OK, I need to start at the beginning. I was driving a late model F-150 when I bought my 1986 Bronco a little over 5 years ago. The 86 already had a D44 SAS and was more fun to drive than my pick-up. I decided I could get rid of a car payment by selling the F-150 and picking up a stock Bronco for my daily driver. The plan was to keep it mostly stock and put my energy into the 86.

I found the 1996 XL on Craigslist for $3400 bone stock. AC was the only option. We are talking 5 speed, roll up windows, rubber floors and no cruise control.... perfect!!

Here are the boys together. They both have grown so much since then, how cute!

Although the plan was to keep my daily driver stock, I was able to convince the GF that I at least needed a little bit of lift and some tires. So, I started with a 2.5" Rough County kit. They get a bad rap sometimes but I was happy with it.

Before:

After:

I thought I would give Treadwright Retreds a try. I was very happy with these 31's. The price was right and they performed great!

And while I was at it, I wire wheeled and painted the exposed frame. Moving to Arizona from Upstate NY, this was a novelty for me!

Over the last few years I feel like I have really got my suspension dialed in, at least by TTB standards. The 2.5" Rough Country kit may be inexpensive but I have had good luck with it and have found myself defending them as a company in other threads. I have a 20 degree RTI ramp I build out of scrap I dragged home from the landfill and use it to get a before and after of any change I make. The Rough Country kit, even with cheesey radius arm drop brackets, helped me flex more than stock:

My buddy and I wanted to get out of town for a weekend and Moab is less than 5 hours from here. I also had just put brand new Goodyear MT/Rs on the 86 and we couldn't help ourselves and stuffed the 35's under the 96. Little brother got to borrow the shoes but couldn't make them fit. This required us to pull the bumper. This wasn't the best decision and I regret the body damage I now have to live with. Oh well, we had fun in Moab!!

About to leave Flagstaff:

Monument Valley is on the way:

Without a winch, an open diff in the front and no armor, we stuck to the easier stuff in Moab. Lots of slick rock. The scenery is so amazing here that you can have a good time regardless of the difficulty of the trail.

After having to go bumperless to Moab I decided it was time to get busy. I found this 7" x 3" piece of L-shaped 1/4" steel at my local scrap yard. They will sell anything they have laying around by the pound. With a little trial and error, I notched it so I could fold the ends in.

I welded a 2" x 1/4" flat bar to the bottom to give it a more finished 3D look.

Some thick tube welded in the frame will keep me from squeezing the walls in.

I used a spaghetti jar top to cut this 1" bar with my plasma. Cutting steel that thick was at the edge of the machine's ability but it came out OK. I then tacked the two together for grinding.

I added a piece of tube, installed a 2" receiver tube and painted everything in Rustoleum truck bed coating and called version 1 complete.

each state is different, but in fl at 15 you can get your learners permit, you have to have a adult in the passenger seat when you drive. and a year after you get your permit you can get your license by taking a really easy 15 min long driving test. if our test was as hard as the European tests so many people would fail, our test is a joke compared to the ones there.
with my permit i would mostly drive with my mom in a gmc safari van, but my dad had to get a bigger truck about 4 months before i got my license so this bronco was my first car.

these are also from citrus, these were about 3 months before my license, the last ones were about a week before.

Some new photo from last weekend.

Brothers in arms:-))) Old monster K-701 tractor - what's tire diameter? :-)))
It was technical help for my friends, they are farmers and have some old machinery. We are checked and tuned brakes and repair tranny lever at this beast. BTW, this tractor have automatic tranny too, like as BKO:-))), but with crazy number of gears in transfer case - high, low, super-low-:))) - overall 24, including rear and any variants with hi and low.

At farm with Lend Rover Defender behind.
