Is this my starter going out?

hey guys, back again. Karmas acting up on me. Specs: 84 xlt - 302 - auto.
Whenever the truck gets warmed up lets say there is a 3 to 4 out of 10 chance that it has a very hard startup - as if it has a DEAD battery. Sounds like " waaamp - waaamp- waaaamp - now it especially does it after long drives but when cool starts up fine. any clues?

probably. mine would do that alot when hot and left me stuck at a gas station for a few hours till it cooled enough to start again. a new starter completly fixed the issue. also check your ground and battery connections. if the part store checks the starter and it checks good, replace it anywyas

Clean all connections, battery posts, and replace any cables that look corroded/green.

well usually when you go there to get a new starter they will test the old one on a machine to see if its actually bad or not. but as you see it works when cold and not when hot so testing it on a machine wount prove anything. i hate when parts stores test starters or alternators cause i know for a fact there bad but there machines test it good. ill have them tested 5 or more times till it eventually passes as good. the last starter i tested didnt even budge and somehow tested good

Bronco Info: 1984 with a 351W, HEI Dist, Hedman headers, Holly carb, C6, 3in suspension lift, 35in Falken tires.
I had the same issue. I replaced the starter thinking since it was the origanal from 84. nope didnt fixed it, replaced the starter solenoid relay and that helped but didnt fixed it completely... replaced the positive cable from battery to starter solenois relay and taadaaaa...

When in doubt... use more duct tape...
1984 with a ecently rebuilt 351W, comp. cam, Holly carb and intake, 3in suspension lift, sitting on 35's

o and if you do get a new starter, you might wanna go to PMGR starter. requires alittle bit more effort but its well worth it. they used the PMGR on later model engines so ask for a starter for a 95.

From my experience (which ain't much lol), it's usually a cable issue as noted above.......

Dirty connections are usually to blame. Without undoing them and cleaning them, they may look ok, but did you take upon the necessary measures to make SURE they are ok and clean?

load test the battery.

and if the cables are factory they could be bad

Try this first. But it could be a weak battery or a weak starter. I have gone through 3 of them (starters) in the 10 years I have had my Bronco.

I would say check your starter relay and your positive wire to your starter. This happened to me in my 92 a couple years back. Fix the small stuff before you spend a hundred bucks on a starter

not engine/
either wiring, battery, or starter.
IMO, heat soak.
but the others are very easy to check/ clean first.

and if you come to the conclusion of heat soak, a mini torque/ PMGR did it for me.. and a heat wrap on headers and heat wrap on starter. maybe overkill, but working so far.

im hoping you got this fixed by now but in case you havent.... its on the passengerside fenderwell... just follow the red cable....

When in doubt... use more duct tape...

LOL. Check the "s" terminal on the relay. Thats the one that always gives me trouble. I have to go out there and give it a wiggle every now and then when she won't start..... lol yeaaa buddy
