View Full Version : Project Retro Bronco
Ditch Baby 09-03-2007, 02:29 PM Picked up a free Dirt Sports mag at the truckfest a few weeks ago.... they have an article in there where they are building up a 90s bronco.
did a little searching and came up with this-
make sure to check out the different parts
http://ford.off-road.com/Project+Retro+Bronco
and this is the article in the August 2007 Issue of Dirt Sports

BajaBronco13 09-03-2007, 03:41 PM Hey Nascar,
Too bad you're in Florida because they are going to unveil it at the Off Road Expo in Los Angeles in October. Should be an incredible vehicle once it's complete.
CP
Ditch Baby 09-03-2007, 04:23 PM really?
get lots of pics, the thing seems like a work of art
That thing is so bad ass.
ToddACimer 09-03-2007, 08:07 PM that rig looks bad ass
BajaBronco13 09-04-2007, 01:03 AM Speed Unlimited is just South of Los Angeles. Those guys are not only building the Retro Bronco, I talked to Ruben (owner) and he told me they have two or three more high end prerunner Broncos scheduled to be built within the year.
Check out their site:

DcSkater602 09-04-2007, 02:21 AM wow thats amazing... how the F^*%(^% do you weld like this???

Hopper 09-04-2007, 02:27 AM That thing is :chili:
Brokenbronco 09-04-2007, 03:52 AM It is very Cool, but very, very, very...VERY! EXPENSIVE!
I'm willing to bet that for the cash that is being pumped into that ride, you could build a trophy truck...i mean that's basically what it is.
BajaBronco13 09-04-2007, 05:12 PM Hey Nick,
I heard the build figure and you are right. It's in the six figure range.
CP
miesk5 09-07-2007, 05:50 PM Dc, that works looks like a Navy Nuclear Program welder did it...great workmanship and prob had heat treating and inspection
BajaBronco13 09-26-2007, 06:23 PM I talked to Speed Unlimited yesterday, looks like the Retro Bronco has returned from power coating, rhino lining and paint. This thing is going to look insane. Just a couple of more weeks until it's debut at the Off Road Expo in Pomona California.

Personally I think they missed the boat. My reply on RDC:
I'm sure once it's painted and complete it'll look good, but it's certainly not my style. I don't understand the latest trend of adding huge upward bulges and curvy body lines to trucks that were virtually all boxes and rectangles. It reminds me too much of "The Fast And The Furious" style imports or the crazy mini-truck body kits from the 80's. Maybe the truxterossa kits will make a come back soon....
That said, I'm looking forward to the end product.
BajaBronco13 09-26-2007, 08:04 PM I don't think the bed sides look so bad. I'm bummed they didn't stretch the hard top in the middle so that they could extend the side glass windows. I think it would like better that way. At least that's my two cents. Thanks for the pics SteveG.
CP
i would have just put bigger glass in the shell, the big glob of fiberglass at the back of the shell looks like crap and will give them one hell of a blindspot. i think the glass looks like all the new stuff that the trophy trucks are running, all the cool kids are going it.
Hopper 09-26-2007, 08:18 PM :uke: on the glass. It looks horrible right now, but maybe it'll be better after the final fit and paint...
That said, give me the old-school glass any day...
Ditch Baby 09-26-2007, 08:30 PM what the fuuuuuuu...... is up with the rear glass???? i can see the curves coming from making them flared and a larger opening, but i dont see the need for that?
reptillikus 09-26-2007, 08:49 PM http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/567983/fullsize/stretched-bronco.jpg
Not only are the rear fenders hideous (the autofab ones are wayyyy better), but it looks like they stretched the camper as well??? :uke:
steveG 09-26-2007, 08:54 PM The wheelbase was stretched, creating the need for custom fenders.

BajaBronco13 09-27-2007, 05:40 PM My bad, just checked my old issue of Dirtsports with phase 1 of the Retro Bronco build. It is the EJR Bronco on the link I have referenced.
CP
Blueblood 09-29-2007, 07:05 PM the rear glass is ok, but the rest of the truck is sweet i am sure it will look much better when its painted. i would trade a kidney for that truck :)
BajaBronco13 10-01-2007, 12:48 AM I had a chance to stop by and see the progress on the Retro Bronco over at Speed Unlimited. That thing is looking wicked. Everything had returned from the powder coater and was layed out to be reinstalled once the paint on the body was completed. I can't wait to see the finished truck next week at the Off Road Expo.

Agree. It is not to my liking a window stretch is my choice. I don't think the found the windo guy before the build the top. Bedsides are custom and are for show. Dont care for them either. Wonder what else is unusual?

tiller 83 10-04-2007, 08:51 PM the glass looks normal. they should have built in some vents in the extra space. or they'll put a sticker there. i see the normal rear susp. what did they do with the front ttb setup ? no matter what it looks like ...... any of us would sport that m/f --- till it broke!
Brokenbronco 10-05-2007, 11:44 PM the glass looks normal.
Compared to what?
i see the normal rear susp.
You consider a 4 link with trailing arms normal?
what did they do with the front ttb setup
I hope you don't consider this normal also :doh0715:

The front beams and the rear axle are nickel plated. Very bling bling looking. Can't wait to see it all together tomorrow.

Slablocal 10-08-2007, 12:51 AM well guys, the bronco had a great debut at the off road expo. Thanks for all the imput. I just started reading this thread, at first i was skeptical of the glass, but now that its done, it looks so clean and really flows, but i realize it might not be for everyone. I dont have any pics of it DONE like it was at the expo, but here are a few from thursday and friday night assembly.

steveG 10-08-2007, 01:01 AM Good to see you here on FSB. Welcome! I didn't make the Expo and have only seen one partial picture of the end product. I have to admit it looks better than I expected. I can't wait to see better pics of the end product.
I dig the way the grill & headlamp assembly pivots down!
Keep up the good work!

Hopper 10-08-2007, 04:20 AM :shocked
The wider flares came together MUCH more nicely than I thought they would. I have to say that I still like the older style more, but there is nothing wrong with those by any means. I normally don't like one-peice fiberglass flip front bodies at all, but they pulled that one off nicely.
The only thing it looses points for is the lightbar...I hate those with a passion...
I'm no longer the slightest bit disappointed at all. Well, if the lightbar was gone it would be a perfect 10, but you can't have everything
JKossarides 10-08-2007, 10:42 AM That is one HOT looking BKO ~ :thumbup
broncoformudv 10-08-2007, 10:48 AM Anyone have some tissue? I need to clean my pants up.
That beast is awesome!!!
Love that front grill pivot. Never seen anything like it or the TTB.
Where did the carbon fiber parts for the door panels come from?
I agree the light bar needs to be rebuilt. Everything else flows together but it is all blocky like an afterthought.
BajaBronco13 10-08-2007, 05:43 PM Originally the light bar was going to be able to lay back and become flush mounted into the hard top but it looks like they didn't take that route after all. I saw the truck in person on Saturday and the photos just don't do it justice. It's such a clean ride with a killer interior. I'd love to prerun the 1000 in that bad boy.
Chris
SoCalFSB 10-08-2007, 05:52 PM Theres a picture of Archer557 sitting in it somewhere. Blueblood 10-09-2007, 09:35 AM bad a$$ its a work of art.. i will take 2 put them on my credit card :)
i was lucky enough to see it in person and OH MY GOD!!! it is truly a work of art with nothing overlooked. my favorite things were the air filter system, the engine cross bar and of course the ttb. i think they went above and beyond everyones expectations and will have a long list of new customers after this build.
BajaBronco13 10-09-2007, 04:22 PM Hey Ollie,
Ruben at Speed Unlimited told me that it will have a spread in the Masterpiece in Metal section of Dirtsports magazine once it's complete.
Now how bad @$$ was that one piece front glass? Who said my kids need to go to college, lol.

that will be the second insane bronco in the masterpiece section.
i really liked the one piece front end, i am really glad they didn't do that ugly ass updated front end with the 97+ lights. personally i like the stock grill over the stull style one but i wouldn't complain if it was mine.

Agreed. The "updated" front end craze is out of control. Just because it's newer doesn't mean it's better. I do really like the front clip on that truck. They did an awesome job with the lines, flaring, etc.
Kudos to all involved!

BajaBronco13 10-09-2007, 07:36 PM RedWagon, you missed out brother. That rig was really the only reason I showed up to the Expo.
And I agree, I love the 92-96 grilles, though I'm keeping it old school with my Class 3 build, I'm keeping my 86 grille with Autofab fenders and hood. Another 200k and maybe I'll make it the 3rd Bronco in Masterpiece in Metal section, LOL.

Washburn 10-10-2007, 03:46 PM While the workmanship is awesome, it looks too much like a stepside with a shell.
duh_09 10-14-2007, 10:50 PM Agree about the stepside look but DA-YUM! Who cares all that much?
Please tell me someone is mass producing thos door panels and I can order them somewhere... I've been dreaming of that for the past year or so... I WANT THEM!!!! I need to get me some carbon fiber and fiberglass and get to making something like that...
GTRider245 10-23-2007, 12:39 PM For some reason I think it would look awesome with:
1. The stock grille. Flame away!
2. A prerunner style front bumper with some lights.
Regardless, it looks awesome the way it is!

I agree, but....the grill opening is wider than stock, so it could be fabbed, but it would be very time consuming. Cool nonetheless. It needs one of my bumpers on it too:toothless, but it would obstruct the one piece front end when it opens.

I see tabs for a skid plate already...
To match the tilting front end...
I would work something like the Humvee's have, with a bar that, once un-pinned, folds outta the way... just use a hitch pin...

but id like to see a bumper on the thing, and those bolts on the quarter, fender, and anywhere else shaved.
and they didnt even shave the bedside flares into the 1/4 panel??
does it look good, yea, it looks great, i can bet the craftsmanship is unbeleivable, and the pics ive seen prolly dont compare to seeing everything in real life.

I'm just kidding about the cobwebs. It's not on the backburner, but if I understood Reuben correctly, the owner is really trying to nail every last detail and it's taking a long time.
