Since we bought out I've done a pile of work to her, and more to come yet. Once I'm up and moving for the day, I'll throw some pics up from back when I got her to now. Quite a change!

The Start of my Bronco Obsession

Hey Guys thanks for your patience and the honor of running for FSM. I was out backpacking with my son all last week. I just got back a few hours ago.

Here is how she looks today:

My Bronco story actually started back when I was in elementary school. There was an art contest and the theme of the contest was “I have a dream..” My theme was “I have a dream to own a Bronco”, and I drew a picture of a Bronco driving in the hills.
I remember reading 4wheeler magazine and the cover feature was two brothers who owned 78 or 79 Broncos. They were big & black and I wanted one!

Problem was life always seemed to get in the way of me actually owning my own. First it was school, then it was getting married, then it was a house, then kids. The day did finally come when everything in my life lined up for me to get my dream Bronco. That was the fall of 1996. Problem was that Ford stopped making the Bronco in the spring. Given how long I had waited and the fact that I had very specific ideas of the Bronco I wanted, none of the ones still sitting on the dealer lots fit.

Anyone still have their original sales brochure? I do..lol

I went to the newspaper classifieds. Some of you guys remember those right? I found a guy selling my dream Bronco and I bought it. It was pretty high mileage, for as “new” as it was- 23,000 miles, but I didn’t care, it was perfect.

Here are a few pictures from my photo album. Yes, I have actual printed pics in photo albums that I had to go find these from

I am such a dork but I sure am happy! Broncos will do that to you.

Its fun to look back on these old pictures and see how the Bronco used to look. I'll post up some more later but I wanted to get the ball rolling!

Well, I am currently in Texas and all of my pictures are back on my other computer in Michigan. I can at least give the story of mine thus far though. It started when my Dad bought the bronco as a toy for my stepmom, but she didn't like how big it was, so they got her a 77 instead. My buddy and I would always sit in the 78 and pretend we were out driving around and wheeling. A few years later, they were tired of it sitting around, so they were going to scrap it. I was 15 at the time, and when they asked if I wanted it, I was extremely excited. Of course I said YES! Ever since then it has been my money pit, but I have loved every minute of it! I have been upgrading it here and there and it is beginning to head in the direction I want. Hopefully y'all will enjoy the ride, and I will start to post pics Tuesday night.

Next weekend is another Silver Lake trip, and I just acquired a new camera so hopefully I'll be able to snap some pics/videos!

Here's a little shot of the steering links I built. I used boiler tubes, 1.75x .25
They are super beefy! 7/8 x 3/4 heims, same for the Trac bar

New Rims!

Happy 4th of July to Everyone!!

Whats the first thing most young guys do when they buy a new vehicle? New rims right? well, at least this is what I did.

Here are my new American Eagle Racing Rims.

What to do with a new truck with new rims? Take it out and play in the mud with it, that what you do!!

This little adventure cost me $50 at the car wash to get all cleaned up.

My kids are so young in all these pics. My daughter is now 19 and my son is 17. Heck, I am way young in these pictures. The Bronco has been part of our family for a long long time.

I hope everyone has a fun and safe 4th!

Lift install

Morning FSB!!

To continue my Bronco story:

What to do with a Bronco that is barely 4 months old? (Recall my elementary days of the Big 78's in 4wheeler mag?) It needed to be taller!! I didn't want to go quite that big, but I did want it higher. Warranty? who needs a stinking warranty?..lol

Problem was I was a novice. I stumbled across another Bronco focused forum that shall remain nameless. Most of its members (including me) switched over to what is still today, FullsizeBronco.com.

I read and researched all I could. I eventually settled on a Dick Cepek lift. Problem was Cepek had recently sold his company and the lift was no longer being made and I could not find a vendor with any in stock. I somehow stumbled across how to contact Dick personally. He was a great guy and answered all my questions and he tried to help me track down one. I ended up with one that was still sitting in his garage.

I went with Cepek 6" Stage II lift with Rancho RS9000 shocks.

I also met a lot of great guys on the Bronco Board. One guy- Steve ended up living pretty close to me and offered to not only to help me install the lift, but the use of his time and shop to do it in. This is what the board is all about, guys just helping each other out!

Another great guy I met was Keith (ttbblows). He drove all the way from Durango (to Denver) to help us install it. I have lost touch with Keith, but I still talk to Steve almost 20 years later.

Here are some shots of us installing the lift:

TTB removed

Keith tried to convince me to just leave it out.. lol. Maybe I should have listened.

Beefy Cepek Springs

Steve getting the drop down brackets in

Keith doing.. something... I guess..

Extended radius arms getting installed.

Shocks all installed ( not sure why we put one in upside down, but its fixed now.)

Tires back on

Working on the rear

All done!

I wish I had the cash for new tires at the same time, but I had to wait.

I hope everyone had a great 4th, at least its a short work week!

I will post some more tomorrow, but for now here is the good ole' before and after! Visually there isn't a huge change, but mechanically you had better believe it's 1000x better!

These two pics are from when my Dad first bought it, back in 2005! It use to be a plow truck, hence the rusty body I assume. AND it also use to have round headlights. All you round headlight fanatics, please don't have me banned for changing them!

And here are some pics from the last couple weeks.

OOPS!

Tomorrow I will start getting into the upgrades I have done/plan to do!

Got her stripped besides the bumpers. Gonna get a two part epoxy primer tomorrow. Lots of work stripping everything really, but it'll pay off.

Right before primer she'll be Cleaned with wax and grease remover, tack cloth, then spray time!

Carnage Wednesday?

As far as carnage goes, I have had very little. (Knock on wood)
I really can't complain too much, but here is some of the breakages I have had in the last few years.

Spool broke, trashing my gears. Turns out it was a lightweight spool, and I replaced it with a beefier one.

Jumping this big of a truck without axle trusses isn't too bright... I should really practice what I preach.
Cracked a 9" housing.

And the only time I have broken the front end is when a U-joint spit a cap. i have since milled my shafts for full circle snap rings and haven't had a problem since.

Apparently doing burnouts on pavement was a bit much for my wheel studs. Totally busted one side and lost the tire, and this is what the other side looked like.

New Tires!

The next step in my Bronco evolution was new tires. I wish I could have run right out and bought some after installing the lift, but sadly my truck suffered from "skipping legs day" for a few months.

At Steves shop we test fitted some 35s on it. They looked pretty good.

I really like the picture of my son pretending to jack up the truck. Start 'em young they say. It must have worked because he loves the Bronco as much as I do now.

Random pics at Steves with a herd of Bronco's..

As much as I liked the 35's I ended up going a bit more modest with 33” AT tires.

A few pics of the new 33's

They main reason I went with 33's was because I wanted to still be able to have it fit in our garage. We get lots of hail storms in CO. In fact I have had to put a new roof on my house 3 times in the 18 years we have lived here.

Found a pic from the last hail storm:

I also wanted to keep the Bronco as nice as possible for as long as possible, not to mention that it was also my commute vehicle at that time. Gas was about $1.00 a gallon at that time, hard to believe..

New Tires, now what?

The Bronco for us has always been a multi-purpose vehicle . We use it ton of different ways. With that in mind, I have always tried to walk that line when upgrading and modifying it so that it never looses any of its versatility.

There are far better built mud trucks, rock crawlers, show trucks, etc than mine on this site. Trust me, you guys have build some amazing rigs!

The local Bronco group was planning a few trail rides. With the new lift installed and new tires I wanted to see what she could do. I did still have a few mandatory items on my list of modifications before I hit any trails. Namely a CB and some recovery points.

Up first was the CB. Like most things Bronco related, I didn't know much about them. I hit the forum for some advice and ended up going with this Uniden Pro 520xl. I liked it because it was in my price range and smaller than some other units out there.

The truck was still so new and I didn't want to do a lot of mods to build an overhead mounting point so I settled for putting it here:

Its not the best location in terms of hearing the speaker and sometimes grabbing the mic can be a stretch, but its out of the way and easy to mount up.

For the antenna I went with a 4' Firefly.
I ran the wire down the passenger side under the carpet, then under the door trim finally behind the rear panel and out the tailgate. I know mounting it that low on the spare tire rack is not optimal for signal, but I still wanted to be able to get it in and out of the garage.

A fellow Bronco board member had an SRS meter and came over and tuned it up for me. Even with the low mounting point, it still tuned up fine. It worked well enough on the trails, but that will be a post for another day..

I first started the bronco project by going through the 351m and freshening it up a bit, using parts from my Dad's old 400. I was happy with the power of that engine for about.... a month.
It ran really well though and would turn 5500 RPM all day long.

Here is how it was when I first popped the hood, to that exciting moment when I got to fire it again!

We also had to build exhaust for this thing, so 6 hours later, this is what we came up with.

Now anybody that follows my build thread knows that none of this exists anymore... About a year later, I bought a bronco with a 460 in it. But we will get to that later!
