80-86 interior cheesy?

I recently sold my Bronco and am looking for another. I love 87-91's interior and exterior the most but also really like the looks of the 80-86 years and I have recently come across some good deals on 80-86's. I already have a brick nose truck so if I bought a 87-91 Bronco I'd swap to the newer front clip because I dislike the 92-96 interior.

I've never been inside an 80-86 truck so no idea what to expect from the interior. I've got an idea in my head where it feels really cheesy like an early 90's Chevy. Is the interior decent? Does it crack and break every time you do interior work? My daily driver is a 90's Dodge Ram and the interior is trashed and everything is broken and falling apart.

Thanks!

1989 Bronco

It is cheesy....

should be similar to your truck though. Alot of stuff I've replaced I got from F series.

I like the 78-79 gauges and dash....Or the later years are nice too.

But done right they are okay.

I have a bunch of interior pics on my amateur restoration thread. My end game with stock interior would be either the bullnose with a 87-91 dash like this

Or if you get it all blacked out and add some soft surfaces and textures I think it's more modern looking. Like this

Im adding integrating USBs and aux and such.... Creature comforts are lacking in the older ones too

I don't think it's cheesy. 80-86 has the best dash from 78-96 in my opinion. I love my 85 dash but the 89 dash ain't bad either. I just really dislike the 92-96 dash. That one feels cheesy and cheap but I know not everyone agrees. Also, I don't think anything is prone to cracking in the 80-86 other than the dash pad if it is brittle. Mine has cracks in the center and my extra one does also, just not as bad. And you can't compare a dodges interior. I hated the dash in my 90s dodge, everything on that truck seemed cheap.

I think I'll vote "no cheese" for our 1981 Bronco interior. It is simple, relatively easy to take apart and put back together, and I have not cracked anything working on it. As time goes by, I find myself liking more of a no-frills vehicle..... other than creature comforts like heat and air, give me real shift linkages as opposed to push-buttons, crank windows rather than electric, manual door locks, manual hubs, carburetor rather than FI/emission kludge, etc...... I hope to keep our 1981 Bronco forever!

Comparing to our 1996 F250, it's a little different, but I DO have a tank selector switch that has cracked on it. CHEESY way of mounting that switch.... so far have not looked at it enough to determine if I can fix it, or need to order a new switch. (F250 is a PowerStroke, so that switch is 2-3 times more expensive than the one for a gas model, for some reason....)

My switch never broke but I had issues with the selector valve itself. Replaced with new motorcraft part and that one junked out a few months later as well. I still have that one and a new motorcraft one of the newer version. Ended up mounting a manual valve made by Parker next to my drivers seat. I like manual and there's really no way that one could fail.

I don't think the 80-86 dash is cheesy - well maybe the XLT wood trim is!! I like the no-wood treatment on the Custom interior better. But I don't like how the lighter is in the drop down ash tray. I would prefer tin the dash somewhere.

The only part on mine that's cracked is where the dash mount speaker was. The rest is great. By far my favorite of the Bronco dashes. Mine was a base model, and the dash pieces has a sort of carbon fiber texture. I don't have any AC vents in mine either... Something that you can't not have from 87 up.

I like my 80 - 86 interior quite a bit.

I've seen the early 90s Chevy interior and I think they tried to make it look too "new age" while not being able to get away from that dated boxy look, and the end result was not good.
Ford simply went for a nice clean look that was functional, and it saved it from looking too era specific (which can make it look cheesy).

About the only thing I think that makes it look cheesy is some of the particular colors it comes in.

I loved my 94 blue interior. Did some "stuff" in there, but there was no camera...

I agree with pepe. Red is gross, and that's someone who had a red 90 f150 with red interior.

I happen to really like blue interiors, and since nobody has posted the rear panels yet, here's my old 85. The non-stock blue shag carpet was a little cheesy though. I'm not sure if this was just an 80-86 thing, but the hard top bolt cover trim was always warped in all the parts broncos I have looked at. You can see it in this picture.

I always thought the 87-91 interiors were a little ugly, and 92-96 felt cheap.

I'm in the process of painting all my plastic interior parts black.

To the OP's question, I have found some cracks around the mounting holes on the dash. I've found PVC glue works good and I've reinforced some with aluminum duct tape. The dash pad was completely cracked up from the Arizona sun. But, overall I like the interior, just need to find a good method to install a cupholder or two.

I'm a fan of porno red! Black is always good. I'm really tired of gray and tan interiors.

Even though I'm 17 I have to agree; the red has grown on me, the black is a bit overdone but still classy, IMO a nice dark grey would look good (92-93 gray), the blue and green bother me most

Thanks guys! When I owned a '92 Bronco I had all sorts of broken interior pieces. It was very discouraging and eventually traded it. I loved driving it and and I miss driving a Bronco.

This will broaden my range. One Bronco I was looking at had the wood grain trim lol

Dad had a 90 5.8 with fender flares green and tan with 35s on Micky classics. I drove it many times.

Loved that truck, clean simple interior that I preferred over the 80-86 but I just don't like the nose on the bricks. I'd like to dash swap like the picture the guy did in the black truck with red shift knob

I have a blue interior that is relaxing to look at while driving, but, is, by no means, "modern." I'm doing the "Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric" in charcoal gray. With proper surface prep, that stuff works great. I sprayed some test pieces a few years ago and they are, still, holding up great. No fading/cracking/peeling. Not even in the AZ heat. I'm tempted to try some highlighting trim in black chrome, but, I haven't decided yet. It would be a gray-on-gray type theme with the black chrome sheen as the accent aesthetic.
