View Full Version : need some advice, be serious please
rsalter66 09-16-2007, 01:17 PM I just sold a 460 that I bought and did not use, I bought it sight unseen, he even delivered it, I cleaned it up and painted it, pulled the pan and valve covers and looked it over, checked the rods for slop but did not pull the caps, everything looked fine, I decided to go with a different motor that I have so I sold the 460 for what I paid for it, the guy came and looked it over with the pan and covers still off for about a 1/2 hr, decided he wanted it and took it home, now a week later he calls me up and says its junk he can see cooper on the bearings and the crank is shot? it turned over fine when it left here? its a 75 high mileage motor isnt cooper showing normal? now I feel bad but not bad enough to refund any money,he looked it over before hand and i never lied to him about anything so my question is am I wrong??
B.B.Bronc 09-16-2007, 01:41 PM No, Thats a chance you take when you buy a used high-milage engine. Any time I have ever bought one I expected the worst (as long as the block and heads arn't cracked)

:stupid
MikE2 09-16-2007, 01:59 PM The guy is an idiot. Anything used or bought like that is always buyer beware. What you bought is what you got.
As long as you didn't tell him it it was all new or rebuilt or it was in excellent condition internally don't worry about it.
Tell the guy he needs to quit being a bitch
rsalter66 09-16-2007, 02:02 PM well thats how I feel too , but I feel bad at the same time because I was not trying to screw anyone :hump but I should have known better than to sell to this guy because I didnt like him from the start :smilie_slap he kinda looked like a weasel + he kept bitching about a 429 that he bought + said it was bad too :toothless I should have went with my gut feelings and said :iiss:brownbag and we are only talking $250 here, hell a good core cost about that much dont it?, and i also dont think there was anything wrong with the motor I think he's just a tool :red x
MikE2 09-16-2007, 02:10 PM + tell him he bought it "as is", + just as any sale is when its something used + like that. + if he doesn't like that then he + can sell it to someone else + and try and get his money back +
Tell the guy + he needs to wake up and learn this + isn't how things work when you buy something used + without a + warranty + or gaurauntee.

I was + thinking pretty much the same thing + I was wondering if I was the only + 1 that saw how + stupid this + is
Spazmo 09-16-2007, 02:46 PM +
I'd offer to refund the money and take the motor back. Make real sure you get ALL THE PARTS back. He might be trying to screw you. And no refund until you can verify you've got everything you sold him - UNDAMAGED.
Take a hint from retail stores. That's what they do.
Suggestion: never sell anything like that except 'as is - no refund'.
My 2¢....
Spazmo 09-16-2007, 03:11 PM I honestly wouldn't. He looked at it (from what the original poster said) and he wanted it. End of the deal.
Now it's completely different if by "looking at it" you meant online or something like that, or if you promised him it'd work properly and it was a good capable block. Then I'd have a problem with keeping the cash.
Need4racin 09-16-2007, 03:12 PM could you please use "and" instead of "+". It's a pain in the ass to read it with +'s.

96GreenMonster 09-16-2007, 03:21 PM im that guy you prick and i want my money!!!!
ahah just kidding, sorry i wasnt serious, so now i will add some seriousness(word?)
-you told him the circumstances...he should understand
-he inspected it...not well enough
-he bought it...deal with it and make it work him self.
NOT YOUR PROBLEM ANY MORE :)
bossind 09-16-2007, 03:24 PM If you knew for sure the engine was fine you would have asked much more than 250.00 bucks. You didn't know the history and condition of the engine and based your price accordingly. The guy could have taken the caps off and had a look before buying it. Its the risk you take when your buying in that price point, if it was 800.00 bucks than yes he could expect it too be a good engine.

My 2¢.... no he looked it over very good before he bought it! i bought the damn thing sight unseen and I would never have complained if it was bad or not it was $250 what did he want a brand new motor? so what if he has to replace a bearing? I was very straight forward with the guy and told him exactly what I knew and that was not much you allways expect to freshen up a used motor atleast I do

yes he was here for awhile looking at it, so I'm over it thanks for the input

sorry bad habit, fixed it
Sixlitre 09-16-2007, 03:56 PM Like you say
that's almost core price for a fully assembled engine that would probably run (until the copper scored the crank:toothless).
Do you feel guilty about naking it look rebuilt with the spray paint ?
Sixlitre
FordBroncoLover 09-16-2007, 05:23 PM 250 is alright for a 460 block with cylinder heads and intake.
p54519 09-16-2007, 05:29 PM Tell him that you are not a charitable organization. If he would like to communicate with you further, he will need to do so by mail. Call block his ass and move on.
ghglenn 09-16-2007, 05:32 PM He bought a "builder". Not a runner.
jackhart 09-16-2007, 06:41 PM he had the oppty to inspect. if he didn't inspect enough, that's his problem, not yours. you didn't "hide" anything from him.
you didn't make any representations to him, either.
in my book, that engine is now his and his problem.
let me put it another way - if he inspected it, and took it home, and then found out it was balanced, blueprinted and ported, you think he would have called you up and asked to pay you some more money for it? i don't think so.
jopes 09-16-2007, 06:47 PM I treat any used engine purchase as a core. no idea how it was maintained, ran or anything really. it may only have 10,000 miles on it but the thing was abused to shit.
MikE2 09-16-2007, 07:00 PM Me too. In fact every one I've sold I've cleartly stated this is being sold as a rebuildable core since I don't know the running condition.
Audra 09-16-2007, 08:22 PM You don't owe him a thing.
rsalter66 09-16-2007, 08:52 PM Oh trust me I know that but thanks anyways,
the whole reason for the thread was that I try to treat everyone like I would want them to treat me (karma) but I'm not going to get shat on at the same time! so I felt alittle bad, but not bad enough to give back his money, he looked it over long enough to know if he wanted to buy it or not! the pan was off and if he wanted to pull a cap I would have handed him the tools to do it! so thank you everyone , I'm over it now! see ya:whiteflag
bockwho 09-16-2007, 10:58 PM if its rebuildable tell him to get bent..
