Ok guys, it appears as tho we're actually going to be able to make our first road trip, in a year's time. We're going to be in Winthrop, WA the first weekend of March, for my BIL's wedding. I told Kris I want at least one extra day there, so I drive up into Canada and, hopefully, meet a few of you, even if it's just for coffee or lunch.

If any of you feel so inclined to head down to the lodge, this where we're going to be - somewhere in there

Good, then I'll just remind Kris about my plans, and have her plan for a day in Canada. Don't I need my bronco's title to cross the border? I've never driven into/thru canada, so I don't know what all I need

edit - good god! I just found where the F you are! Man, I hope you can meet me halfway, somewhere... 960+ miles, one way, is just too far for me to drive, especially in a Bronco loaded with 3 kids. As it is, we'll be driving about 560+ miles to get to the lodge. And I can't even get directions with Winthrop, WA being one of the stops, but that's going to add at least another 150miles

I do not think any of the online maps are too trustworthy in regards to Canada
I wouldnt trust Yahoo for anything let alone driving directions into a foreign land.

where in Vancouver is 5 minutes from the border?

I think you can get to White rock in 5 minutes

Wintrop has got to be a good ~2-3 hr drive to the local border crossings
isnt that like a transatlantic flight with wife and kids in the vehicle?

have fun, I hope you make it up here, I think it is worth it to escape the USofA

I'm not sure what's where, but NOBS mentioned something about an outing for a day, which makes me glad I talked my wife out of renting a minivan for the week - but also means the wheeling I do is limited to the bunny trails. After all, I gotta drive the F'er 12hrs home, afterwards

Do you ned to go to Seattle for something?
if you can just shoot straight up the 97, to either the 153 or 20, to Winthrop
no sense pushing Portland and Seattle traffic and then climbing Snoqualmie if you dont have to.
Traffic from Olympia to Everett is the worst from here to Los Angeles
If there is a way to avoid Seattle area I would take it.
If I am coming in from Yakima I will turn off and take the 203 goat trail to avoid Seattle to Everett traffic
In a light vehicle the 2 even looks tempting sometimes

Also as far as a trail to run dare I suggest Eagle Ridge? Apparently it's quite a bit more washed out that it used to be plus the snow at the top would add a decent challenge.

I guess that means some of us have to get crackin' and be able to turn a wheel under our own power eh? :brownbag

Davids78Bronco
01-17-2004, 05:04 PM
Where's Eagle Ridge? Is there a site I can read more on it? One thing I have to keep in mind is, since I'm driving everywhere with this, and it has to get me home, I can't do any hard trails, at all. So I'm limited to the bunny trails, and small mud holes

Paul Gagnon
01-18-2004, 04:49 AM
Eagle Ridge is a moderate local urban trail located in the city of Coquitlam (a Vancouver suburb). By urban I mean that the trailhead is a short couple of hundred feet away from a residential area. It is not a hard trail per se but can be quite challenging for a stock truck and/or inexperienced driver. It is a local favourite because when you've got the itch but don't have the time to drive far it's easy to get to. For many of us it takes about 15 minutes to get to if you count grabbing a coffee along the way. Not to mention there are amazing views from the top.

Davids78Bronco
01-18-2004, 05:30 AM
That's in/around vancouver? Do you have pictures of the area?

Mike, what about making a stop by there? :shrug I think I still want to spend most of the day at the mud hole tho - especially if there's gonna be food and beer :D

Davids78Bronco

Yeh, but keep in mind where I'm driving from, and where I need to drive, afterwards. I've got over 1400 miles to cover, in a week's time, and only the Bronco to do it all, so I don't have a choice but to be absolutely easy on the Bronco... and that's even IF I get it dirty at all

I'm heading up to visit, but certainly won't turn down the chance to do some light wheeling while I'm there

NOBS!
01-19-2004, 02:34 AM

dang, I saw my name as the last that had replied in here, and didn't know I got an answer back :brownbag

I do have a couple other quesions tho - Do I need to get my money changed over, to buy anything there in Canada? If I do, where do I do that?? :shrug

Also, what, if any, paperwork do I need to bring with me, to cross the border. I carry my registration and insurance papers anyway, but would I need the title too??? doesn't make sense to me, if I do nedd my title, since I could hang out in canada for a month, and steal a bunch of vehicles, and sell them as my own

NOBS!
01-23-2004, 03:31 PM

Davids78Bronco
01-23-2004, 04:08 PM
Cool, works for me! Thanks

She almost cut vancouver out of the trip! I told her that was impossible, and that if anything, the drive along the coast would get cut out, since we could do that anytime... but head back up to vancouver?? R-i-i-ght!

Paul Gagnon
01-23-2004, 05:00 PM
You might want to bring your birth certificates too. They don't always ask but it can make it easier to cross.

Then there is the obvious things like no drugs or guns. ;)

Davids78Bronco
01-23-2004, 05:34 PM
no drugs??! Well, that's ok, I'm quite sure I can find what I need, when I get there :D

Good suggestion on the BC's too... certainly can't hurt. Do I need my vet papers too? I got my rabies shots a few months ago! :toothless

Paul,
where do you go wheeling in BC that has no mud?
last I knew you were down here on the wet coast.
someone that drives a near stock exploder (if that is still your ride) should not mouth up on what others do for fun.

If you had a vehicle capable of playing in the mud it might give you an insight into why it can be popular stress reliever.
any place I have played has a pit or 2 and a bunch of little trails to play in
great for rig testing
usually some strangers around to meet or help if one gets in trouble.

I know a bit about Paul gleaned from a few years of online observance
he is the moderator p4x4 chev section, and prior to him getting that unlikely title I have seen him on p4x4 for a few years
so far he hasnt deleted any of my posts over there
and probably a bit on bc4-bi-far before that

I still say his common bolt-on exploder is near stock, are those even 35s?
a 'soccer-mom SUV' owner is hardly the resume for one to flap
although maybe he is well versed with childrens tastes after giving them a ride to practice everyday.

I do not think I have been called 'sensitive' before.
do you think I can use that angle to pick up young chicks?

best to convert at an exchange or bank, not sure which side is best to convert at in your case I have always been on the other side of that game.

I have a set(4) of chains sized for 38.5/16/16.5 TSL, 2 Vbar style
if there is a snow area you want to show I will lend you the irons if they fit your ride
they should fit smaller diameter tires but the width would have to be there

That's exactly right... I just won't have enough time, but to show up, go somewhere, hang out, watch some trucks do their thing, head back to Mike's, then head out sometime mid-day the next day. Plus, I don't have much for tires :brownbag

What's with this sudden attack? Mud on a trail is a hell of a lot different than running back and forth in the same mud hole all day. I've done that before and it does not appeal to me.

As far as my truck, yes it is bone stock on 235/75R15 tires and I only drive it to the mall to get groceries.

I really couldn't care less what you or anyone else thinks of the fact that I wheel an Explorer and I'd be willing to bet that it's been wheeled harder than a lot of other so-called "more capable vehicles" that everyone tells me I should get instead. I've heard it all when it comes to wise cracks about Explorers so don't waste your breath. You drive your truck and I'll drive mine.

And since you asked, the tires in that picture are 36" Swampers.
