so whats the deal on these? I see them everywhere but mostly racing. can you load maps and such like other gps units. whats so special about them? I like the screen size too, would be nice in my toy if it would work for the areas I wheel

The lowrance is a great unit because it is designed to withstand the abuse of off roading. It is shock proof, it is waterproof and dust proof. it is popular with offroad racing because most if not all race files are in the lowrance format. Files can be converted to garmin etc, i just don't know how to do it.

Here's some info

interesting....what type of maps are out there? I assume by reading they are all loaded via the sd port.

looks like it might be an option for me. It would be nice to be able to log my trails and have it right there. normal gps units are too small and a pain to use when trying to drive.

dustin - one of the best things about the lowrance is it is very user friendly. you can download maps from other people through your sd card or just make your own maps while you are on the trail. i have the 480c in my fsb and won't go to the dezert without it.
