read somewhere that you can improve your accuracy with your bigger bores (like my .270) by shooting a .22 for target practice. given the cost of ammo being what it is, i decided to get one.

figured i would go out and get something cheap, i mean i was figuring spending something like $100-150, right?

well i could have bought a marlin or a remington for about $150, but they felt somewhat cheap and insubstantial. this ruger 10/22, however, felt much better in my hands, more substantial, and even though i thought i wanted a bolt action or lever, it was a semiauto. and then i saw one with a stainless barrel...$238 later it was in my grubby little paws.

course i had to buy a little 3-9x scope for it. about $60, nothing fancy since it's just a .22 for plinking. then a case, $19. then a bore snake to clean it. $15. 550 rounds of .22lr, $13. extra mags, another $45, speed loader, $25. after all the smoke cleared, i wound up dropping over $400 on everything, wtf?:cry

anyway, here are some pix. i know very little about 22's, or rugers for that matter, but i understand it is quite a popular gun. i'll try to sight it in tomorrow.

Ah, well thats prett nifty. All 10/22's use this type of magazine or just the ruger? Mine 22 is bolt action with the tube feed below the barrel, so not much up to date with the semi auto's except for the ones that have an actual magazine.

Ever notice how everything in the 10/22 is almost plastic now??

I did this to a 10/22...kind of near. It is all plastic of course. Cheap.

Oh goody, another gun thread. :chili:

This 10/22 is equipped with a heavy barrel, a Hogue stock and a Bushnell 3x9 scope...it is accurate as all get out:

Those are Butler Creek magazines...they function perfectly with my older 10/22, but they do occasionally hiccup with the not-yet-fully-broken-in "survival plinker". :shrug

mine is just like yours but with a synthetic stock. I it and shoot the crap out of it. cheap and fun. I had a similar experience as you. one day I got a hair up my ass to go buy a gun and thats what followed me home. hey at least I kept it in my budget. cant beat a nice cheap gun relatively speaking.

This gun has been in production, unchanged since the fifties.

here is mine. I bought it like you see it in 88 or 89. You wont be sorry you bought it. Just don't leave the clips loaded. I did that when I first bought it for close to a year and to this day one clip doesn't work as good as it should. But then again, the clip has never been cleaned and may be a little full of powder residue.

The rifle will be a lot more fun.

well i just got back from the range, i could only go to the indoor one today as the outdoor range was closed.

the ruger website was right, already the scope base is starting to loosen up after only about 100 rounds. is it ok to use loctite blue on the screw threads?

i still don't have it sighted in properly. it's close, but no cigar yet. it feels very nicely weighted, but i'm still used to the recoil of the .270, it is very odd shooting this with no kick whatsoever. pop pop pop. hahaha, it's fun.

I would say that I probablly wouldn't but that is just a knee jerk reaction without anything to back it up. Is it a ruger factory mounted scope?

jackhart

the scope base is ruger factory, yes. weaver type base.

true but then you have to shoot gold through the barrel. trust me I have one and shoot my 22 more. why? because ammo is next to nothing for it

I have the same with the synthetic stock as well. Got it from dicks, but they matched the $190ish Wal-mart price. Had plans for a thumbhole stock, and bull barrel, but then job got in the way of the time to shoot, then the BKO got in the way of money to upgrade the rig. It is still alot of fun to go shooting the cheap ammo all day for under $20. Just make sure you clean the it really well after shooting the cheap stuff.

Nice gun. I know wood is a natural thing, but all the speckles on the stock would kinda bug me.
About the scope mount, I had a scope on mine and it came loose after firing a few boxes through it. Then I put in on with an impact and its never given me problems for years.

jackhart
03-28-2008, 11:37 AM
mike, with loctite, or no? and now i'm going to have to take the scope and the rings off in order to get to the set screws for the weaver base, which means i'll have to remount and try to sight in from scratch. oh well.

the speckles don't bother me at all. in fact, i hate wood stocks where you can't see any grain at all.

most sporting goods store will bore sight it for ya for around 5 bucks. You could also pick up a boresight laser for around 40 or 50 bucks. Just a thought. Bore sighting isn't perfect but it is going to get you close.

Nickblaze466
03-28-2008, 02:03 PM
if i bought a gun and they charged me to boresight the scope i also bought for them i'd go somewhere else. thats crazy. i know of one store that is built on top of some inactive storm sewers, and they got permission from the county to use it as an indoor, underground rifle range. you buy a gun and a scope, theyll boresite it and then put a couple shells through it for you and get it dialed in at 50 yards. no charge.

some scope rings just can't hang on, but i've never heard of a problem with them on a .22. what kind were they?

i usually use leupold bases and rings as i generally only use vx3 glass. tried that on my .460 and ripped the son of a bitch in half. didn't scratch the finish on my rifle though, thank god. fawkers.

If I remember right my 10/22 had an adjustable rear sight.

Getting it sighted for 5 bucks is pretty good but you can do it yourself. I learned how in the USMC.

I miss mine but it is gone to me. All I have to plink with is a .69 caliber 1763 Charleville.

matt4068
03-29-2008, 01:50 AM
bass pro shop always bore sighted for me for free. ofcourse i bought both scopes and rifles from theyre. but it only costs them time to do it and they get paed anyway, if they charge you to do it then pooo with them.... i think im gonna go ahead and put some nail polish (most likely) or loctite(less likely) on my mounts now.....

both my .17 and .22 are weaver style.... dont care for them much. reaaaalllly like the dual dovetail mounts though solid like rock.

i bought the gun at walmart. they make a special version with the stainless 22" barrel that is supposedly only sold at walmart. who knew? anyway, walmart does not boresight.

i forgot i actually had a laser boresighter from when i got my .270. i'll take it to the range tomorrow and see how it goes. i did loctite the threads on the weaver base. hopefully that solves the problem.

anyone of you guys replace the stock trigger assembly?

04-02-2008, 08:55 PM
Mines factory but I have a friend with two hot rodded 10-22, both with custom triggers, and they are sweet. I think they were $200 each or something like that. Well worth it if a nice trigger is important to you. For me, on a cheap gun that I don't do any competition shooting or hunting with I could care less.
