Steering Box Options

Most of us know the narrow window of steering gearbox options for 78-79 Broncos. Today I was looking into something and found a rebuilder that offers 4 different steering boxes.

Lares Corporation offers:
Lares Corporation

1087 Manual Steering

1088 PWR Steering

1089 PWR Steering Quick Ratio if this is true might be a good option for those who use their Bronco on the street more than on the trail.

1090 PWR Steering Reverse Rotation This would make a good gift to someone you hate that has a Bronco.

I have an email into them asking about the difference in steering ratio.

Rock Auto carries all four boxes.

I received an email response this morning from Lares Corp. Pleased to see an answer so quick from them.

Here is the the answer to the different steering ratios:

Quote:
Thank you for contacting us. The difference between the 1088 and 1089 ratio is the turns lock to lock.

1088 – 4 turns lock to lock. (16:1 ratio)

1089 – 3.5 turns lock to lock. (14:1 ratio)

If you have any further questions, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Brita Lee
1/2 turn may not sound like a lot of difference, but if you look at the ratio, the change is obvious. A big benefit for city driving and for the gofast guys.

GOOD FIND. I would of bought one of those instead of a Red Head just for the ratio change, as it would be better for the way I drive in the Dunes.

I was thinking it might be a good option for you dune guys.

I am waiting on a reply from Red Head now about either converting our boxes to quick ratio during rebuild or taking one of the Lares boxes and going back thru it. Keeping the quick ratio. That last option would be rather expensive. A Lares box is $155 plus RedHead $386. Hoping RedHead can give us the quick steer option.

FANTASTIC NEWS!

Got a very quick reply from Red Head. This is an option for us! I am including the whole response with details.

Quote:
Hello,
Thank you for your inquiry. We do offer this steering gear with both ratios. Our website is under construction and I don't believe this unit is on it. We use the part number 2753F for the quicker ratio. It runs $406 with a $350 core charge.
If you would like to skip the core charge you may send yours in to be rebuilt. We can change the ratio to the quick ratio upon request. If this is the route you decide to go please just fill out the information below and include it with the package. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions.

R & R Information
Please send this form with your gearbox to:

The old outfit I worked for sold alot of Lares steering components, I never heard of a single one having issues or needing to be swapped out. Luckly my 78's box is still tight and dry, but having a quicker ratio sounds nice

I just went to the Redhead site to see if I missed this option when I ordered mine in November '16. Can't find the quick ratio option. Gotta say I'm kind of pissed that when I called and ordered this thing via phone that they didn't mention this to me. I would have opted for it.

Oh well, I'm extra sensitive because I, just yesterday, finished fixing the leaking hoses from the RedHead install and did my first drive since like October '16. I also did a WH steering shaft, tie rods, WH adjustable drag link and still need to do the lower steering column bearing. So.....this steering isn't being touched again for many many years!!!! What a PITA! Oh, and thanks for sharing the info on this! Great to have options for our 78-79's

Damn. Wish I'd have known about that before I sandwiched the redhead on my '73 F250.
Quicker steer would have been awesome to have on the Plow Beast.
