Long story short my trucks been sitting for about a year due to some issues. Got to chatting with my buddy (mistake number 1) and he mentioned he was itching to start a project. I wanted to originally put a 6bt into this truck, but I couldn't find one locally that wasn't beyond expensive. So I decided on a 7.3 with an E4OD out of a 1996 F350.
Tomorrow the truck is getting towed to his property. He's got an excavator and a tractor. Then off to pick up the donor truck. Should be able to sell off parts for more than what I paid for it.
The to do list:
Tomorrow (6/8)
Pick up a receiver hitch and 2 inch ball for the Excursion
Grab tow dolly
Bring Bronc to Chris's
Grab donor vehicle
Short list, but we need to drive about 5 hours to move everything around.
(6/9)
Pull front clip
Pull 351w and C6
Clean and prep frame
Pull 7.3 and E40D from donor
That's about it for this week.
What will need to be done after:
Bolt in 7.3 motor mounts
Modify/repair core support
Build battery cables
Swap F350 dash in
Modify wiring harness
Modify fuel lines
Drain gas tank
Modify filler neck
Attach brake booster
That's about it. Easy enough. We will be making YouTube videos on our progress as well as updating this thread.
Swapping an OBS dash into an earlier model is a pain in the rear. Have you researched that part yet? Few threads here about it along with a bevvy of diesel swap threads.
I'd like to put a 7.3 idi/zf5 in my 85, but that'll be down the road.
Going out of state for a week then out of the country for another few weeks. Donor truck fell through so we're just trying to get everything ready for a 7.3 now. Few other trucks in mind, gotta beat them down a bit though.
As an Excursion and Bronco guy I'm totally happy to find another dual Ford guy on here with the same taste in his SUVs. Can't wait to see this awesome Bronco when you get it done.
Got the trans and t case out today, as well as got my fuel situation all done.
Now, the trans has got some bubble gum welds on it...looks like it got smacked on a rock or something at one point. Doesn't leak and is towards the end of the pan.
Now, I have a predicament.
Option 1: Find an NV4500 and swap it in. Thoughts are it should be easy enough to do since its all dodge shit, but people want too much for them here. As in more than what I can get a rebuilt one for online. Then I have to deal with the clutch and putting a third pedal in.
Option 2: Buy local PSD ZF5. Same as above, clutch and 3rd pedal install. BUT, this one is ford and I'll just graft all the PSD shit into my truck instead.
Option 3: Find NP241 with a passenger side drop and swap that in, make some shift linkage, and call it good. Then I'm stuck with a shitty transfer case and an arguably shitty transmission.
Option 4: Get the kit from advanced adapters for 500 bucks and use the 208 out of the bronco.
Got the rear main done, the KDP done, and painted the timing gear cover jobbie blue. Motor mounts are in tomorrow but I got a bachelor's party to go to. Then I'm working 3 weeks straight. I'll try and get some done here and there but its pretty slim.
No particular order but we got the clutch pedal assy all done up today as well as filled in the holes on the firewall.
That picture of the linkage wasn't final. I wound up using a spacer and modified a bolt and blah blah blah its all good now.
I pulled apart the 208 and 241 to see if I could swap the input shafts. No, you cant. So **** me. Gonna see if I can TIG ninja the awesome cast aluminium case back together where it broke. Then pull the output shaft out and chuck it up in a lathe and shorten it. I should be able to use the 208 output seal jobbie on the 241 and have a fixed yolk for my cardan joint.
Got my adapter plate in as well as my hydroboost and flywheel.
Rain gutters are rotted out, again. Go figure. Gonna cut them off and weld it up. Need to rip more into the interior and see how badly damaged everything is. Also need to create some sort of stress reliever/plate so I don't get cracks again.
Stuck in North Dakota for the week but I should get the trans in at least by next tuesday.
