If I was dropping a 14b in my truck, I'd hate you. Nice score man... I think a brand new detroit for a 14b is like 680ish. You basically got a free detroit when you bought a set of gears lol...

For that price though, I'd buy a rebuild kit for the detroit, and rebuild it anyway. Just incase the guy snapped an axle shaft and unloaded the thing hard.

usually crap on ebay doesn't save that much money since everyone is on it and there are so many message boards to spread the news and then the bid wars begin.... thought i did awesome getting my 10.25 full detroit shipped to my house for $300 with new extra bearings from a tx offroad board... good score

Dave and I dissasembled it to make sure the locker wasn't gernaded, it all looked great, springs were still extremly still.

The 5.13s aren't in perfect shape(i knew this before i bought everything) The pinon support shank has some galding on one side of it, and there is an ever so slight chip in one of the pinion teeth. VERY small. I didn't want to run 5.13s anyway. These will end up on ebay, ck5 or nc4x4, or maybe traded for some 4.88s if i can find somebody who wants them

Ok....strange turn of events.....

Last night i got to looking at the stuff and it didn't really look all that much like 14bolt parts after i examined it close. Today i called eaton to figure out why the side gears had 17 "square" splines instead of 30 normal ones. Turns out the locker/carrier/gears are NOT from a corporate GM 14bolt 10.5. They are from some old axle called a HO72 or HO52, apparently interchangeable. The dude said that chevy used them in the 60s and that parts for them are hard to come by and very desirable. Supposedly the locker goes for $600 easy.

The auction said it was for the "old style" 14 bolt, which i thought it meant the one from 88 or so back. Now, i don't guess i can blame the guy for misrepresentation, i should have asked some questions.

IM gonna do some research, I think this stuff will end up on ebay or on a forum somewhere if its actually desireable.

Info off the net...The Eaton rear axle is easy to ID because it has a removable carrier pig and no removable cover plate. If it has a ring gear thrust pad adjuster on the side of carrier housing, it is a HO72 series axle. A detriot locker is the old option for that tuff old axle (it is well above a D60 in strength) The HO52-72 have the same interals gear and locker wise.

67 to 72 Eaton HO72 rear axles were used in 3/4 and 1 ton P/U's. It has a 11.5 inch gear and is basically bullet proof. The only draw back is that only locker option is a detroit and there is only two ratios for it, a 4.57 (yes 4.57) and a 5.14 (yep 5.14). It has a full stradle mounted pinion and a adjustable thrush pad to limit ring gear deflection under severe loads too. They replaced it with the cheaper to build 14 bolt 10.5 in 73 which while itself it is a very stout axle, is a lessor axle than the Eaton it replaced.

my ring gear is like 10 and 1/8" from what i understand that confirms that is an ho72/52 of some kind....i still got some searching to do...

I counted an divided the ring and pinion teeth....5.14s so apparently these axles had a little odd gearing.

Yeah, i saw that ebay auction. I think this thing is gonna end up on ebay. I may list it on pirate first....im def. gonna make sure i get enough to buy a real 14bolt detroit.

I was wondering if this Locker ever got sold.. Along with the 5:14 Gearset... I just picked up a 4.56 (.57) whole 3rd member without a locker and am looking for a 5.14 with the Detroit setup... How much would you be willing to part with it for?

Anyone else know a good place to find the 5.14 Detroit setup?

I beleive thats a double bearing on that pinion. it is massive. they are well over $200 alone.

I think I would have gone HO72 now if I was to do it all over. the stock 14 bolt shafts fit in the housing, you put in the 14 bolt locker and your set with stronger shafts, yet a better housing design, no need for plug welds to break and spin tubes.

i sold it a couple of weeks ago to a guy on pirate 4x4.

After doing some research on them i wouldn't mind running one some day. If i ever find one in the junkyard i might go ahead and snag it and rebuild it little by little. Those things are expensive thou. Bearings are something like $150 a piece. Some 4x4 company needs to start manufacturing the ho72 parts.
