I put a brand new tailgate shell on last summer (all by myself) and I totally disagree with removing the hinges from the body. I just slacked all 6 bolts that go into the bottom of the tailgate first as well as slacking off the torsion bar retaining bolts on the body too.

Next get the wiring disconnected and slack the retaining cables almost off. Then all you do is put some foam rubber or bunched up blankets between the bumper and gate and take out the 6 gate bolts, undo the cable bolts and the torsion bar will usually slide out as you lift the gate off the bumper.

Do you really want your fingers between the gate trying to put the bolts back into the body with your friend wheezing away with the weight of the gate ? My way you just sit the weight of the gate onto the hinges, start the cable bolts in to take the rest of the weight and slip the 6 bolts in at your leisure.

Worked for me
