seriously, some places around here are free to get in and some places are $1 or $2.

My question to you guys is, have you ever just taken something? Be it a small little knob or something so minuscule.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever hid anything though. It is just that they usually ignore the miscellaneous little stuff in the bottom of the wheel barrow. It's usually stuff like nuts, bolts, screws, connectors, etc. I don't think I've ever actually pocketed anything though if that's what you are asking.

You have to pay just to walk into the wreckers? That is dumb!

Well besides what will fit in my pockets and isn't normally sold by the wreckers, I did take all the chrome moulding for my 70 firebird in the late eighties. It would have cost a few hundred that I didn't have, so I removed it all and walked over to the fence and threw it over. My vehicle was 2 stalls over. That was the only time though.

My junkyard treats me so good, I claim everything, if its something small they usually tell me "I'll pay you to take it, now get out of here." LOL I also find one item or a dozen items cost 20bucks, so I try to load up when I'm there. The only problem is they don't have the larger or newer selection that larger yards have.

i think the idea is to cut down on vandalism by keeping out the kids who just want someplace free to go to and bash up cars

Hell yeah I do. The way I see it, if they are going to cherge me 2 bucks to get in, I'm going to steal at least 2 bucks worth of stuff on my way out.

This was the best way to get lug bolts for my BMW when I still had it. They would just be lying in the dirt, so I had no problem dropping them in the toolbox. I never tried to hide them, but never tried to bring it to their attention, either.

I don't point out mistakes, either. I got a $300 Jeep windshield frame with good glass for $50 because the counter guy thought it was a rear hatchback lid. Who was I to try to correct them?

Another time I got a full set of front D44 reloads for $32 because, since the axles were connected together, they counted as one unit. If I had separated the stubs, it would have been $16 per item. I wasn't about to argue it. Junkyards make good money already.

Some of the yards I go to will charge folks they don't know to enter however (unless it's a new guy on the desk) the regulars don't get charged.

The yards I avoid whenever possible are the ones that don't let you in but make you ask for what you want and then they go and remove it from the vehicle. When that happens, wires get cut short, fittings get ignored, bolts are missing and usually the part is damaged in some way or another.

As far as pocketing parts, I've found if you tell the clerk what you have in the wheelbarrow (I always say "and fasteners") they don't change the price. Recently I picked up a few relays and when I told the attendant what I had she smiled and pointed to the door. Of course I've been going to this place for several years.

Ditto. Whatever fits in the toolbox. Yorks, logos, whatever.

They rape you with admission fees just to look around.

Not the one I have been going to for the last several years. I'd never even think of it just due to the owner. Reminds me of my dad. I've bought a few used cars from him for my kids and all have turned out well and he's backed them. I walk his lot every few weeks and on several times he just makes it a freebe.

I thought the entry fee had something to do with something like insurance or something. Who knows. It cost $1.00 to get into pull-a-part here and all prices are standard, no mater what vehicle it comes off the price is the same. Just got to watch em, some shit has a core charge on it thats usually a couple bucks..No big deal, but it adds up. Pull-a-part has cameras watching the yard.

I've been guilty of emblems, and a set of new GM plug wires on a wrecked blazer, after they raped me on a fuel line piece...but I try to be mostly honest.

Wow, I've never been charged to just enter a junk yard...most of the redneck dumps around here don't even haves fences around the whole thing. I've never stolen anything...but if they overlook something ad don't charge me, I don't open my mouth.

And carry those heavy parts for me. :toothless

I need a mustang ECM. I loaned out my spare and never got one back.

I wouldn't buy from a wrecker that would charge for the fasteners. It usually ends up at the smelter anyways so they aren't going to worry about it.

Since I'm young the wrecking yards always jack up the prices on me.

For instance I need a headlight switch harness that weekend, anyway they wanted $10 for it. I later found out the auto parts store sold them in the Help line for $8-9. Too bad I bought one used for more.

Oh well.

I need to go get some tow hooks next time I go.

I took some interior panels screws from a f150 before. That is the only thing I pocketed.

You could always get prices over the phone from several places before you go out.

Theres only 3 places you can go around here. They are not really that big. The rest are towing businesses.

The 3 places that are wrecking yards that sell parts are not like the official pull a part. Its just some towing/junk yard that sells parts on the side.

My favorite one is is northern Mi.. Dirt berm around it. The cows graze in the cars:rofl: The more you drink with the owner the cheaper it gets.

I went to the pickapart here one day for a windsheild wiper motor for my cavalier, but got a ticket for a broken taillight lens on the way there. I bought the tail light lens assembly and stole the wiper motor because I only took $40 with me. ($35 for the motor)

They made their money back off that poor little cavvy when I dumped it back there after I crashed it.

i've actully never been to a junkyard. buti have a good conscience, so i prolly wouldnt take something, even something small. unless i could justify it with ..."they charge to much." "they were dicks to me"

how much would they have wanted for the whole engine? you could have potentially made much more, and i hate to see LT5's parted :cry

Most of the time the guy doesn't charge me for stuff. I think I've only been charged one time, it was for a ranger interior light. My last haul was a 04 f-150 badge and a fog light wire for my G/F's explorer.

come home and found bolts in my toolbox, usually by accident but they dont care bout stuff that small anyway. When i picked up my non-a/c heater box for the bronco, i nabbed a seal for the rear p/u cab window, and they let me have it free. Then one time a few years back i found a junkyard having an axle sale....scooped up a couple random D44s for $25 each and made a quick profit :imp

I go to one junkyard here in SE WI. Old guy owns it. And me and one other guy are the only one who knows this yard is still around. He's got tons of shit. Alot of rare cars. No need to steal from this guy because he gives the parts away if you bring beer to drink with him and talk. I dont know what ill do if he die's but im tryin to get in good with the lonely old man if ya know what I mean.

I always ask how much but they usually just give it to me ( small stuff). We have no yards around here that charge to get in. The only problem we face around here is the supply of older trucks ( 77-79 f-150's 250,s and bronco's everything is newer 89-up) Yards around here think everything is gold.. a simple dana 44 front end from a early bronco would set you back at least $450.

there used to be a place here in Frankln that had nothing but 67-79 ford trucks mostly 4x4's too. but one day I drove past and he crushed them all. including a 79 snowfighter F250 and a 72 crew cab 4x4 F250. Lots of good parts went to hell.

I pitched an alternator over the back fence once, then rode my bicycle back after closing and 'retrieved' it. I was young and completely flat broke, so that makes it OK. Right?

Foster auto parts doet that shit too. My best friend used to be a parts driver for them and told me about the mexicans getting cheaper prices all the time. So one day I called and asked if the had an engine for my Dodge Avenger they guy said yes it's $1100. Then I had a spanish speaking buddy call the next day and ask about the same engine in spanish. He talked to the same guy as I did and was Quoted $625 just cause he was mexican.

I can recall exactly two things:

First, the hood ornament off a Toyota Cordoba. This was back when everyone wanted to be cool by wearing a Benz ornament as a necklace. I was being ironic even before it was cool.

The second thing was a porn mag I found under a front seat that was covered in blood. I wondered if one led to the other...

Ive been given more stuff by the local pick and pull than Ive paid for. Ive walked up with intake tubes, switches, door handles, relays, etc. and they just tell me to keep walking. I have pocketed misc nuts, bolts, and emblems but this is stuff they wouldnt charge me for anyhow.

IIRC, The $2 entry fee is to pay for the wrecking yard's insurance. You also have to sign the log when you enter the yard. I actually read the piece of paper once and it pretty much says if a car falls on you because of something you did WITHOUT asking for help, you cant sue.
