OK to remove smog pump?

My smog/air pump on my '87 has started getting very noisy, I believe a bearing is giving up internally. The truck runs fine and is old enough to no longer require emmisions testing. My question is, could I remove the pump without effecting driveability?

I have the same truck as yours. I 'rebuilt' my smog pump cause it was getting noisy. A month later it froze up-----very badly. Luckily I had another belt with me that fit when I by-passed the pump pulley. Drove it like that for about 3 week and noticed a difference for the worse in fuel and performance. Bought a used one at PYP for $15.00 and all is well again.......................

I did this on my '89 when the smog pump froze up

and used that belt, but it was too long. you need a 060825 sized belt
AND I routed the belt a different way as well ( see, see?)

for everyone else, its a temp fix for me, cuz I need the smog crap to appease the Smog Nazi's here in CA.

I've also been told that if you run with out the smog pump on the stock Cat, it will clog it

I removed my smog pump and it didn't effect driveability or mileage. I had to use a 2" shorter belt due to the pump being removed and my 3g alternator.

I removed my pump and all attaching equipment when mine gave way, no effect in mileage, a little performance increase since it was actually having decent exhaust flow again.. oh and the backfire was gone... go figure

You should route that belt from the alt. around the crank & then back up to the water pump. There belt is too far around the alt.

My old smog pump blew up on me. After taking it apart, I noticed that the carbon fiber plates inside were broken up. I went to the JY and pulled one for $20.00, brought it home, and it was slow to spin. So I sprayed inside the holes with liquid wrench penetrating oil and got it freed up after letting all of the gunk run out of it several times. Now when I drive it, the smog pump makes noise like a bearing is going to seize. Is the noise normal for some smog pumps? I am pissed because the 30 day JY warranty has passed . I keep wanting to put oil, or grease in there to shut up the pump. The search function had 6 posts, and I read all of them.

Should your radiator hose be doing that?? hahaha
are these pumps always choppy to spin by hand? Mine doesnt free wheel for more than a quarter turn or so

steve 83 did a write up on cleaning out a seized pump I followed. It freed mine so it spun alot more than that, but the bearing noise on mine is scaring me.

I bought one from Autozone. Can't remember how much but it wasn't bad. I did a non-illustrated write up on how i changed mine out.

You guys realize that 96's had no smog pump, so you could just get a smog pump delete pulley off of a 96 and keep the stock sized belt?

just a thought....

I don't know scratch about a 96'. But now that you mentioned it, if I ever need to upgrade my motor, I might make it a 96'.

it cheaper to by a shorter belt than a buying a pump plus mines making noise and we don't need it in this state...Thanks Mr7....

I've got my old smog pump here if anybody local wants to try to repair the bearing noise in it. It works, but I don't know how long it will work because it makes noise.

2" shorter belt I scourced from NAPA. The actual belt length I used is 97 5/8" instead of the factory 99 5/8". I chose the delete pulley to keep the correct belt travel/angle and have had no problems with it thus far. Hope this helps.

There are other threads on this subject. Read them, check State and U.S. laws, and whatever you do, keep all emissions parts you remove stored away somewhere in case laws change or you wanna sell your rig. Even the smog pump can be reused as a core for a new one if ya ever wanna go back with it.

I was hoping to roll to the junk yard and grab a delete pulley from a 96 but there appears to be conflicting data.

Would Cali Broncos still have a smog pump? Or maybe 5.0 were the only ones to have them, anyone?
