Question E4OD to E4OD compatibility questions

I've been searching on here, but have not come up with a definitive thread or answers I am seeking...

Is there an online list or reference as to which E4OD's are compatible between the 1991-1996 Bronco's? I'm not interested in E4OD's from the F-Series trucks, specifically and only Broncos.

Was there any major differences and/or changes to either the transmission itself, the transmission's electronics OR the transmission ECU from 91-96?

For instance, will an E4OD from a 91 Bronco be a plug-n-play into a 93 Bronco w/ E4OD?

I've read that the MLPS sensor had some minor changes (more so just connector/wiring changes). I'm assuming this change has no bearing or effect on my questions (not unless someone wires it up wrong... LOL).

What about the E4OD trans linkage, did this change from 91-96, and if so, how?

How about differences between engines - meaning, is the 5.0 E4OD the same as the 5.8 E4OD?

ya know, those are all good questions. Here is my answer based on opinion, not fact:

The E4OD meant for a smallblock v8 is the same, period. over the years there were "upgrades", but to my knowledge any of the years are totally interchangeable. many of the changes were either "programming" or internal "part" but to my knowledge it does not affect in any way being able to pull one from one model year and replace with a different year. From my vantage I'd never buy an older E4OD though since I'm starting from the '95 model year. There were also 2wd and 4x4 versions so I'm not sure if you're interested in going there? Only difference with those might just be the tailhousing and output shaft for attachment to the Tcase, dunno?

I know there are 3 different casting numbers. I know that if you want to put a 95/96 E4OD into something older you need to remove your old solenoid and put in on the newer tranny so that you don't have to change connectors. The connectors were changed from 93-95. Thats about where my knowledge stops.

the connectors were changed starting in 95 for both the mlp senser and the solenoid pack. other than that they are interchangeable. the internals were changed in 95 for the better but i dont have that kind of time right now....lol.....

The shift shaft and shift linkage changed in '92 with the body style change (and steering column change). The 90-91 E4OD had mechanical push rod linkage and then '92 and up has a shift cable. When I swapped in my E4OD to replace my C6 I used a '95 transmission. I had to change the shift shaft on the tranny and I had to fab up linkage (pushrod)....

good info!!! what about tail housings...where the xfer case bolts to....did they ever change throught the years? they are the same as the f-series correct?

My 92 e40d has 8 wires running to it, a 94 e40d I took a buncha parts from had 9 wires going to different trans solenoids/sensors than my 92. Couldn't get it to shift right...

Thats what FSB is all about. Someone has been there, done that or swapped it in/out..

tail housings never changed for the 4x4s.... yes they are the same as the F-series...

thats because the pinouts changed. You had to change the wires around in the plug. Nothing was added just changed locations of a some stuff...

I replaced my E4OD in my 92 Bronco with a 351, with a E4OD out of a 93 Bronco with a 302. Everything bolted right up, all electrical plugs plugged right in. Transmission works great. So to answer the question, are the transmissions the same on both the 302 and 351? Yes they are.

nope the o/d planet was revised as well as the input shaft in 95 the solenoid connector was also changed but the solenoid body itself it identical......

Im looking at a tranny from a 91 F250 HD
How hard is it to change the linkage? Any special tool or rusty bolts that will break on me?

Also the trans is for 2wd, What needs to be done to make it work in my 4x4 Bronco?

92 Bronco, 351 Motor.
