes to Ford making stuff it's best not to use words
like: "never" or "always". LOL :) HolmanMoody and Shelby and others made
stuff and the guy picking it up at the dealership wouldn't know the difference.
pps- At work we had an old Ford/Utility(?) line-truck. F700? Body style was
prior to the Bump Side (I don't know what that body style is called).
ppps- "line truck" ...for linemen. ;) Any other new or old linemen on FSB? :D

Yeah. I have been around quite a few ZF equipped F150s. Every one was a 300 6cyl. and 2 of them were original owners that nothing was ever done other than oil changes and brakes(by the dealer) so i know they were not swapped in

never ever seen one or ever hear of a zf in a half ton. maybe they do exist but they are probably as common as the 302/aod combo in an f250 (rare bird)

That's an 8 pound (small) sledge hammer there.
And the open-end wrench in the 2nd picture is a 15/16"x 1".
Those are pretty big gears, bigger than a T18's.
I can shift my T18 quicker than my ZF.
It's "supposed to be that way" according to guys that actually know something. (not me :)
So... when you swap to a ZF don't be looking for it to shift as fast as your old Mazda could. ??

You mean their "position" so 5th is back and reverse is forward? :)

That's reverse there in the middle...
{with its teeth slanted the "other way"}

5th gear at the bottom.
{these are all driven gears on the main shaft}
{a beefy} 1st gear at the top.
2nd gear laying there on the wood. (wood has a 15/16" hole in it ;)
3rd gear isn't in the picture.
...and there isn't a "4th gear" at all. ;)

pps-
The shaft at the top is the "input shaft", just below it is the "counter shaft",
I think some guys call that the "cluster gear"(?). Anyway the gear teeth that
are cut-right-into-the-shaft is first-gear's drive-gear...

Those two shafts are pointing the same direction and the "main shaft" off
to the right is pointing the opposite direction. So, 5th gear is on the left-end
of the main shaft (mostly hidden by the bearing splitter) and 5th gear's
drive-gear is on the right-end of the counter-shaft.

...I'd sure like to know how they can be "swapped"! LOL :)
