49 state = egr valve, retarded cam timing, various vacuum systems.... No Catalyst or smog pump.

I dunno about California, I don't live there nor do I plan to. I think the 78 Cali editions had catalysts and smog pumps.

In Texas, the '78 is exempt from emissions tests

78 was the last year of non emisions on broncos and pickups, but yes they still have the retarded cam timing like, think they actually started that in about 72 or so.

I live in massachusetts and I had an inspection station tell me that my truck was supposed to have cat converters. Even though they do not do a smog on the truck he was going to flunk it on a visual inspection basis. I drove away before he got started and found a different station and got a sticker. Just for future information did the 78 Bronco have cat converters on them from the factory?

I know 79 was the 1st year for cats in the F-series. I thought I had heard the 78 Bronco's came with cat's because of there lighter GVW.

78 - only Cali. Boncos had Cats.
79 & up - All Boncos have cats. I'm told Canadian Broncos did not get Cats until sometime in the 80's.

Look at the gas filler neck. If it has a small hole in it like new cars then it is a Ca model and had cats. If it has the large hole in it was designed full regular leaded gas with no emissions.

If it has the stock sticker under the hood it will say Non-Catalyst.

My 78 has the Non-cat sticker.....but it also has the small hole in the filler neck so I don't know how accurate looking at the filler neck would be.

From ProjectBronco.com:
"The 1979 Bronco was basically a direct carry over from the 1978 models. The big difference for the 1979 model year was a full array of emissions equipment, including smog pumps and catalytic converters, that were now standard on all 1/2 ton trucks. Probably the most amazing accomplishment for the '79 Bronco was that Ford managed to satisfy the EPA emissions requirements with very little, if any, loss of performance over the previous model year."

Don't know how accurate that is... but its something.

When performance is pathetic and anemic like a 150 hp 400cid engine, then a small loss from pathetic is still pathetic in any book. Factory power sucked sooooo bad in the 1970's

More of just making sure the visual things are good....Get valve covers with stickers that say non cat.............Also make sure your guage cluster inside doesnt read unleaded fuel under the gas guage......Another is when you open the gas door shouldnt read unleaded....not on the cap not on the door.....
