Lifted Fords long awaited build. 96 with 460 and tons

So here it is..... MAF obII 460 swap and D60 and 10.25 swap. The SAS started in Oct 2015 and 460 swap was started in Feb 2016.

The back story, I picked the bronco up from gadawgz71 in Aug 2013 with just over 128k on it, a 6" ttb lift and 35 ats, but it was some kids off road toy before gadawgz71 picked it up. I spent a week cleaning and pressure washing and it still wasn't clean.

I then add some 37" claws.

I also added a e303 cam and changed the exhaust up some.

Then the ice storm of 2014 came. I drove it to work and it was frozen in place for 3 days. Had over an inch of ice on it. I work for a power company and didn't go home for 4 days anyway but my extra clothes were in there.

I pretty much just drove it and enjoyed having a running and driving bronco. I took it out a few times on some dirt roads but that's about it for off-roading.

More to come

Then in Oct of 2015 I decided to use the parts I've been gathering and saving for the last 4-5 years.

The plan was swap in my Dana 60 that was rebuild. It had Detroit locker, 4.88s, stock axles for now, Yukon flat flange, new king pins and bearings and seals, ruff stuff diff cover, sky manufacturing high steer arm, ruffstuff 7/8s heim steering with 1.5 dom, PSC hydro assist, ruffstuff track bar mount, new rotors and wheel studs, and warn hubs.

In this pic you can see I had to modify the cover to clear my steering and the ram mount.

The rear is a 10.25 with a Detroit locker, 4.88s, new bearings and seals, ruffstuff diff cover, and ruffstuff disk brake conversion.

Both axles geared by a friend.

The suspension will be James Duff arms, with cage weld on mounts, home made lower coil mounts, 78-79 deaver 6" coils and 78-79 6" deaver leafs, ruffstuff 3/8" thick U-bolt plates, fox shocks.

I bought a lot of it while doing gadawgz71 swap and made notes on what worked. I tried to be different on some stuff but let's face it. Our broncos are built very similar and they perform very good.

Bronco is lookin good

The only thing that caught me off guard, was the braided brakelines being zip tied to the front axle. That wouldn't last an hour off road up here in the coal region.

Motor looks good. Full build? Stock rebuild??

Then this showed up! Hefty bumper

I also added 2" wheel spacers in the rear to match the front axle width.

All done around Dec 2015. It took a little bit to get done but pretty much did it by myself on weekends, when I wasn't working.

But now I was having trans issues. They have been coming and going but instead of putting money in a small block set up, it was time for a big block swap. It's time to start ordering parts I don't have yet. BTW it only has 130k on it now.

The main decision I had was rebuild the 460 I have or order a short block or order a long block. I priced it out every way and it was cheaper and faster to go long block and the long block comes with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty. So I ordered it.

A week later this comes in

And this

And this

New radiator and fans

This also showed up. Hefty front bumper

They were a temp fix but I still haven't gone back and welded the tabs I have for it yet. I haven't wheeled it much yet so not a issue.

Getting the small block ready to pull. I also decided to pull the front clip. It will make it a lot easier in the long run.

So much more room to work now. But getting it off by yourself is a challenge.

Gadawgz71 came over and helped me move my bronco down the road to my in laws, where the new 460 was and to help me swap the motors.

Transfer case out

And it's on its way out

Old e4od out, still had to pull my pan off it and the valve body out.

New motor finding its new home

It's in

So now I have decided to try and make bronco super celebration, that's a month away! I better get busy.

Doug Thorley Headers going on

Remote mount oil filter

After a few phone calls I found the rare factory 460 MAF intake tubes in a junkyard in CA. I already had the computer and the air box and meter.

Trying to figure out the exhaust. I bought a universal summit racing kit.

I also added a heat blanket for the starter and heat sleeve for the starter wire.

And 0/1 grounds

Had to add the crank trigger tone ring also

Built a new cross member out of 1.5" .250 wall dom and some 1/4" plate.

I don't seem to have any pics but the front clip is back on now and finishing the plumbing of everything. I pulled all the abs stuff and put a F-350 booster and master cylinder on. Installed the PSC reservoir.

Then I had to do this

I went to fire her up and she hit for a second but something went pop. Tried again and nothing and something sounded off. Pulled the cap and the rotor wasn't turning. I then pulled the distributor and the cam wasn't turning. Not good! I'm leaving for super celebration next week.

Cam pin broke off

The cam seized up in the motor. I had to use a pry bar to get it out. Yes I used comp cam lube when installing it and primed the motor before starting.

No pics but I installed the cam that came with the long block and the turned smooth as butter. So I put it back together with that cam and took the comp cam back to summit. I also did some searching on line and found that a lot of guys were getting bad cams from comp at that time. My cam looked perfect and had no scarring on it. Summit first said you didn't buy comp break in oil so your out of luck sorry. I said yes I did, look at my order history. I forgot it the day I ordered the cam and ordered it the next day. He said ok I see that now but he was very hesitant. In the end they warrantied it out for a new one but it was backordered for 2 months.
