What is this "3G" alternator mod?

Its simply a better alternator. It provides more amps for charging your battery and running your electronics.

1991 Bronco w/ 5.0L V8, Auto w/ E40D trans, factory spare tire rack, factory limited slip diff, dual batteries, custom air intake, 8K lb. winch, tactical seat covers, drop down TV w/ CD/DVD player, 31's on stock suspension, roof baskets, new injectors, rear bumper w/ tire rack, 33" Goodyear Wranglers, 2" suspension lift.

To Do List: paint,

Do you have a suggestion as to which "3g" alty is best for a '90 application? And by you, I mean anybody.

It all depends on what you'll be doing with your build and what your power needs are. For me, I'm adding an auxiliary battery for a winch install latter on this summer. Since I'll be charging two batteries and running a winch, I'm going with a 150 amp 3G alternator.

But basically, the more electrical power you'll be using, the more amps you'll need from your alternator. Keep in mind, not all 3G alts are alike. You'll want to do some research before you sink any money into buying one. You may not even need one.

Work work work.

Fought with my new bypass hose. Got it on. Re-tightened everything. Filled 'er back up with coolant. Reads normal immegitchly(immediately) and blows hot n cold like a dream. I'm sure I needa recharge my AC, oh well. No more leaky leaky.
Took pictures of the side step project and of course of my pretty new water hookups. I'll try to upload them tonight, if I'm allowed; that is if I can post pictures or if I need some special access. Cheers!
Oh, and I took pictures last night of my lights.Theyr'e not as bright as the blue light special dude but still cool.I'll try to upload this new content all at the same time. Thanks for your interest so far.

My gauge always seems to read high already. But, wouldn't that allow me to use a larger battery as well. Since the truck is California acclimated it doesn't like super cold or hot temperatures and the battery takes the piss when it isn't sunny and Cali out. Thoughts sir?

The stock gauge isn't exactly reliable or accurate. What I would suggest is take your current alt to autozone and get it tested. They should be able to tell you how many amps its putting out. Should be around 75 if its stock. You should also get your battery tested while you're there. If you're battery isn't being reliable, it could be either a damaged cell in the battery, or the alt isn't putting out the amps you need.

Battery is new, but, from AZ. Also, I have a replacement from smothers, Interstate from there, I could just take the alty and battery to them and use the "store credit on the battery to replace something else as I'm pretty sure I got the alternator there when I started restoring this machine.

So alt and battery are both new? I've gotten bad alts before, so go ahead and get it tested. But if neither the battery or the alt are the problem, it could be your starter or the starter motor. In fact, go ahead and take the starter in with the alt and get it tested as well.

This is what we call "diagnosing the problem". You'll have to check over every part of the starting system before you're done. Its all part of the fun of building up your bronco. Wait till you get into the mods you want to do. Even more gremlins then.

So far, so good, I've tested all of the stuff before, but it's all taken a beating since installed. I think I'm just going to replace it since I just need to find all the receipts. Thank you.

And thank you for your service.

Here is a 3G thread I posted a while back, If you search you will find several more that will provide you with the wiring diagrams, alternator potential donors, clocking the alternator for connector clearance etc..... In fact you will find the threads I used to help me.

3G alt upgrade for dummies (Like Me)

My set-up is still working like a champ! It is an awesome upgrade.

Pulled the trigger on a set of Rockford Fosgate 12's in a box. At some point I'll be tearing the box apart to make a new one that'll sit between the wheel wells, until then... ..I needa get an amp and wiring and prollyoughtabetter upgrade to a higher output alternator. LMC has a direct fit OEM upgrade available for pennies on the dollar. If you don't already have a catalog from LMC Truck, get one.
Oh yeah, almost forgot. I took out the cargo bed surface. It's hella heavy. Seems like I have more clearance now. I'll have to refab it with more lightweight material.

New wipers today. New wiper motor last night. New switch and governor on their way. Re-routed vacuum lines and washer tube while I was in there last night. So much cleaner now. Oh, and I tested a worklight a vendor is trying to get me to stock at the dealership.
