Does anyone else get strange creaking/groaning noise from the front end especially when backing up? I am just curious as since I went to the cut and turned beams up front I seem to get some odd noises in the bronco when in reverse, nothing metallic or grinding almost sounds like bushings. The truck drives fine and when I am out in it everything seems to be fine I have just attritibuted it the front flexing more anyways jsut wondering if anyone else gets it.

huck rivets. the rivets that hold your engine crossmember to your frame

Dustin, could you elaborate a bit on this for me....are you saying that the rivets could be broken or just causing the noise and no worries? Any way to quiet them down? Thanks

i think he means that the rivets many have loosen over the years . iguess drill or grind them and replace them with bolts. Dustin please corrrect me if iam wrong

Steve83 has probably posted the service bulletin on that at his Supermotors site. It's a common problem.

I am having this similiar grinding noise in the right front passangers tire side. When I reverse their is a loud grind sound that sounds simliar to when your tires rub the fender. I believe it is deep in the right tire. Does any one know what could be causing this?

My guess is our wheel bearing, when I toasted my right side it was very loud in reverse. Pull the hub and check it will be obvious if thats the problem, other than that check all your brake components along wiht the general look around.

Jeremy.

TURN YOUR RADIO UP!
theres many things that make noise with ttb I would check these first
1)bushings
2)bearings
3)balljoints
4) brakes and calipers
5)rivets
I eliminated all the rivets and bushings the rattle noises only got worse.

From a safety angle I would always give my bronco (or whatever were prerunning in a full prep) and every time we stop before you grab a drink take a few min. to check you suspension and open the hood. You might be surprised what you find.

I know this sounds stupid..... But check your motor mounts too. If the motor mounts get worn or soaked in oil they flex more than normal. When you back up it causes your motor to flex the other way and the fan slightly touches the shroud. Sounds stupid but I've seen it alot. Not saying it's everyone's problem but seth15c check the motor mounts you're explaining perfectly the sound it makes! Mine does the creaking when I back up with my cut and turned beams. I always thought it might be the heims or line-a-balls?? I know mines not the rivets because I have none anymore. (replaced them with bolts and toplocks) Just a suggestion?

It was very late last night and I probably didn't do a great job of explaining. The grinding noise only happens on the passenger’s side when I am reversing and turning my wheels real sharp to one direction. Otherwise there is no noise. It definitely seems to sound like it is inside the wheel it self, because as I am slowing down in reverse (coming to a stop) the grinding noise coincides with the speed of slowing down....meaning the grinding noise is fast and starts to slow it's grind as the car slows to a stop. Does this help clarify what the problem might be?

Thanks everyone!

Check you brake pads/sliders and your wheel bearings. Also make sure the wheel isn't touching the backing plate for some reason.

I've had the stainless retainers for the brake shoes rub the inside of the wheel and make some awful sounds, including a high pitch squeel at speed.

Seth what your describing sounds like a wheel bearing, a quick check though not definitive is jack up the right side tire it (use a stand) the air and pull on the wheel you wil likely feel lateral movement. The next step would be to pull the tire double check brakes and I highly recommend you you pull the hub. I am guessing you will find some nice metal shavings in there. When mine finally let go all the way it was a horrible noise. It all started with the grinding noises your describing in reverse, it was very obvious when I had it at the smog shop and the guy backed it up while I was standing there.
You really need to check it before you drive it anymore, if it is the bearing your risking more damage. Just my two cents.

OK thanks for the info...I believe from all the post I have read on this site(past, and present) it is sounding like it will be a wheel bearing. I am going to try and check it tonight when I get off work.

Does anyone now how much something like this might cost to have fixed at a mechanics shop?

Thanks again,
Seth

I am guessing at least a hour of labor + parts. So probably about 250 ball park. Prety pricey when paying for someone else to do it. Where are you located the job itself is not a tough one.

Yes I know it is not a very tuff job as I did it many years ago when I was in College. The problem is I broke my foot and I am on crutches these days. I also don't really have all the necessary tools to do the job effectively. Plus to be perfectly honest I do not have the time as I work five days a week from 8 to 7. The weekends are for the little lady and helping her paint cribs, dressers, and shelves for our baby which is due in October.

The Bronco is my ride to work every day currently. I was thinking of dropping it off at a shop and catching a ride to work with a Coworker one day....

I live in the North Bay in Marin County in the city of San Rafael. I called a local shop today and they told me they would pack and seal both sides for 210 totals (105 per side). They also said that while they are in there they would let me know if a wheel bearing is bad or not. If parts are bad I can go to pick up new ones from the dealer. I also called the Ford Dealer and they have new bearings for $22.

Thanks,
Seth
