I went Tuesday and pulled an 87 Bronco out of a garage and now its mine for
$400.00. I have a little work to do before its all ready but, are there any immediate upgrades I should make? It will need new tires in the future but besides that it seems to be in pretty good shape.
400.00? Wow! Does it run and drive or is it a basket case?
If it is road worthy I would change ALL the fluids and filters then drive it awhile to figure out what it might need such as bushings, suspension, brake and drivtrain parts.
I would put your money in maintence and repair before "upgrades"
What motor etc. do you have?
Sounds like a great deal! Congrats and Welcome! I for one change all fluids on a used 4X4 because you never know what the PO did with it no matter how good it looks. That means all dope in diffs, oil, repack bearings. tcase + trans NOTE>>>>>(inspect first and if its dark in color or smels burt dont touch it!!! leave it in there and search later to understand)<<<<<<!!!! Also check the brake fluid to see if its merky looking, if so plan on that as well. Also have that starter checked at your local parts store before buying one, it might be good and just a starter relay. Good Luck.
Thanks, those are good tips. Yeah i wish i had th original starter the po had taken it off trying to make the wheel extend to the fly wheel and while it was off some crackhead ran off with it. I am going to replace on sat and see what kind of running condition the engine is in after everything is replaced.
Does anyone know where to get a good deal on a set of
31-10.5 R15 LT XC-AT; is there some online site that sells them in bulk
packages at a good deal?
Also, does anyone know where to get a good deal on a
10,000 lb winch?
Once you get it started and warmed up hook up a vacuum gauge to vacuum tree - hopefully you'll be getting 20 with a steady needle. For tires I'd watch craigslist. Best deal you'll find on 10k winch will be at Harbor Freight, you can find it for $299 then use a 20% off coupon. Its not the fastest winch out there but it works good.
That $400 HF sounds good but keep in mind thats only $100 away from a REAL WARN winch in used condition like a 8274. And I promise its 10X's the winch that the cheapo HF is even in used condition!!!!! Just wanted to throw that in there because I have seen to many cheap winches crap out on people (even me) to ever suggest one. As for tires, look for used ones everywere, I even bought a set 35'' AT in like new condition at a yard sale once for 50 buxs. If you dont get in a hury you can usaly find great deals on them. Good Luck.
Thats good advice yeah i definately would rather take my time and get it cheaper i priced new set of those 31 10.5 tires at wal mart and it came to $610.00
definately not goin that way any time soon.
I got the Bronco off the trailer and i know why the guy wanted to sell it so bad!!
When he replaced the solenoid for the starter he reverses the polarity on the whole electrical system.
The ground cabel was wired straight into the solenoid lol.
I grounded the engine and got everything right and aded some squirted some gas
into the throttle body and it came to life.
However, no fuel in the shcrader valve on the fuel line
So i know it runs and it idled for a while but
now i have pulled the tank cleaned up the sending unit
put a new pump in and also changed the in line filter
It looked like the po had dipped that sending unit in mud
so it was good i replaced it anyhow i now just have to wait for the float which was
mia onthe sending unit
Then I get to take a spin.
So a used warn would be a better choice? Where would you get one at is there a reconditioned site?
Replaced the in tank low pressure fuel pump and the fuel pump relay. No fuel pump
pressure. Next i will check and see if i am getting any power to the inline fuel pump
on the frame rail. If I dont have power I guess if could be the eec.
Well, i have added more parts than I originally though I would need but I think I am close to getting her running.
I checked the Inertia switch and it checked out however i still was getting no power to my pumps. I ran a hot line through a switch in the cab to the
inline pump and got both pumps up and running. The engine fires when gas is added via throttle body and it has good pressure in
the fuel line checked by schreder valve. That leaves only one culprit the EEC. I ordered one made by Borg Warner for $66.00 at advanced
the best deal any where. I think that should be the end of my engine problems and I think i will be able to take off the temporary hot that i spliced into the inline pump
Does anyone know if a bad eec will affect the power running to the fuel pumps?
Just got the new eec today put it on and i could tell that the injectors were at least pulsing alittl enow.
Does anyone know if you have to get th eec flashed for an 87 5.0?
Could it possibgly be since the polarity on the whole system was backwards for a while could my ecu be fried along with my map
senson or could the injectors be fused shut? Would this be the time i reach for the razor, four barrel, and intake lol?
I would keep the injection if you can, Yeah a 4 barrel will make things easier but the efi is a much better system all around. The reverse polarity seems very suspect to me, if you can, get the ecu tested. Its probably the issue. Good luck and welcome to the BOA (bronco owners anonymous). It will be fun and well worth it in the end.
I know now what is wrong I pulled the ecc today and it smells burnt bad.
Tomorrow I will go to the junkyard or order a new one.
Symptoms-Will not crank, good fuel pressure, goods spark=bad eec and ecu if the fuel pump is energizing.
