got a bit sidetracked from this project, but I'm starting in again on this as along with the head gasket swap I'm fixing the broken transmission. Picked up a nice replacement during a recent trip to Utah.

Anything I should do while the head is off? as far as I'm close and it would be dumb not to change while I'm in there at this time?

update to this project. Got the head off and on the floor of the garage....easy to see the #3/4 head gasket issue. Only about a 1/2" gap. Got many stuck bolts to remove. Need to get a replacement alternator pivot bolt. the head of it is sooo bad I have to weld a nut to the top of it so I can remove it. have it hit with PB Blaster too. Thank God I didn't need to pull the alt. before now. It is really tough to get that bracket off the motor with that still in the way.

Taking the head to the machine shop to have it looked over and maybe have the valves lapped just in case. Probably will replace O-rings on the injectors since it is apart and accessible.
Did I mention the head is heavy? I'm not 20 anymore...but dayum..left the lower intake and exhaust manifolds on as a place to ratchet strap that bugger out of the engine bay.

Next up is to swap the sag bracket and remove transmission for replacement.

pulling the lower intake discovered two hold down tabs on cly 6 to be broken. Going to see if I can get it welded reasonably. but I do have an out if that fails or is cost prohibitive.

well I got that intake welded up and it was only $50. I can get a photo later of it. the head is waiting to be picked up on Monday afternoon and while there I had a valve job done on it just because it was off and at the shop. There is time for motor mounts and other little junk to get done in the meantime waiting for its delivery.

cant wait to get it all done and have an almost new truck again.....I need my parts runner.

picked up the head at the shop. Know why the gasket failed...warped head. Valves were great, but still put in the new seals and lapped them. So I'm glad I didn't get impatient and throw it back together.
Will hope to have it running again soon now.
figured it was good to update for future reference.

Well this would be together if I'd quit having shit break. I have a new alt./air pump bracket on the way as removal of stuck bolt blew out the threaded hole. I hope this is some of the last stuff.
I am taking some off time to paint and clean up the engine while I'm not at it....

guess I'll also change out the freeze plugs as they are just right there and unobstructed and easy to change out. Not leaking yet, but they are 22 years old. Dumb idea? maybe.

Replaced the Busted motor mounts.....passenger side had no rubber left on it. drivers side rubber was there but still a 2 piece model. I have to still replace the transmission mount as its not right either. I swear the motor sits an inch and a half higher than it did before.

On a good note...I have located and tightened up a very loose front radiator core support mount and plugging away at mounting stuff up waiting for the replacement bracket to arrive.

and I still have the breakage bug....another broken tab on the lower intake. Found it while cleaning it up to paint. This time I'm JB Welding it.

Also tried to stop the side cover gasket oil leak. Figured its easier now than later.

since I'm dragging my feet to go to the garage tonight...I think I "may have" discovered a potential air leak that could possibly led to the high idle.

Never seen a Throttle body gasket look like this. Or any gasket look this buggered up.

Then there were some random photos from the repair and of repairs during the repairs...

Got some stuff delivered by Brown today ...so I might be driving this by next weekend or sooner.

Well I'm all back together and have a crank no start. Fuel pressure is low at 30psi and that is a maximum at crank. Started another thread for pointers or confirmation of thought...here.... well here actually

side cover gasket replaced...and painted since I wasn't at it and it was clear.

did the injectors...cleaned and resealed. not overly difficult or time consuming.

Yeah....painted most of the engine stuff while I was in there. Looks better, even if it doesn't run. Complete except for the hood install.

Just figured to update the photos to this thread because I had them.

FAWK! Damn pump does not work. You sorta have a reasonable expectation of a new pump to work atleast for a few minutes anyway.
Just sucks that I have to drop the tank, pull the hitch and all that crap again. Would pull the bed, but its snowing and I have no where to put the junk in the back. It should go faster the 2nd time right?

OK....I have great fuel pressure now 53-ish....but still don't start. Plenty of crank....until battery drains down (on charger now). Will recheck spark...positive on firing order as I checked for the forty second millionth time.... Vacuum lines are correct and not leaking to the best of my ability to check while not running.

F

U

C

......what now. I know its gotta be simple but missing it.
All I want it to get this out of the garage for a spin around the block. It ran piss poor when it came to the garage....now with it in new shape, it wont fire up.

misplaced the Noid light....double checked for any codes (but Having had the battery disconnected so long I suspect it wasn't too reliable although I did try cranking quite a bit prior to the test)...Got a code 522 (was in neutral?) and a 111 system pass.
I'm leaning toward ignition, and I'll pull the plugs to check those next Ought to show signs of fuel I'd bet..? I could always swap a spare coil in to make sure its not that?

any thoughts?

IT LIVES!!!

Traced it down to a busted ROTOR. Starting to question quality NAPA parts.

Anyway....took the cap off to see if the rotor was turning while cranked....didn't make it that far as the rotor spun freely on the distributor shaft.

i'll post a photo later. I'm going for a much deserved drive....and French Toast. I'm hungry.

Later....

Oh yeah. NEVER give up, eventually you will stumble upon the issue causing the problem.

Ok. ran it a bit and got another new code a 332 and that stupid 522 (yes its in neutral during test--so why the code?)
Truck runs really smooth now and if I get some new tires on this I suspect it will handle better (I see cracking in between the tread blocks---I know you all are totally shocked)

I double checked fluid levels and added both some coolant and a quart of oil. I guess I had too much ATF in the PS and it checked its own level...hope it stops the drips soon.

(copy and paste from troublecodes.net)
332----Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system insufficient flow detected Hose blocked/leaking, wiring, EGR solenoid filter, EGR solenoid, EGR valve/position sensor, ECM
332----Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system insufficient flow detected Hose blocked leaking, EGR solenoid, exhaust gas pressure sensor, EGR valve, ECM

I will look at these items, but would this have been caused from my first thought that I wasn't getting fuel and using an excessive amount of starting aid?
