mercury cougar motor questions?

so I blew at least one head on my 302 several months ago and the truck has just been sitting. I have been debating doing something trick like a 4bt or just going back with a stock 302 or something inbetween.

I just got offered a free 5.0 from a 1987 mercury cougar xr7. less than 100k miles on car when wrecked sideways in a ditch.

my questions are...
1.how does this motor compare? same?
2.would yall put the longblock straight in and switch the stock stuff over to it or would you do a stroker setup or something cool?
3.I have another truck I'm driving right now... should i hold out for a frito truck to show up?

I realize that some of my questions are just for your opinions but I'm very undecided right now on what direction to head in. I do feel like a little extra power would be nice going up hill (my truck is not lifted) but maybe my motor was just tired....

No EEC or other hassles, I'd just have fun swapping parts. LOL :)

Right after you get it bolted in, hit the key and go for a drive. ;)

As far as rings, bearings, valve guides/seals etc, check all that out
while you got it out, but if they're within spec... keep 'em.

There'll be plenty of future opportunities to take advantage of in
a whole different way?

The long block is basically the same. Only real difference would be the cam (the Cougar should have had an HO, so it's a hydraulic roller with a bit more lift) and the pistons (HO's had TRW forged pistons). Swap the oil pan, pump, pickup, intake and exhaust manifolds and front accessories and ride. I just swapped an HO 5.0 from my 91 Mustang into my 88 Bronco and it runs great.

The stroker setup will end up costing quite a bit. Ballpark $800+ for the stroker kit, then machine work (boring the block, having the lower cylinder walls cut to clear the longer rods).....and you would still have a stroked short block with E7 heads, which would negate any hp gain from the increased displacement.


88 Bronco XLT (was stock, now has a 91 HO roller motor)
90 Mustang GT (not much left that's stock)
96 F-150 XL (it has A/C!!!)
81 Chevy C-10 (wrecked)

Check the heads. They should be E7TE, but a few 86 E6TE heads could have slipped out in 87 on an H.O. engine.

If there E6 heads, well that brings up a few issues with engine mods. That and E6 Heads suck.

Were all cougar motors HO or just certain ones? I grabbed a engine from a 86 cougar didnt check the model but its a roller engine. Just changed over my intake, carb, headers, valve covers and oil pan.

87-88 cougar / t-bird had basically the same engine as the crown vic. Cast pistons, peanut cam, E6SE heads. It is not an HO

E6 heads are a problem. The heads suck, and the pistons are flat tops.

And your right it is E6SE, not E6TE. My bad.

what was teh stock truck motor rated at? comparable hp? torque?

if the heads suck... which i believe you... will i notice on a stock truck or is that more likely to be a problem with lifts tires more hp etc?

also would it be better for me to find new heads for the motor I have and freshen it up? are there say mustang gt heads that are really beefy or some jazz?

take the engine from the mercury, Change the oil pump/pickup/pan front accessories, go get a set of GT40 heads from a junkyard if you can. Make sure it is all within spec and replace necessary seals/gaskets. If you can get a bassani or other better Y pipe and some headers. Probably the best bang for your buck, but the other guys on here can correct me if Im wrong. It would be nice to have a block to freshen up without decommissioning your ride.

If you had the cash, look into a 4bt swap, they put out more torque, though not as much HP, but when your getting close to 30MPG I would rock it if I had the coin.

I put a '90 Grand Marquee engine in my rig without too much issues. The one thing that I did run into is that the car's block did not have a provision for the knock sensor (just a freeze plug in it's place) I've been running without the knock sensor without issue and get no codes.

On performance wise, i think the engine from the Grand Marquee is rated only a few HP higher than the bronco (maybe only 5hp?) It is slow, but then again, most cars/trucks from the bronco's time period were slow/low HP anyways. I haven't noticed any gains or decrease in performance.
