During my SAS, I fabbed up as much as I could at home. Here's a shot of my extended radius arms...

I used a pair of stock ones cut off, and sleeved into 2.25" tubing.

I bent them 17 so they landed back out near the frame.

Toy Hauler

Morning FSB!

There are some great rigs to choose from this month, not an easy choice. I am going to continue make my case for building and using the Bronco in almost every way Ford could have thought of when they designed it. And a few they didn't think of.. haha

I wheel it, haul with it, travel in it, wrench on it, still feel like I can take my wife to a fancy dinner in it, not to mention use it for some amazing family bonding time, just to name a few...

Broncos are also make great toy haulers right! Here is us getting ready for a family 4wheeler trip.

All loaded up

"Is it ok if I ride back here Dad?"

Kids can't wait to get them unloaded:

Come on Dad, unload the trailer already..

Ready to roll:

This little guy thinks he driving... soon enough kid!

My son is back from scout camp with the Bronco today. Withdrawals over, expect he turns right around and leaves tomorrow for Philmont. He will be gone for 2 weeks.. :(

I'm doing my best to entertain you guys with daily posts, hope you enjoy. I am sure having fun telling my Bronco story.

Snow truck! or Fire Truck?

super early post today, but I am heading off to NM to drop my son off at Philmont for 2 weeks of staffing the NAYLE program. Back to the Bronco..

The Bronco is not the most fuel efficient vehicle , but it is sure is solid in the snow and blizzards that Colorado gets sometimes. I can't tell you the number of people I have pulled out of the ditch on days like the one below.

Fun when you wake up to this:

And then come home to this: lol

Bonus pics because they were taken from the Bronco:
My son took the truck up to Tahosa and literally drove right through the Cold Springs fire as it was just getting going. They shut down the road less than an hour later

Coming up on the fire

fire off to the left in the picture

Ground cover has already been burned here:

Double Post Sunday

After a marathon drive down to Philmont in NM and the right back home this morning (4 hours each way), I decided the Bronco needed a bath. After spending a week with my son up in the mountains it was pretty dirty.

She cleans up pretty good for a 20 year old truck.

Another thing I made was a transmission crossmember. I needed something to be dual purpose in a sense...the crossmember, and a mounting point for radius arms.

Installed with the attatchment points on...

I am currently working on the rear suspension and should have it done this week. I built an upper shock mount crossmember, new deaver springs, and some bilstein 7100's are on their way. I'll be posting all the work and some videos of how all the new suspension works! Stay tuned!

Maintenance and Repairs

As great as our Bronco's are, they still have stuff that wears out. I mentioned it in a different post that a great way to save money is to do you own repairs and maintenance.

There are few, if any, repairs that I won't tackle on the Bronco. Plus the more you know about your truck the better off you are.

Not to mention quality time with my son passing on real world skills. The cooling system is one project that we tackled. New hoses, water pump and radiator and fluid of course.

Here is everything all torn out:

New vs. old water pump:

New Radiator:

No idea what shop would charge for this type of work, but I know I saved a ton of $, plus I know its done right!

a shot of it all put back together:

This shot makes me proud. I came home from work one day and my son was under the hood doing something. Love that he has this kind of interest in the Bronco.

The knowledge he has picked up from us working on the Bronco even translates to his job. He works at the local Dry Cleaners and the owner has had him rewiring switches, repairing the boiler and tuning up the compressor. He even called my son on his day off to ask him if he could help with his personal car maintenance. Now I think that is so cool!!

Boy Scouts!

I am heavily involved in the Boy Scout program. I am an Eagle Scout and so is my son (a post for another day). The Bronco has been a big part of our involvement.

Owning Bronco's, you guys probably know the routine. People asking you to do this and that because its the only vehicle that can handle the job. Boy Scouts is very similar. I am usually the one who ends up hauling the troop trailer around to our various outings. This little trailer is heavy and pulling the 8% grades up into the Rockies is no small task, but the Bronco handles it every time.

One such adventure was the annual "14er" climb. I lead a climb of one of Colorados 14,000ft tall mountains.

What was extra special about this trip was that my son had written in to the editors of Boys Life Magazine about our annual hike and they wanted to come out and do a story on it.

Bronco all hooked up.

Boys and all their gear in the back of the Bronco.

Adults getting all ready

We ended up on the cover of the magazine and having a 7 page spread inside. That's me second from left in red hat and my son it right next to me 3rd from left.

I won't bore you with all 7 pages of the magazine. My son was in several pictures and quoted a couple of times in the magazine. That's him front and center leading the hikers and him again in the bottom pic attending to another scouts blister. Pretty Cool! first time I have ever been in a magazine.

It took quite a bit of searching, since I live in such a rural state, but I found my solid axle dana44 about 300 miles from my house. Here's how it looked when I got home. My wife seriously could only see garbage here!

I enjoy photography and I have a decent camera I like to take when we go to the dunes and out trail riding, the problem is that it's pretty hard to get pictures/videos of myself. So, I have to rely my friends and their cell phone cameras for anything of me.

We went to silver lake 2 weekends ago, so here is a few vids/pics from the weekend. It's always a blast at the dunes.

I was surrounded by Chevys all weekend.

These whoops kind of caught me off guard, if you can't tell from the commentary If I would have been going faster, it wouldn't have been bad, but oh well it made for a funny video.

http://vid1033.photobucket.com/album...psdah5fiza.mp4

I like to spend time messing around at the drag strip, so here is some of that too.

http://vid1033.photobucket.com/album...pszhgwkbif.mp4

Apparently photobucket didn't want to upload this video, so I went to youtube.

And just some random shots I took of some of my buddies.

Two A Days

I guess its time to step up my game to two a days..

Well sort of anyway, In reality it seems timely and appropriate to post this upgrade, I’ll get to the reason at the end. I mentioned in an earlier post that I had steering and ride quality issues that turned out to be worn out tires, well part of the reason for the worn tires, was that the entire steering system needed to be replaced. I originally went in and put in new ball joints on both sides. I can’t for the life of me find the pictures from that project, but aside from getting them pressed out, it was not too bad of a job. The piece I did not get to was the steering. After reading a great write up by KingFish999 I decided to swap it all over to MOOG. Again the reason I love this board so much, I get to leverage everyone else’s expertise!

MOOG, MOOG, I see MOOG everywhere...

Yup, looks like its time to replace:

Don't forget to install your grease fittings

Quick demonstration of the size difference in parts:

old (top) vs new (bottom)

and more comparison

All put back together. This upgrade is SO worth the money. Steering is much better!

So why is this timely you might ask? Well, sometimes working on the Bronco we get a little beat up, cuts, scrapes busted knuckles etc. I took it to a whole new level. While I was trying to bust loose the nut on the drop Pittman arm, I heard this awful noise coming from my arm, the kind you hear when you are skinning an animal, followed by a loud “pop”, then the pain hit…#$%!!

I ended up fully tearing my bicep tendon. Tomorrow I will be getting surgery done to have it reattached. It’s a 3 month recovery with brace and PT. Depending on how it goes. and how I feel, I may or may not be able to post up tomorrow. I’m sure you guys understand and will cut me some slack… or at least get a good laugh if I post some crazy nonsense because of the good drugs they give me..

At least my son is “fully trained” on the Bronco so the upgrades can continue!!
