As long as you're confident that the axle was originally from a '73-'79, you should still be able to find what you need. Dana 44 internals didn't change all that much at all. It should have 30-spline axles, which means its a "later" open knuckle axle. And you probably know this, but a good master rebuild kit will come with new slingers and such...but ask about inner axle seals 'cause some have 'em and some don't. Sometimes there are differences on the outer end from the knuckles out (seal and bearing-wise), but unless the axle has been completely disassembled you should be able to find the numbers you need off of the original parts. Worst case scenario there'd only be 1-2 or at most three different possibilities, so you could find what you need by process of elimination if you HAD to. I doubt it would be necessary to go that route, and again this is only with the "knuckles-out" assembly. As long as you know the pedigree of the axle, any good gear shop like Randy's will steer you right.
