well during the summer the place I work for starts to die down, and I was thinking of getting a part time job as a flagger here in washington. $40 for the flagger course that gets reimbursed to me after 100 hours of work, starting pay is $11 an hour. The jobs is locally based and almost all within a 20 mile radius.

So does anyone here work as a flagger? How hard is the work? how dangerous? I would've went with a regular job but my right knee which is bad because of an accident prevents me from lifting and such, but I was told a flagger is basically standing around, putting up cones and signs and crap.

One of my best friends used to work as a flagger for the town we lived in. I can't count how many times he would come home and tell me how he almost got hit by a car. But he never actually got whacked.

From what I understand (state dependent?) is that flaggers have a pretty good amount of authority. The flaggers would call in plate numbers of people who disobeyed the flagger....I guess Cops take that pretty seriously.

He always had an interesting story to tell.

My guess is that if your knee prevents regular work, that it also will not allow you to stand around for 8-10 hours a day. I have talked to a few people that flag and they say that it ain't as easy as it looks. I know I wouldn't want to stand in one place all day.

its my knee that prevents me from going to work at places like target and walmart and warehouses that do constant lifting and such with shipping boxes and other crap. I dont have a problem standing for 8 hours with comfortable shoes and my knee brace if need be.

Hmmm, well then try it out. The only thing then would be if THEY are willing to hire you with a physical disability. They may just not want to tangle with the possible liability.

They flaggers for the local paving company here make over $20 bucks an hour. One lady I talked to has worked for them forever and makes just over $30. She is in her 50's and is in GREAT shape. Pretty good lookin, too. Likes to wear a cowboy hat and a tank top in the summer. Mmmmmm. But yeah, you gotta be able to just stand all damn day.

Damn I was getting ripped off, Back in the mid 90's I was doing that for $10 bucks an hour.

Oh and two storys for you that I heard from that job:

1. There was once this flagman that was flagging for a fill site in which a neighborhood road traveled through. Anyways he was flagging for Scrapers that were crossing the road. Throughout the day the grade got higher and higher and the operators got gutsyier and gutsier, and started jumpping the scrapers across the road (The avrage scraper can acheive speeds of 70MPH +). Towards the end of the day one pretenous lady thought she was too important to stop for the flagman. She ran the stop. Just as she got to the crossroad for the scrapers one of them jumpped over her hood. She stopped the car had a panic attack right there and then went into shock. She ended up getting carted off via an ambulance. Oh and no she couldn't do shit about the scare. She ran a stop sign.

2. There was one flagman that everyone knew was a little nuts (It's construction they are all nuts) Anyways, he took his job VERY seriously. Well there was one guy that got stopped by the flagman on his morning commute that would constantly run the stop. Until the flagman jumpped on the hood of his car and beat in the windshield. Yea a bit nuts. But because the guy kept running the stop the charges were dropped by the police.

i used to do a little flagging at work, truck drivers would pull into our lot and the only way out was back, onto a major highway

we had a few too many close calls with pissed off and distracted drivers,

we had a few too many close calls with pissed off and distracted drivers,

There's an easy fix for those problems...

28" road cones filled with concrete.

55er barrels filled with sand.

I started doing that on the few times I got to get out of playing asphalt plant mechanic and go out on the road crew as a backup guy.

Drivers get ALL bent out of shape when the cops tell them they're not supposed to hit the orange cones, and they're listed as "At Fault" on the accident ticket.

I haven't flagged in years but I can tell you its not easy money. Standing for 8-10 hours isn't easy. I would rather bust ass all day than stand in one place. You should think about taking more courses and become a traffic control supervisor. More money and all the flagging you'll do is during potty breaks for the regular flaggers. I'm pretty sure Washington state still requires one on each work site in addition to the flaggers.

I couldn't do it. It seems like it would be one of those jobs where you look at the clock 10 times an hour just to see how much longer you have to go.
I did some flagging when I was working for the power company but it was never for more then 15 or 20 minutes at a time. Uaually just long enoufgh to park a truck in the road and close some fuses or something.
On the few occasions when we couldn't get out of the road and I was there for hours it sucked majorly.

 so some of those cones out there may be filled with concrete, i did not know that. so the people get a f'kd up car and a ticket:histerica

they take that kind of stuff seriously, i guess becuase of how many workers are killed each year.

i saw one guy the other day who was asking to get hit, he was laying down on the sidewalk reaching and looking into a storm drain with his head in the gutter:shocked, i couldn't believe he didn't have any cones or anythinig setup, just his hard hat and reflective vest

Thats about my experience with it. Line extensions, pole transfers in bad spots. 'Cept for about a month in Brookings when they were transferring the utilities underground on the main drag when you first pull in. I had to "oversee" some shit the county was doin. They requested a rep. from Verizon and us. I was always available bein on limited duty so I got drafted. Spent a couple of weeks with my thumb in my butt. Got to talk to the hottie flaggers tho. In the summer time too.

We were doin some bridge repair work and i got assigned flagger, thats scary when a car looks like its comin straight at you, and the only place to go is over the rail, 50 feet down. But that vest they had for me was sexy as hell, size medium, looked like floss

Yep, that's the beauty... you get the assholes that decide to take out one or two of them just to be funny, and what do they end up with? Well, the one guy who did it had his core support crushed and it ripped the exhaust manifold right off the front of the honda engine. He probably caused himself a good 2,000 dollars worth of damage because he was a ****ing asshole.

I pee'd I laughed so hard.

I used to work for a sewer repair co. out of Ottawa ILL. it was atraveling job and they paid prevailing wages. We were working in the burbs of Philly PA. i held a stop sign and got paid $29.00/hr plus $30.00 per diam(a nite) to sleep in a flea bag motel room. a mouthy 19 yr old co-worker & my bad temper lost me that gig. good money for the 2 months that i did that job.

I couldn't do it. I would rather be hungry then stand for 8 hours straight. I would rather work my ass off then not have anything to do. Makes the day go by so much faster when you have something to do.

sorry, but i gotta call BS on this one. havent driven one, but can pretty damm well expect that they dont go much over 35, as they are setup like a low geared high horse tractor. made to pull and push, not fly.

I don't know about 70 but I see them going along at least 45, maybe even 50 mph.
