What are some of your more favorite combinations that have worked out the best?

I like the Comp cams 255 DEH or the 265 DEH. I am running the 265 DEH in my 79. To change cams you will need new valve springs and retainers. The exhaust valves will most likely have rotateing retainers and will cause spring bind.

Intake I used the Edelbrock Performer 400 because it is a non EGR intake.


Carb depends on the build but a good 600 cfm carb is all you need for it.


To help this motor out I would put a good true roller 3 key way timeing chain. These motors have 4* cam retard from factory for emmissions and that is a powere killer.

Ditto what 79 said on the cam and intake, I chose to try the Edelbrock carb on the 400 in the Bronco. It is a very responsive carb.

I am also running full MSD ignition on both of the trucks and so far have no complaints.

I have kinda quit with the Cam upgrades and just run a RV type cam. But ya performer 400 intake and Edelbrock 750 carb is what i use with great success, couple of my buddies have been using 2-3" 4 hole carb spacers with some results as well.

400 engine, edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock 750 carb, 39.5x15x15 super swamper TSL, Ford 10.25 Sterling Rear Welded, Dana 60 Front, 5.13 gears, Sky Shacle Flip, Front Leaf, 9" of total lift

I'm running the Edlebrock "Performer-Plus" cam (#2172) and Edlebrock intake with the stock Ford 2150 2Bbl carb. Runs great, decent gas mileage, no problems off road with the card, had the truck up to 8,000+ ft. with no missing or vapor lock.

3G Alt. Upgrade, Duel Batteries, 351M bored .030 over with Edlebrock cam and intake, C-6 w/AO4D internals, 3" lift w/RS 9000, 33x12.50 MTR's, Saginaw PS Pump Conversion, On Board Air, Detroit Locker, Hydro Boost Brake System, Altimeter from a CH-46D, Map Light from a MH-53E.

U. S. Government - Wasting paper and keeping Lumber Jacks gainfully employed since 1776.

The bko has a cam specs on it are Valve lift 509 running duration in. 262 ex 270. gross cam lift 295 Duration at .050 intake 214 exhaust 222 lobe centers 112. It's an Engle cam grind number ru-101/104 H. what kinda cam is it, mild, stock what? What would work good with this cam, same thing?

I just bought an SP2P off ebay for a grand total of $75. All the research I did said they were ok for the most part. Lots of low end torque...they claimed better mileage but I really doubt it with these motors.

Spec's on the Edlebrock 2172 cam are as follows:
Duration: (advertised) 282* intake, 292* exhaust
Duration: (@.050) 204* intake, 214* exhaust
Lift @ cam: .280 intake, .295 exhaust
Lift @ valve: .484 intake, .510 exhaust
Timing @ .050: intake open @ 5* ATDC, close @ 29* ABDC
Exhaust open @ 44* BBDC, close @ 10* BTDC
Centerlines: Lobe seps. 112*, intake ctrline 107*

I have good low end torque, no problems pulling a load on long hills, will cruise about 70-75 MPH. As for the intake, I'm happy with mine, P/N by the way is 3771. I drive my truck to and from work (80 miles) every day. Just remember to not use the one piece metal intake gasket with an aluminium intake manifold, you should use a paper gasket as the expansion rates (metal/aluminium) are differant.

I have the Summit cam with the same specs as the Edelbrock cam but I haven't run it in the new motor. I ran the edelbrock cam in my F150 before I went to the Comp cam and I like the Comp cam better.


The Summit cam and lifters is $82 and here is the P/N look it up same specs as the Edelbrock.

SUM-K5200

Lunati makes a good cam to but I would stay with the split profile.

That article said if you can't locate a 400, get a 351M and 400 crank and rods will drop right in. That's true but 351M/400 rods are the same. I'm sure every 78-79 Bronco enthusiast knows it's the crank and pistons that are the differences.

1996 F-150, 300 I6 H.O., all stock
Used to have a 79 Bronco...
