Does the catalytic converter help with gas mileage? I know it helps with emissions but am wondering if it has anything to do with gas mileage.

It makes a difference if the one you have is clogged or leaking.

yes, if it's plugged it will lower power and MPG.
Having no converter is like buying a super flow muffler and 3" converter. However I doubt San Diego will let you remove it. :shrug

No, and it actually does not even help with emissions. They are lot's of studies out that show CC are of no use after the initial burn in period, and rob hp and mileage.

OK. I am just wondering since the last time I took my car (Fisher Price Mobile) to get it smogged, it barely passed. I mean barely. I matched numbers this time. Kind of like hitting the lottery. Anyways, I have noticed that the MPG has gone down also. The smog guy said that it looks like the converter is going out. I am thinking that if it was going out, that it could be the reason why my mileage sucks so bad now. I plan on selling the plastic car to get a truck (not a bronco) but wondering if I should fork out the money for a new converter before selling it. It is a bolt on converter so that is not a problem since I know I can do that. It cost about $160. Of course if I change it out, I might keep the car since I do drive a long way to work.
