custom center console

hey guys.. so I have finally decided to start tackling a custom console..

currently in the stages of mock up.. I used cardboard, ductape, and super glue..

itll be made of mdf and maybe some fiberglass worked in there... ill wrap the entire thing in color matching vinyl.

there will also be a 10 inch NVX subwoofer also in the console, along with 2 6.5 inch speakers.. I drew up how I am going to incorporate both in sketchup..

let me know what yall think!!

I definitely like the look of the sweeping lines, a couple of suggestions of the shape to make it fully functional :

The angled front gauge console is awesome, with room to hide the swtich wiring underneath.

Is the center cut-out for maps and books ? Whatever's in there will fall-out when going round corners.

Ahead of the two cup-holders, I'd open and hollow that section to have an open box to store nic-naks, cell phone, pens, etc.

I assume the rear will hinge open for storage inside. I'd add an elbow pad on top for long distance comfort, and make the inside area a vertical metal sleeve insert that locks, like a Tuffy.

SOLD : 1979 Bronco, 460ci swap, 6" lift with 38s, rebuilt Dana 60 front with ARB locker, Chevy 14-bolt rear with ARB locker and disc brakes, TripleSix custom Bumpers, 12k Winch, + MUCH more..

Thanks..

the angled section up front will actually be a mount for a Kindle fire HD 8.9 and an equalizer.

the center cutout is actually where my 10 inch subwoofer will go..

and yes, ahead of the cup holders will be 2 cigarette lighter (for 12 volt power) a 2 usb power point, and a 110 volt power with converter hidden in console. there will also be a little place to lay nic nacs and what not..

yes, the top will be hinged. it will be wrapped in a comfy foam and covered with the same color matching vinyl the rest of the box will have.. as for the lock box idea, i wont be doing that.. i jhave no need to lock it.. it will have to be opened like any other regular colsole. ill be stealing the release handle off my factory and put on it..

It will be interesting the first time you have an open cold beverage in the cup holder and you the sub hits and sends drink flying all over you.
MATCHBOX likes this.

lol.. its nothing hardcore.. only 300 watts rms.. i was hoping to have the sub box portion ported, but crunching the numbers, i may have to just seal it..

doing it like this will keep my cargo area free and give me the low frequencies i like..

So I started with the second stage of mock up. I'm using osb, plywood, 1x's and whatever else I have laying around.. this will help me get the exact dimensions..

There will be a 3rd and final mockup out of plywood to make sure everything is correct.

So here are some pics.. I still have a little more to do in this stage..

Thanks..

I got a little more done on the console before I had to get ready for work..

Got the back angle about how I want it and placed the tablet where I want it.. plenty of room for the EQ..

Next step is to figure out the sub box portion.. I don't know if I want to compromise some storage space and go with a ported enclosure or more storage and sealed enclosure.. I love the sound of a ported, though.. lol

Git a little done today..

Figured out the cutout for the subwoofer. Cut a few pieces to start figuring out how much volume I'll have for the sub.. tomorrow I hope to have the volume figured out.. then Monday I'll start my final mockup out of plywood

Here's some pics..

Looking good. I am interested to see how it performs, and if it rattles everything in the cupholder/console enough to drive you insane. LOL

Looks nice, if you dont like it, just make it out of MDF next time. You can glue, screw, route that material and it still retains strength without having to cut slices into it to get it to bend.

This looks great. I will be building one myself but no subwoofer. But it gives me ideas. Thanks for sharing the build.

Looking good!

It's about the same process and materials I used to do mine. :)

I'm interested in how you plan to secure yours to the floor? For now I'm using some large "L" brackets to bolt it to the floor where the stock holes are located but using some grade 8 bolts and nuts. How ever I don't think it's going to be enough if I ever get into an accident. It's also a PIA tightening it down because the transmission is in the way.

Thanks..

Do u have a build page for ur console??

I also plan to use the stock mounting holes as well as some brackets attached to the trany cover bolt holes. I don't want to be putting extra holes in the floor..
