Instrument Panel help or Atlanta Shop recommendation

Hi - I've had my 94 EB 5.8 for about a month now and I love it. It's a project for me, although it's in pretty good shape.

My instrument cluster went out, the #10 4A fuse keeps popping. I am not that sharp with electrical work, although I did give tracing the problem the old college try. I have watched countless youtube videos, have searched the forums but it still doesn't make sense.

I'd love some help figuring out how to trouble shoot from my instrument panel back to the fuse box (if that is even a thing that makes sense), or the name of any trusted shops in the Atlanta area that can work on Broncos. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yo Mcoleman,
Welcome!
I found Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) for fuse 10 issues, but found this,
TSB 96-08-15 Erratic Compass & Map Lamp Operation - Vehicles Built Through 2/1/96

Publication Date: APRIL 8, 1996

LIGHT TRUCK:
1993-96 EXPLORER
1994-96 BRONCO

ISSUE: Map lamp switch and/or overhead compass function operation is irregular, and/or map lamp bulbs may burn out on some vehicles. Installation of revised parts should resolve this issue.

ACTION: Replace the map lamp, switch, compass and wiring harness with a revised Overhead Console Kit (F67Z-78519C42-AA). Refer to Instruction Sheet #7151, included with the kit, for service procedure.

The Overhead Console Kit (F67Z-78519C42-AA) includes the following:
One (1) Map Lamp Assembly
One (1) Map Lamp Button
One (1) Compass
One (1) Wiring Harness
One (1) Modification Label
One (1) Instruction Sheet (I.S. #7151)

Fuse Block & Power Distribution Box (PDB) diagrams attached.
Cluster including radio, rear window control switch, ashtray, 4wd electronic shit-on-the-fly switch, overhead console, heater control panel illumination wiring diagram is attached.
May need to disconnect radio, ashtray, etc. Connectors to hunt down the short.
Our 96s cigar lighter witring chaffed & shorted on ashtray frame.

illumination
Check harnesses A & B for a possible short at aluminum support brace. Look up from under dash. Also look for ham-handed wiring hacks under dash near the harnesses.

Here's the schematic, notice that fuse #10 feeds more than just your instrument panel. What was the last thing you did to the truck before the lights went out? (if anything)
Click on the link below the schematic to enlarge the schematic. Back around page 60-1 are the rest of the instrument panel schematics. (click the previous/next links in the upper left corner to navigate the EVTM.

And welcome to FSB.

Chances are pretty good that it's related to the radio wiring if you have an aftermarket stereo or the ashtray lighting if you smoke.

You guys are way smarter than me! I'm going to study these and see if I can figure it out. I did pull the OH console out two weeks ago to send off for a new computer, I disconnected everything though, the harness end is still dangling up there. As far as I remember, I was driving home one night and the lights just blinked out.

I found where the stereo was the culprit in other similar threads, so I pulled out the after market unit yesterday and looked it over, everything looks good as far as wiring there. The only anomaly I could see were two wires that came with the stereo that didn't seem to have a corresponding home on the bronco, so they just had butt connectors on the end to tie them off (not to each other.)

I also bought a new headlight switch and swapped it out, to no avail. The gray clip (not sure of the name, it's the clip that connects to the switch) still looks good on that, no burnt ends or fusing. I traced what I think is the ground wire (driver side fender, right under the coil for the hood, and everything looked ok there.

I appreciate the help! I'm going to keep digging...

Yo,
Did you disconnect the radio connector and see if fuse blows? Also see if radio harmees wires have been assaulted by a previous owner or shop.

Do same for ash tray lamp, rear window control switch, 4wd electronic shit-on-the-fly switch, & heater control panel .

There has to be a pin point test for the fuse, if i get a spare minute i will look it up in the shop manual.

Yo,
Correct, because it is fed from fuse 10; As well as:
rear window control switch illumination
4wd electronic shift-on-the-fly switch illumination
heater control panel illumination
and all cluster (gauges) illumination
Plus radio & overheadmap lights that you have eliminated from perp list.

Pull connectors to all above. Buya few #10 4 amp fuses
Put new #10 fuse in and it should not blow
Reconnect one connector at a time until fuse blows, that will be the circuit to inspect.
