Question AOD to C6 Swap

Hi,

I own a 1989 Bronco XLT, 302 with a really annoying AOD transmission. I have rebuild this tranny twice now and it has blew twice . So i gave up..

My question is, How hard will it be to put a C6 in replace of the AOD?

Will i need to get a C6 from another 4x4 or can i get one from a car?

You are gonna need the 4x one. That I know fo sho. Beond that I wouldnt think it would be that complicated. Get the X-member, drivelines, and transfer case linkage from the donor bronc and you should be good to go.

If I am wrong feel free to flame me, as I am drunk and am willing to argue right now.......

At least my daily driver is a ford now.

Dont quote me on this, but im pretty sure the AOD is longer.
That would mean youre gonna have to look into either getting drive shafts from a bronco that had a C6 from the factory, or getting yours shortened/lengthened to fit.

the AOD is only 1/2" longer, so no changes would need to be made. In addition to swapping in the C6, don't forget to get a new/rebuilt torque converter too. Also, you can get a C6 that was behind a 300, 302, or 351W - nothing else will work.

No, the C6 is only 1/2" shorter, your slip joints in the drivelines will be able to deal with that just fine. I can't recall right now, but you might want to plan on a possibility on moving the trans mount

Trans mount is fine where it is. Ford designed the actual tranny mount locations on the t-case adapters on all their trannies to accomodate the differences in transmission lengths.

If the slip joint can handle that, then that means i may have to move the tcase?? The adpter between the Transmission and tcase is solid

The 4x4 C6 you get has to have the t-case adapter on it. The t-case adapter is the tranny mount too. The t-case is bolted to the adapter which is bolted to the transmission, you can't "move it". You're making this more complicated than it should be.

Drain transmission and transfercase, disconnect driveshafts, all shift linkages, unbolt the transfer case, support the engine, unbolt the transmission from the crossmember and engine. Bolt C6 on engine and crossmember, bolt transfer case on, hook up C6 and t-case shift linkages, re-do the transmission cooling lines and have a driveline shop modify the driveshafts if needed. The swap is a 1-day project with the exception of the driveshafts if you need to drop them off at a driveline shop.

damn dusty ya made it sound simple but i hate trannies so..



darrellru... how in the hell did ya blow the tranny twice it took me to sink mine to get it to go out and ihave had no probs with mine since

tuff country 4" suspension lift
3 in PA body lift

Thanks Dusty.. Bought the C6 about an Hour ago. I start on it tomorrow... Will let you know the outcome...


Well, i don't really know how i blew it... I have first, second and reverse but no 3rd or overdrive... Somone told me i could of over heated the 3rd gear drum and blew the seals in that drum. It will not shift into 3rd at all.. it stays in 2nd...

I know all this because my friend Dave burnt up three AOD's in the mud before he eventually swapped over to a C6 with my help. All the different combinations of engines/auto trannies excluding diesels and the E4OD are direct bolt-ins as they all use the same crossmember locations. By combos, I mean 300/c6, 300/AOD, 302/C6, 302/AOD, 351w/C6, 351w/AOD, 460/C6. Myself, I have done the following swaps- 302/AOD to 460/C6 and 300/C6 to 302/C6 and I have not moved any crossmembers for either swap.

Hey All,

Thanks for all your help... i bought a C6 put it in.. it fit just fine.. Went out on a test run and snaped a U-joint, No problem... Replaced that and went back out and snaped the chain in the t-case ( winter months in Buffalo NY) so i replaced the T-Case chain and now i have no drive nor reverse? Did i blow yet another tranny?????

You sure the t-case isn't in neutral or did you swap the shift linkage like I said? I'm thinking your shifter is in drive but the transmission is really in neutral. The shift linkage is slightly different between the AOD and C6 and will throw the shift indicator off.

oddball, bassackwards question: would it be that hard to go the other way? C6 to AOD for "economy"? I'm looking at going from a 302 to a M series. My 2nd Q: Are there AOD's for 460's? (modifieds use 385 series bellhousing pattern)

I'll worry about the EFI mod later

Truck AOD's only come in the small block pattern- 300, 302, 351W.

Whoa Dammit,

Someone makes adapters for some of the FE Ford engines, specifically the 360. You would want one hell of a built tranny to go behind a 460, Alto Red Eagle clutch packs, mechanical diode for 2nd/reverse, kevlar band, vasco input shaft, steel drums, a very large tranny cooler and a transgo shift kit. Thats what I am doing to mine and I don't plan to go bigger than a 351W. What I'm saying is, even if I could find an adapter for a 460/AOD setup, I wouldn't do it.
