View Full Version : San Juans fun in the snow
BoulderBronco 04-04-2003, 10:28 PM So I went up a local road to about 10500 feet today. I ended up going alone because I don't know anyone around here that would even make it never mind likes to wheel. The trail is meant for snow cats and snowmobiles during the winter but I went up anyway. The trail wasn't too bad because of it being packed down so well by snowmobilers and cats. I was probably driving on 4-5 feet but sitting right on top, and only sinking 8" at the most. Then I got to a creek crossing. Not a good idea to go across that even though it was only a couple inches deep there was too much snow. I went to back up and my right side sank 2 feet, S*#t! Once through the top layer I was in trouble. Tires were just spinning. It took me an hour of winching from trees to get the Bronco turned around and heading back down on the hard packed snow again. A snomobiler came by while I was stuck and looked at me like I was crazy. I said it was all part of the fun. I brought my new camera but wouldn't you know the batteries died so no pics. If it doesn't snow I am going to try to head up again in the next few days and I will take pics this time.
GearHead 04-04-2003, 10:56 PM please get pics. some of us dont get to do any wheeling in the snow.
Big Mike C. 04-04-2003, 11:04 PM Finally a story about wheeling... :thumbup
TTBlows 04-05-2003, 01:58 AM And you're giving me excuses about how you can't go to Moab....
We're leaving in the morning :finger:
BoulderBronco 04-05-2003, 03:30 AM Common Keith. Little love here. No excuses. I really can't. I haven't worked my framing job because of my dislocated thumb. I can however work my SkiSchool job on the weekends because I can hold a pole (not swing a hammer), need the money, and want to keep the job for next year. So I don't want to get fired for not showing up the last two days. My axle is now fixed and ready after I put the new hub in. Only thing left is the spindle bearing but that can wait (as long as I don't drive far or fast with the hubs locked). I'll get there just not this weekend. The weekend after this I have a trip to the front range. I'll try for the 26th and 27th.
BoulderBronco 04-06-2003, 07:54 PM It snowed about 10" today so I am not going to be going back up for a while. So no pics any time soon. Sorry.
TTBlows 04-06-2003, 11:40 PM Just giving you a hard time dude. If you gotta work you gotta work
We had fun, but it was cold over there this weekend, check out the storm over the La Sals here, probably the same one that gave you 10" of the fresh stuff

But we still had fun, this is an optional crack I found on Seven Mile Rim

Unfortunately the 26-27th won't work for me, I'll be putting up my shop. It's gonna take a ton of man-power and I was gonna ask you if you'd consider coming over and helping.........but I doubt you wanna do that, esp if the alternative for you was 'wheeling in Moab, plus your hand injury might not let you do much?
BoulderBronco 04-07-2003, 12:52 AM Looks cold. "Put up my shop." You mean you have to move a number of things into your new shop? If I don't go to Moab I would consider it. It's just the gas expense is painful. I'll let you know and keep me updated.
TTBlows 04-07-2003, 01:56 AM No, this is my new-to-me shop coming DOWN to be moved to my property:

Now it's stacked in my front yard and we gotta put it back up
We had 11 people to tear it down, it's gonna take at least that many to put it back up. There'll be lots of jobs available..... if you can't hold a wrench you can just hold up walls (literally) - boring but has to be done until at least three sides are up.
If you wanna come over I'll gladly pay your gas, but no pressure. It's not the most exciting proposal, I know. What IS exciting is that once it's done we can BUILD THINGS! I've got a compressor and plasma just sitting here
Crazed 04-07-2003, 02:19 AM I wish I was closer, I can hold a wall.
Miketnf150 04-07-2003, 12:48 PM Dang Keith that is one heck of a GEE-rawge!!!! I would like that for myself. I am with Crazed. If I lived closer I would be glad to lend a hand. And I can turn a wrench or swing a hammer.....

Yea man... I can swing a wrench and turn a hammer too! Luckily for you, I'm also too far to come and help! :P
Sweat deal man! How much did you save moving this garage vs. buying another kit?

Yeah, I'm psyched. The shop's a 25x32 (not huge but adequate), I paid $1500 for it, approx new price for something comparable woulda been $5-6k minimum, not necessarily incl garage doors. We called a LOT of steel building places, then I found this one used a mile from my house!
The money we saved has gone into shop equipment like the plasma and compressor, and I hope to have enough left over to buy a Miller 251.
We tore it down and trailered it over in a Saturday, but it's gonna take two days to put it back up me thinks.

:finger: :finger: Lucky Dawg!!! :finger: :finger:
Man why can't I find something like that. You are just like my dad. Got 60-70gal Ingersoll-Rand air compressor for nothing. His boss told him to get rid of it, it's no good. Dad took it home. Come to find out they didn't have the adequate power supplied to it so it wouldn't run right. Hey ran 220 or 240 to it, plugged it up and wallah!!!!!!! Sorry dawg.
BoulderBronco 04-07-2003, 03:39 PM Chip in gas money. Sure I'll come and help ya. My thumb should be fine for some swinging by then. I am actually going to try to get back to work framing tomorrow. Half day at least. It's painful but sometimes you gotta live with pain. Especially when you are as broke as I am.
