Not that the engine is gone I need to give the engine bay a good cleaning. I have used ZEP in the past and it has worked great but that can only be bought in mass quantities. What else has worked good for everyone? Remember I am cleaning the entier engine bay, crossmember, hood(underside), firewall, etc.

I'm looking at this kinda clean up soon too... so what's the best/cheap?

Home Depot sells some in a 5gallon bucket for 55$ but it is not that good. I use the real stuff that car lots do, get it through a chemical supply company. Also look for auto detail supply companies in the yellow pages. They sell that crap. Wheel acid works the best but is very toxic, and will eat your skin with exposure. The places I use for an explaple are, bucanneer auto aides, chem dry, and st pete detail supply.

STP makes some good stuff. Spray on, let sit for about 10 min and hose off. It doesn't leave a shine on plastic but sure cleans the gunk from metal.

Foamy Engine Bright works great... by Gunk... drive the rig for about 20 mins... pull into the car wash... blast away... wait 10 mins... insert quarters... and blast away the gunky stuff and presto!!!

you may want to put a baggy over the distributor... I do... those that don't are :wacko

I've always used cheap oven cleaner from the $ store. Last time I got it, I got like 3 cases and it was .50 cents a can. It can be a little hard on paint, but works really good on a warm engine. If you use this stuff, just test a small area first to see what it does. Keep in mind, I don't have a show truck or anything, but it knocks the oily greasy mess off my undercarriage pretty good. I think it works better then Gunk, and is cheaper to boot. Then again Gunk won't eat your paint off if your not careful...

Here's another vote for the Gunk products. they have always worked great for me, but I haven't had the chance to compare them to what everyone else is suggesting.

Zep has some new stuff at Hoome Depot called Fromula 505 buy it in a gallon spray on and watch it eat all the stuff off ..GOOD STUFF.

How do you use it? Spray on, let sit, and hose off? Warm or cold engine? I'd like to clean my engine compartment as well. Are there any areas it is best NOT to spray?

Yeah, don't spray your MAP sensor. Mine went bad shortly after having cleaned my engine bay. When I took the old one out, about 3 oz of water poured out of it! :banghead :doh: :banghead :duh :slap :twak


BTW, the MAP sensor is to the passenger side of the engine sort of mounted on the firewall.

easy off oven cleaner works good but also eats paint.
