With the CB all installed it was time to move to recovery points.

Once again I went to FSB to see what everyone was doing for recovery points. There were some really creative ideas out there, including using Super Duty hooks (which I think is really cool!), but in the end I decided to go simple and cheap.

I just bought a couple of hooks and drilled holes in the frame rail and presto front recover hooks.

One problem I did see with mounting the hooks were I did, is the potential for the strap to damage the plastic air dam, so I took the time to grind out the rivets and remove it. It may seem easier to just cut the plastic, but I wanted to preserve it so I could put it back on if I ever needed to. 20 years later I am glad I did. After getting my winch bumper I was able to bolt back on the air dam and sell the front bumper!

Air dam all removed. It actually makes the truck appear to sit higher with it off. I had just washed it, truck so all the liquid under the truck is water not oil or radiator fluid..

For the rear I went simple with a trailer hitch clevis: I found out later that, boy does the hitch hang down low and drag on everything.

I drove the Bronco into work today. Boy does she shine in the early morning sun!

While the whole "Rust or Bust" thing is kind of my bronco's persona, I really am a little jealous of your bronco. That thing is super nice for its age!

Okay now that just looks like it was fun to paint! I typically don't care for the camo paint look, but this turned out pretty sweet. And I love how you call it "our" rig. I know from personal experience that growing up working on trucks is the best kind of father/child bonding there is.

I will be at Silver Lake Sand Dunes all weekend, meaning I won't be able to post here, so I thought I would post something extra today. Two years ago I did decent at the Schuss Mountain Snow Challenge, and I had my GoPro with me, so I took some in-cab footage. Also here is a link to exterior shots of my races with time stamps of when I run. I suspect the 2017 SMSC will be better with the suspension upgrades I am doing. You will notice how bouncy the ride was with the old setup.

Here is the in-cab footage.

Here is the video of the entire event. My first two races in this video aren't in the above video.
My runs are at
9:46
26:35
2:05:39
2:08:50
2:15:13
2:18:06

I'm back at it with the paint job today. Getting all the details taken care of...(I hope)! Some trim that was chrome or aluminum, now blacked out with self etching satin black primer.

Rims took the paint awesomely

So did the headlight bezel

And the badges, even the Eddie Bauer ones in there

Webster Pass

Morning FSB!

On the drive home last night a couple of teenagers gave me the thumbs up at a stop light. I rolled down my window and they said my Bronco was the nicest, cleanest Bronco they had ever seen. Was nice to hear they appreciated it.

Webster Pass was one of the first runs I made with the Bronco. Nothing super technical, but again, my truck is not, nor will it ever been the greatest rock crawler out there

Beautiful up there, thats Webster pass way off in the distance. The faint line is the road heading up the mountain:

some of the driving in.

I thought his shot was pretty cool:

Up on top!:

Funny story with this pic. A few jeeps told me the Bronco was too big and it would never make it up the pass. I guess they were waiting for the carnage at this super narrow spot. The guy emailed me this pic saying he couldn't believe I made it past there. Its a really zoomed in shot so its hard to see, but I have to admit, it was a VERY narrow spot. Not to mention the 600' plus drop off if you mess up.

My son is taking the Bronco up to Tahosa, a scout camp in the mts for the week. That means I will be son-less and bronco-less. Let the withdrawals start..lol

Hope everyone has a fun safe weekend.

There he goes..

looking good. any issues with the visor install?

just want to let everyone know... it's great to see you all competing, to one degree or another.
makes a world of difference to see the different rigs going at it. much more enjoyable, imho.

@Biker PepeŽ the visor went on easy enough with some help for sure.

My daughter's helped me get the top on right before a little thunder storm. I think it matches great.

When I first started doing my SAS I was not planning the paint job to come. So here's how I finished my hp d44 to start with...

And after I got the camo stencils I went back and changed it up....

Ignore my messy work bench I said!

Traveling Bronco

As I mentioned in one of my earlier posts, the Bronco is an all purpose vehicle for us.

Here is one of our cross country ventures. We took a 2 week 2400 mile trip to visit my parents in Oregon. Lots of pictures of the vacation but not too many with the Bronco in it.

The ball tree somewhere in the middle of NV or UT..

My wife loves to shop and on this trip she bought a bunch of stuff for our house and we stuffed the Bronco full of it.

More upgrades:

For the longest time I had a cassette tape deck in the Bronco. I scored this head unit for $50. It brought me into this century for playing music. It has bluetooth, ipod, and usb port. Hi tech compared to what I used to have. My kids were really glad to be able to listen to their music after I put this in.

Hackett Gulch

Happy Monday FSB. Lets get the week started..

Next up was a run of Hackett Gulch. I was pleased with how well my Bronco did on this trail run. There were places where I thought for sure it would never be able to handle, but it did just fine.

Here is my truck at the trailhead:

You can see we had quite a crew running that day:

Sort of hard to see but this is me coming off the first obstacle.

Some of the hill climbing:

What goes up must come down:

This is the line up waiting for Hackett Rock

Me making my way up Hackett Rock. Its hard to see but this obstacle has a deep rut at the bottom, then you have to climb the rock and turn partway up to avoid the rocks by the tree. You can't go too far because of the shelf rock on the other side:

Almost there:

Crossing the Platte River:

Lunch time, lots of good conversation:

Somewhere along the trail:

Paul playing in a very deep mud hole:

Mud hole:

Oops popped a bead.. That's my Blondie son in the front of this picture.

Climbing a loose steep hill:

At the end of a fun day:

At this point, 96Bronco is working my vote. You Know me, I like myself a Bronco that hits the trail rather than an a all show and no go. I never have wanted to be a wanna be!!! I"m just waiting to see the picture when his foot steps become rock sliders. =^D
