Wiring harness

So thanks to the great members on this forum my transmission is all sorted out so next up lets see if you guys can help me with my wiring harness. I have a 89 bronco and I got a motor out of I believe a 91 bronco. So since im lazy and didnt notice a difference I left the 91 harness on when I installed the motor. Now onto my problems turns out the harness besides looking the same is different. The oil pressure gauge was pinned wrong so is the coolant temp sensor. Also after leaving the battery connected overnight the battery drained and the alternator doesn seem to charge properly. So my question is how different are the harnesses am I better off swapping a few wires or should I swap the entire harness? Also is my charging and dying battery issue connected to the harness or is it a failing alternator? Anyway any suggestions on what to do would be great. Thanks alot guys.

Are there any other differences between the harness? Might be easier to replace the sending units with ones made for that harness. I'm guessing here, but I'd believe the difference between the wiring is that one had the dash lights and the other has gauges.

Check the battery. What is it's voltage when truck is on? what is it off? Make sure the battery is fully charged then put a load tester on it to verify the battery is good. If all those test pass muster then you have a drain somewhere.

You could also just check for a battery drain by disconnecting the neg. terminal and getting a multi-meter set to milli amps. Put one lead to the battery and the other to the cable. WITH EVERYTHING IN THE TRUCK OFF!!! the amperage draw should be less than 0.9 If it's much more then there is something wrong.

The harness looks the same at first glance but upon closer inspection you can tell that theyre pinned a little differently how differently is what im looking to find out. Like the oil pressure sending unit is the same but they were pinned in completely different places. I am hoping I will just need to swap a few wires but thats what im not sure of. The battery is for sure a good battery its definitely a different issue. Thanks

Thanks seattle that is helpful but honestly has left me a little confused haha. What I meant when I said pinned wrong is that the wires dont seem to be in the same place that they were in my original wiring harness. A for instance would be my oil pressure sending unit wire was in the wrong spot. I dont recall the pins but lets say on the grey connector it was all the way to the right on the original connector now this new harness the oil pressure sending unit is all the way to the left.

From the charts you showed me it looks like all the pinning should be the same more or less plug and play. Now I am completely confused. In that chart I didnt see the coolant temp sensor which is also not working and the oil pressure sensor.

The Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) is on EEC Pin #7. Unless you are speaking of Temperature "Sender" and Oil Pressure "Switch" which are single wire and used for gauges only.

Yes i am talking about the harness that controls the gauge is different whatevrr that harness is called. The truck seems to run fine its just things like gauges and the battery dying issue which i dont know if thats a wiring issue or alt.

I think the OP is talking about the harness that has 4 connectors on the fenderwell, not the ECM harness itself.

inteva6184, If those 4 connectors are not pinned right, just look at what the plug into for the correct pinning\arrangement. The colors of the wires don't change. Basically, make sure that one color wire(on the engine harness) connects to the same color on the other side of the connector you plug it into.

Correct I am talking about the 4 connectors. I wish it was as easy as matching colors but from what I can tell (I only was able to look at it at night) none of the wires really match up. Comparing the original harness connected to the motor to this new harness the colors are totally different and dont come close to matching. I am thinking im going to have to swap harnesses and it looks like a complete pain. I wish I knew this when it was on the engine stand ha.

Oh if you have your old harness just throw it back on. They aren't hard to swap in.

Well I swapped my harness and gauges are back woohoo. Was still charging funny so I swapped the alternator harness and now that works as well. Its actually functioning like a vehicle should haha. Thanks
