Water pump bolts - do any need sealant?

Do any of the water pump bolts need sealant on them? As in do any go into water passages like a 302?

It's a 351M in my 79.

I think just one of the timing cover bolts needed it, but not the water pump. That was on the 460 though, so I can't say for sure.

I just ran a small bead of permatex around each hole when I put mine on. sealed up and never leaked.

Same here. A thin bead around all the bolt holes. I think I did this on both sides of the water pump gasket.

Thanks everybody.

I did the same. Just around the holes, but just wanted to make sure since two of the long bolts I took out appeared to have sealant on the threads. They could have just picked some up when they were put in last time.

No fullsize right now, but acquired an uncut I could not resist!

OK, yeah I put sealant on the gaskets around the holes, but not thread sealant. I thought he was asking about thread sealant for where bolts go into the coolant passages and rust out. My bad.

Just for clarity everybody, I was curious if any of the bolts went into the cooling passages like on a 302. There is a tendency for for water to seep around the threads of the if you don't use pipe sealant or RTV on those bolts.

No fullsize right now, but acquired an uncut I could not resist!

Aha! I was right. You should be able to figure out which ones may hit coolant by just looking behind the pump as you slide the bolts through. I could on the 460, but I don't know about yours.

I can confirm I have no leaks and didn't put sealant on the bolts.

No fullsize right now, but acquired an uncut I could not resist!
