View Full Version : Shane's Bronco Prerunner build (aka cage updates)
shaner17 07-17-2007, 06:02 PM Just thought I would throw up some of my build from start to almost finished, plan on testing in Sept out in Ocotillo and then pre-run/ chase for this years Baja 1k.
This Bronco has been in our family since my dad bought it from ford in 1984, mainly to tow our motorcyles down to our house in San Felipe. Then when I turned 16 back in 2000 it was my first vechical, which was awesome since I learned how to drive in it down in baja when i was 8 years old. I beat the crap out of this Bronco but always got me home when I lived in Santa Cruz i would take it to Tahoe, Hollister Hill, Pismo etc... I have been back in San Diego for about 5 years always kept the Bronco in good shape but since been thru a few trucks (know I have a 06' F-150 5.4L love it!) and sold the sand rail I built to start this project, then put my dad in the seat of a few friends pre-runners/race trucks and he was hooked and well the rest is history...:thumbup
This one is in Hollister Hills back in 2000

Thanks I would have to say the same for you, lookin good:thumbup
Shane, this will become the most viewed thread in the Broncospeed forum. Great job again man!
Behind your class 3 ofcourse:beer
Looks mega fun. What will the paint look like?
I want to get Ford's Arizona Tan? (or similar to it) and black two tone across the rocker panel. Its the same paint scheme as my Pop's 02' F-250 Lariat PSD. Get it to match a little with the tow rig, unless i decide to tow it behind my F-150 which wouldn't be the best idea in the world. I towed it to the shop behind my truck but its only across town and I took it very slow, Ive pulled Toyotas and buggies to the desert but never any fullsize rigs.
bronco boy 07-17-2007, 08:53 PM Lookin' good! :beer
Brokenbronco 07-17-2007, 08:54 PM Shane, i said it before,i'll say it again...WOW! I can't wait to see it finished!
Polar Cub 07-17-2007, 09:21 PM Nice progress on the bronco.... I like it alot. I am looking forward to seeing more of it. I am guessing we will get to see some action shots in the fall??????
Blueblood 07-17-2007, 09:43 PM right on rear bumper and radiator support look great. keep up the good work
p.s. any issue with the 4' wider beams and autofab (tire hitting the glass)
gunit 07-17-2007, 11:06 PM Shane
Your build looks great, I am going to steal some ideas from you.
Dave
shaner17 07-18-2007, 12:17 PM Thanks for all the great comments and steal all the ideas you want, we stole a few ourselves:thumbup
We are shooting for testing in Sept like labor time, more progress to come...
We did some minor trimming on the front of the glass but other than than that the only thing that hits at full compression are the Fox bump stops.
Great build. I'm stealing a few ideas myself.
Brokend 07-18-2007, 04:11 PM Is it just the angle of the photo, or are those non-flared fiberglass fenders? If so, I'm calling autofab now, those look great
shaner17 07-18-2007, 04:25 PM They are flared just not as excessive as others out there. They are the Ashley style fenders.
chasespeed 07-18-2007, 04:56 PM Did you use 93 adn up doors to mathc the lines in the fenders?
Chase
shaner17 07-18-2007, 05:14 PM nope the tube and doors are from 1984. Just have to take the metal stripping off and fill the holes then paint. Suprises me how little Ford changed from 1980-96. I always loved the 96' front end which is why we updated the glass, Im also going to get some 96' rear tail lights for it.
We were going to get the 04-06' one-piece from fiberwerx but decided it looked way to funky. Found the 96' fenders and hood on race-dezert for $250 never mounted. We cut a lot of the cost down by searching all the race sites classifieds. Our family friend also works at Fox racing shocks up in Watsonville, CA and got us all the shocks brand new for 50% off which is alot of money considering how much they cost. We told them what we were building and what we wanted then sent them directly to my door.
chasespeed 07-18-2007, 05:37 PM Never really paid too much attention to the lines, for some reason I was thinking the 93 and up lines were a little different, guess it was just that damn body moulding....
ANYWAY, looking good...
I have been looking for some pictures of the glass fro the 80-86 fenders, I saw somewhere, someone makes/made them, but, no pics.
Chase
Drilim 07-18-2007, 07:01 PM Very Very Impressive. Gorgeous work.
g2zephyr 07-18-2007, 07:42 PM THAT THING IS AWESOME:thumbup
that 8 tube junction is some amazing fabwork
Damager 07-19-2007, 10:07 PM I have to agree with everyones comments .. remarkably impressive :rockon
Sweet detail and beautiful welds to boot
broncoboy23 07-23-2007, 01:54 AM That cage is pure art! Ive been working on my cage, and I wish it looked half as good. There are some very talented people working on that truck, looking great!
steveG 07-23-2007, 01:04 PM We were going to get the 04-06' one-piece from fiberwerx but decided it looked way to funky.
Good call. Some of these "updated" front ends look like #%^.
Found the 96' fenders and hood on race-dezert for $250 never mounted.
Nice!
shaner17 07-23-2007, 02:38 PM Got the spray gun out last weekend and painted the whole engine compartment, frame, cage, bumper and firewall gloss black. Sat we shot the front half then sunday the back half and touched up the rest of the front half. Came out bitchin' for a bunch of amuaters. We also sprayed the steering and radiator support. I have pics of us spraying but the camera battery went dead when we tried to take a pic of the finished product.
Next is the rest of the frame and undercarriage(gloss black) then the inside cage will be clear coat and the body tan.
Blueblood 07-29-2007, 07:07 PM shane anymore progress ? your rear bumper is one of the nice ones i have seen. almost the same as an idea for my rear bumper. keep it up
shaner17 07-30-2007, 01:30 PM Still painting... got the beams, steering, rear bumper painted.
Started prepping the body for paint. Thanks im really happy with all the fabrication by Jeff over at Function First Fabrication.
fartman 07-31-2007, 01:04 PM Is that the same Bronco that is in a add for Cage in the 9/07 Petersen's? If not whos is it?
shaner17 07-31-2007, 01:30 PM Im not sure what add your talking about but my bronco has never been in an off-road mag.
fartman 07-31-2007, 03:08 PM Its a small add for CAGE, and it has a white Bronco with a softop on flexing on a ramp. p126 of sept. 07 4wheeloffroad.

broncoboy23 07-31-2007, 05:53 PM :stupid
you wont catch him in the broncospeed section much though, he spends a lot of time in the SAS forum, very nice truck and a very nice guy.
Mogley 07-31-2007, 05:59 PM That cage is crazy. Very nice. I would love to see some vids someday of her in action.
BroncoDon 07-31-2007, 06:36 PM Quality build. Looks like you're doing it right the first time. I'm looking forward to seeing it completed.

broncoboy23 08-06-2007, 01:52 PM That is really nice. Its always nice to see someone spend so much time and effort making such a well-built truck. Cant wait to see it in action! But take your time...
meepers 08-07-2007, 12:47 AM WOAH! Now that is what a truck is supposed to be. love the cage. I was looking for a simple bolt on, but after seeing that, makes me want to buy a mandrel bender :D Cant wait to see the finished product to get some more ideas for my new toy.
motoxscott 08-17-2007, 09:32 PM Shane ... how was installing the Autofab rear glass? I just picked up a set myself. Have any close up pics of the fit etc?
- Scott
shaner17 08-20-2007, 12:59 PM Scott, My buddy Andy did the rear glass while the Bronco was @ F3 he just used the instructions on autofab's website.
http://www.autofab.com/install_rear_quarter_panels.htm
I dont see any close ups of my rear panels in my photobucket but Ill try and get some later this week.

Revenant 08-20-2007, 04:30 PM I am soo jealous...that Bronco is amazing and I need a better paying job.
Keep us updated.

fordbajaking 08-22-2007, 11:44 PM i need a idea around how much i need.
steveG 08-22-2007, 11:54 PM You need to talk to a shop. Prices vary, a lot.
f150i6 08-22-2007, 11:57 PM dude i neeeeed to know where i can get a prerunner bumper with a skid plate like that... i HAVE to have one before my school starts back.. HELP ME!!!

fordbajaking 08-23-2007, 12:03 AM right on bro thanks for the help. was trying to get an average price that has done it late.
shaner17 08-23-2007, 01:22 PM Call Function first fab and Jef will you an estimate, see link below...
I have all my receipts but I dont dare to add them up untill Im done, also check classifieds for some deals, were in no rush which actually seems to help since this project has been going on for over a year know...
TWIZLR 08-23-2007, 07:30 PM I'm jealous, that thing is going to be one of the badest Broncos .
chasespeed 08-23-2007, 10:09 PM dude i neeeeed to know where i can get a prerunner bumper with a skid plate like that... i HAVE to have one before my school starts back.. HELP ME!!!
Dude, tell me you are talking about college....
Chase
fordbajaking 08-23-2007, 11:07 PM thanks for info dude, really appreciate. bronco is badass.
seawalkersee 08-26-2007, 12:54 AM Did you guys make the plating with the holes in it or can you buy it already pressed like that (the stuff in the bumper and by the B-pillar)?
Chris
shaner17 08-30-2007, 02:47 PM Jeff has a dimple die set to strengthen the metal by adding those dimples
you see in the pillars and other various plates on the bronco. I saw a video once of a guy standing on a strip of metal(I think aluminum) and it wouldnt support his weight, then he put some dimples in it and then he could stand on it no problem, somehow it strengthens the metal, dont ask me how.
chasespeed 08-30-2007, 07:44 PM Same thing happens with a bead roller, and sheet metal...
Except, with a dimple die set, you shave some weight as well...
The crease, adds strength...
Chase
Blueblood 09-16-2007, 05:25 PM Hows the bronc been coming along in the past 2 week.
shaner17 09-17-2007, 12:23 PM Not good at all, work, playin and moving have killed my deadline:cry, but my new place in Bonita has a 3 car garage so Im moving the bronco there. Then I dont have to drve 20min away to go and work on it, but I do have to move all my stuff which is a pain...Once I get it over there I will really start wrenching on it and down the street isproctor valley rd which looks like great testing grounds for it when finished.
Blueblood 09-17-2007, 09:55 PM everything happens for a reason. seeing your build and everyone elses, keeps put fuel on the fire (under my butt) to get mine back in action. so keep up the great work.
Wanna Bronco 09-18-2007, 02:05 AM thats a nice truck dude, would love to help you out, or just hang out and watch, i live right down the road in La Mesa, and go to welding school right over in National city. let me know Jimmy
Blueblood 09-22-2007, 01:14 PM hey shane i just got the new bronco driver mag and there pics of your cage are in it, nice work. maybe when its all done they will do a full write up
Blueblood 11-25-2007, 05:35 PM shane is your beast roaming the desert yet?
shaner17 11-26-2007, 02:26 PM Not yet but its finally in my garage and I have been workin on it almost every day after work...I talked to Bronco driver and they said they might do a full article/possibly a cover shot when its all done, we are shooting for spring, Ill post some pics when I finish painting the cage(clearcoat) and inside cage(black) once thats all done Im going to turn back to the motor(needs new carb, waterpump, plumbing, wiring etc...), tranny(need to put TC, starter, flywheel and hook up the gate shifter) and Im going to order some new drive shafts from Oceanside driveline. Then it will go back to Function First fabrication for door bars, install limit straps, engine cross member, rear bump stop pads and a few other things. We will probably have a few spins aroung the local trails before it goes back to the shop tho. Im also looking into the roller paint job for the exterior, I like how its cheap and can be done in my garage, thats still in the works tho. Thanks for the support.:beer
Blueblood 11-30-2007, 09:21 PM right on that would be pretty sweet to see it in bronco driver when its all done you should try to make a trip to pismo i would like to check it out in person
BigBlue89Bronco 12-10-2007, 08:38 PM "hoooollllyyy shiiii...."
shaner17 03-21-2008, 02:34 PM Wow I havent been on here in awhile, no real big updates latley things have slowed down but hoping to pick back up soon.
Im looking to buy my first house in San Diego I got approved on a loan so I have been trying to save alot of money for the down payment which I have achieved now I just got to settle a deal...those short sales take alot of time...this weekend I plan on working on it thru sunday.
shaner17 11-24-2008, 07:16 PM I figured Id bring this back from the dead, like I said things slowed down on this project(bought my first home in august), but I convinced my fiancee that I needed to finish this project up. Ill post some pics of where Im at so far...
got some Wrangler MTR's, painted the front glass, grinded lots and lots of rust and re painted, but now Im just going to focus on getting the engine started again, then work from that point on, I want to be in the desert by feb. and hopefully take it down for the 250.
Revenant 11-24-2008, 08:27 PM Eager for pics! :popc1:
Polar Cub 11-24-2008, 10:02 PM Glad your back on it man...looking for the pics :)

shaner17 11-25-2008, 01:50 AM Im trying to figure out the best carb set up for my rig...
mainly stock 351W just intake HEI distributor and headers.
I hear C&J builds a sweet carb right out of the box, but is it really going to cost a grand for one built?
or I was going to get a holley, but which one would be best for running in the rough? The engine has always ran a 2bbl which would cut out alot when playing hard. EFI is not an option right now.
Thanks for any input.
AzDirtworx 11-25-2008, 02:05 AM definately nice ****...:rockon:rockon
gunit 11-25-2008, 02:07 AM I popped for a C&J carb and I have had great luck with it. The engine ran great right out of the box, when I rebuilt the motor and changed a few things they gave me the exact changes to the set up and again it worked perfect.
With the mods they do and a sucker pump it works on hills and in the bumps without a bobble.
shaner17 11-25-2008, 01:33 PM I popped for a C&J carb and I have had great luck with it. The engine ran great right out of the box, when I rebuilt the motor and changed a few things they gave me the exact changes to the set up and again it worked perfect.

I filled out their form and just e-mailed it to them. I really do want one I have heard nothing but great things about them.
shaner17 11-25-2008, 01:35 PM Also Im trying to figure out how to mount my alternator without the smog pump...I havent had this engine back together in almost 2 years and the layout is getting fuzzy, does anyone have a pic of their's installed on a carbed 351 with no smog pump? I have a feeling Im missing a few parts and my shop manuel is not helping me very much visually.
yogib 11-25-2008, 03:45 PM I purchased a smog pump eliminator pulley for mine. From summit or somewhere.Cant remember for sure.Did you build the steering setup?Looks nice.
shaner17 01-27-2009, 01:41 PM Im getting it ready to fire up this weekend, finally got the alternator mounted after the third bracket(just went back to stock), got the carb on and ran some new fuel lines, re-builts tranny and new TC are finally in(pain in the ass)new plugs, wires, belts, oil, gaskets, hoses, etc...just hope she fires up, hasnt ran in over 2.5 years.
Just need a different bracket for my art carr shifter, apparently I have a C4 instead of a C6.
Yogi: Function first fabrication by Jeff Veraldi has been working in some other shops due to the slow down in work, he still has the shop for his class 7 truck but not really building his own stuff right now...

steveG 04-20-2009, 02:12 AM Looking good, Shane!
shaner17 04-20-2009, 02:42 AM And we took it out for the first time out in Plaster city, it was so sweet driving it, the motor is running strong I just need a bigger tranny cooler for it. The bronc soak up every thing we threw at it, seems a little soft tho.

yogib 04-20-2009, 02:00 PM Looking good Shane glad to see it rolling. We need more class 3 racers. It sucked to only see one Bronco at Primm BITD race.
shaner17 04-20-2009, 02:44 PM The wider beams kind of take me out of the running for class 3 but would like to run a few sportsman races in the future. Until then just messing around and pre running for now. Unless I hit the lotto jackpot...
